For Sale: Ridiculous Political Domain Names

Are you a mythical creature who leans conservative? Do you anticipate a big story about Obama collaborating with a ’90s rapper? The bad news is someone might have already nabbed your perfect political domain name. The good news is that it might also be among the thousands up for auction this cycle.

Internet registrar Go Daddy recently released stats about how eager people have been to buy domain names. Since June, more than 1,600 containing some form of “Mitt Romney” or “Paul Ryan” have been registered. Combinations of Obama/Biden are trailing, but there are still some gems out there. Here’s a taste of what’s currently up for auction, suiting every imaginable taste:

For the disgrace-oriented entrepreneur:

romneyscandals.com ($999)

obamasfauxpas.com ($12)

For underrepresented voting blocs:

djsforobama.com ($12)

unicornsforromney.com ($800)

For people dedicated to very unlikely couplings:

romney4cannabis.com ($100)

cooliobama.co ($12)

For entrepreneurs setting their hopes on typos:

mitchromney.com ($9000)

forbidenlove.com ($800)

For entrepreneurs with wacky merchandising ideas:

obamalightbeer.com ($12)

romneypaul2012tees.com ($50,000)

For people who probably need to update their slang:

brobama.com ($50,000)

romneyrocks.com ($600)

For the person partial to edible kernels and who loves or hates Obama:

nutsforobama.com ($9)

obamaisnuts.com ($200)

For people who believe long domain names aren’t off-putting:

whyevangelicalsshouldvoteformittromney.com ($400)

obamacalifragilisticexpialidocious.com ($50)

For Minnesotans seeking a memento of what can never be:

romneyandpawlenty2012.com ($1,000)

What a marvelous TIME article. Yet another in the long series of "do anything but talk about the economy or hold Obama accountable."

Yeah, what partisan hacks since they do anything but harp on Obama 24/7.  That would be the very definition of "fair and balanced" right?

I blame Bush-Cheney (and the people who voted for them, like you, Rusty) for the economy.

Why do you hate America, Rusty?

I blame them all for the mess we are in.  I also think that is how those who will take the time and trouble to go out and vote in November as a majority of all voters will also think.

Barry IS going down.

I own barackabilly.com but don't know what I plan to do with it.

You could start by posting a list of all of Obama's favorite Camp;W songs.  It shouldn't take very long.

For Minnesotans seeking a memento of what can never be: romneyandpawlenty2012.com ($1,000)

That's about 999 more dollars than the number of Minnesotans who desired that ticket.

Right??  Who valuated these things anyway?

It's a surprisingly lucrative business to gobble up silly domain names and then sell them off to desperate bidders.  You are right though, I can't imagine why anyone would pay that for an effectively useless domain name.

Romneyflipflops is taken for .com but all others open. Maybe we commentariat can buy up the good names and flip 'em like homes for a quick profit (I doubt the High Sheriffs would allow the swamp reporters in on the action).

Thanks, Katy. I just went to domain.com and searched some names. Unicornsforromney is indeed taken but romneymagicunderwear is available! The list of alternates for THAT is highly entertaining. Rightwingnutjobs is taken for .com, .net, and .org, but .co and .biz are still open.
