Decrying Campaign ‘Hatred,’ Romney Tries to Redefine Obama — and Change the Subject

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign event at the Ross County Court House in Chillicothe, Ohio on August 14, 2012.

Mitt Romney should have been feeling great on Tuesday night. Crisscrossing five swing states over four days, he was greeted by some of the best crowds of the campaign. The politics of his Vice Presidential pick are open for debate, but Paul Ryan’s debut was a success. Romney was clicking on the stump. His final venue on the tour, a charming, flag-bedecked boulevard in Chillicothe, Ohio, was a pitch-perfect piece of pageantry. Gazing out at a sea of supporters, Romney had reason to believe he was turning this thing around.

So it was surprising to see Romney use what might have been an upbeat, triumphant moment to strike out at Barack Obama. Romney called his opponent’s campaign a “disgrace” to his office. “Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago,” he said. On Wednesday morning, he repeated the charge, telling CBS News that Obama’s re-election bid was “all about division and attack and hatred…it’s designed to bring a sense of enmity and jealousy and anger.”

(MORE: Bus Tour Re-Energizes Romney–And His Case Against Obama)

Romney was reacting to Vice President Joe Biden’s comment on Tuesday that Republicans, by pushing to “unchain” Wall Street, would “put y’all back in chains.” Biden made the remark Tuesday to a racially mixed audience in Danville, Va., and Republicans have suggested Biden’s remark was an allusion to slavery. Biden said he misspoke, intending to use the word “unshackled,” a term Republicans have adopted in the past in reference to regulatory burdens. The Obama campaign publicly defended Biden and called Romney’s statements “unhinged” — a word that the Romney campaign once used to refer to Newt Gingrich.

“The truth is that during the course of these campaigns, folks like to get obsessed with how something was phrased even if everybody personally understands that’s not how it was meant,” Obama told People magazine. “That’s sort of the nature of modern campaigns and modern coverage of campaigns. But I tell you, when I’m traveling around Iowa, that’s not what’s on people’s minds.”

If Obama was on the defensive about Biden’s remarks, Romney’s campaign was livid and went into attack mode. “Whether it’s accusing Mitt Romney of being a felon, having been responsible for a woman’s tragic death or now wanting to put people in chains, there’s no question that because of the President’s failed record he’s been reduced to a desperate campaign based on division and demonization,” Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul said in a statement.

(MORE: A Big Ideas Campaign, With Few Specifics On a Key Issue)

But there were tactics behind the Romney camp’s outrage. Obama himself didn’t actually say anything of the things Saul referenced. His deputy campaign manager made the felon remark (which she denied was an accusation), and an allied super PAC appeared to link Bain Capital to a woman succumbing to cancer. It was Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid who used cynical political jujitsu to sustain the discussion of Romney’s tax returns. Obama did get in on the action Tuesday by dropping a tired reference to Romney’s dog.

One Romney aide suggested the President was at fault for sanctioning personal attacks on the presumptive Republican nominee. “This is a pattern. It’s been building for weeks now,” says the aide. The candidate agrees. “His campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the Presidency,” said Romney.

But really this is political business as much as it is personal outrage. Obama has benefited from the favorable impression voters have of him as a person; his likability has lifted him above Romney in most recent polls despite frustration with his handling of the economy. The Romney campaign is making a concerted effort to wrap Obama in his campaign’s rhetoric, because forcing Obama to take responsibility for his campaign’s accusations is a way to shatter the positive image the president has crafted and which still sustains him. It also sharpens the contrast Romney wants to draw between Obama as a ruthless political tactician and himself as a patriotic Mr. Fix-it.

(PHOTOS: Inside Barack Obama’s World)

Criticizing Obama is also a way to change the subject. Now that Paul Ryan has been chosen as Romney’s running mate, Democrats are ramping up their Medicare attacks. “They want to turn Medicare into a voucher program,” Obama said Wednesday in Dubuque. “That means seniors would not have the guarantee of Medicare.” Denouncing Obama deflects that discussion, which has already been problematic for Romney. The candidate repeatedly dodged reporters’ questions Monday about the substantive differences between his Medicare plan and Ryan’s.

Romney is pledging a debate of ideas, and characterizing his opponent as underhanded and calculating may help Romney claim the mantle of a high-minded candidate. But the negative attacks against Obama mean that the promise of a new and nobler style of campaign ended in a matter of hours. From here on in, expect the outrage to crank into overdrive.

Forgive me, but I’m not prepared to join this walk down Great Umbrage Street just yet. Yes, it’s ugly out there. But is this worse than four years ago, when Obama was accused by the GOP vice presidential nominee of “palling around with terrorists”? Or eight years ago, when Democratic nominee John Kerry was accused of falsifying his Vietnam War record?

What’s different this time is that the Democrats are employing the same harsh tactics that have been used against them for so long, with so much success. They have ceased their traditional response of assuming the fetal position when attacked, and Obama’s campaign is giving as good as it gets — and then some.

Comic relief is nice but America has really big problems. It shows when you post Stuart satire that you are just laughing at all our problems. But, that is the usual liberal approach, it is one big joke.

There really is only one contention in this election.  Jobs, economy, deficit, immigration, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, education and so on are all challenges for both sides and the only question is will they be resolved to satisfy "the money" or to satisfy "the people"?   "The money" or "the people" is the one real issue.  The Republican / Tea Party is owned and controlled by "the money" and over the last twelve years it has been obvious they totally concentrate on serving only "the money", without conscience for "the people".  The Democrats are really dependent on "the people" for their support and power and are committed to working to serve those interests.  In everything, without exception, with the deceptive rhetoric put aside this one issue is at the base of all their actions and is evident in everything they do.  The ironic thing is that both need to sway “the people”, the voters, in order to have their way.  The Republicans act cocky confident that with the money, power and influence of "the money" they will be able to con "the people" and manipulate public opinion, to literally use the voters as "pawns".  The Democrats are fighting to keep up with the mega-millions being spent and to get their messages clearly across to "the people".  In the end it is up to "the people"; will they vote for their own interests or be duped into voting for "the moneys" interests?

Whether the politicians will serve the interests of "the money" or of "the people" is the only real question to be resolved and a real example of the subterfuge being aggressively used to disguise that issue is seen in the excitement being purposely created over government spending and the deficit.  The Republicans are faulting and blocking all efforts to effectively spend, even when to create jobs, rejecting the fact that responsible spending can actually stimulate the recovery, with their instead favoring further reducing taxes for "the money" (even after Bush-Cheney proved beyond any doubt that the "trickle down" theory is a total fraud only making the wealthy wealthier and soliciting political support).  Now controlling government spending and reducing the deficit are responsible and important goals but they are neither what caused our problems nor should they be the main priority only to satisfy "the money".

Saying "big government' is at fault and it is the cause of our problems is actually deceptive and an intentional distraction.  Reducing government spending and the deficit are important goals but that isn't what caused our problems and focusing only there won't solve our problems.  What really caused our problems is permissive, co-responsible politicians catering to "the money", their strong supporters, who exploited their advantages and who with run-away greed, gross dishonesty and self-indulgence caused repeated crises in savings and loans, banks, dot.coms, manufacturing, the mortgage, investment and financial industries, as well as corporate corruption (like Enron) and then with industrywide failures, always with "the few" taking enormous gains and leaving the costs and lost jobs to the majority.  Any objective viewing of reality totally substantiates that and recognizes it as what brought us to crisis point.  The simple truth is that Romney, Ryan, Boehner and the rest of the Republican / Tea Party are owned and controlled by "the money" and their focus is totally on serving the 1%, which just can't ever help the 99%.

But we here in the press corps know that Crazy Joe is lying. He said what he said to rile up the black audience. We can't say that, however, because it might damage our favored candidate who we installed in the White House in 2008.

There is a new advert out in which some Special Ops folks accuse Obama of taking credit for killing Bin Laden, they also accuse him of leaking top security information.

And per the "Citizens United", this is a PAC, not a Super Pac, so the names of the donors cannot be released in anyway.

Since Romney and Ryan have little or no policy experience, this is an effort to SWIFT-BOAT the President.

The interesting thing is if the operation to kill Bin Laden was not successful, Obama would have been blamed. Yet, he killed Bin Laden and they are accusing him of taking credit??? HE SHOULD TAKE CREDIT AND CAN!!

I just want a debate on the Medicare and Medicaid issue. And even though I am a Conservative, Romney should not be elected President if he refuses to release more tax returns. He lied to us in MA about his residence in his taxes, after assuring us OVER AND OVER that he filed as a resident. Turns out he did not have MA as his permanent resident, but instead had Utah.

His reason for lying? He did not know he paid taxes in Utah as a resident, and not MA, his wife paid the taxes. However, the Assessor showed two letters that were sent to Romney that he responded to, himself.

Romney would be MANY MANY TIMES worse than Obama could ever be!  As Governor he was ranked one of the worst.

"In fact, the top finance advisor to two prior Republican governors said Romney was distracted by political ambition in the final years of his term.

"The real tragedy of Romney's governorship is that he did not utilize

his full capacity as governor," said Stephen P. Crosby, who served in

the Cabinet of two previous Republican governors and advised the

transition of Romney's Democratic successor. Crosby, dean of the

University of Massachusetts' McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, praised Romney's leadership and business acumen but said he never delivered on promises to lure jobs to the state."

Benevolent Lawyer

And Romney LIED TO US ABOUT HIS RESIDENCE IN OUR STATE-- so he is untrustworthy and a LIAR. So, Romney would not just leak information, he would probably sell our National secrets to China if the PRICE is right. He was a sleaze bag then, and is one now.

And he has ZERO foreign policy experience! He lied about his Taxes and the residence he declared in it. Told us to trust him because MA was reflected in his taxes. Turns out that he lied!! It was not MA but UTAH!

He also ruined our state, economically by raising corporate taxes like a LOON. Since he could NOT handle MA, then he certainly cannot rule our country. Romney was a horrible governor, and the WORST candidate the Republican party could have chosen as its flag bearer.

This is from the Boston Globe in 2002:

"In addition to the revision of his statement on his

Massachusetts tax status, Romney originally said he had not seen the

property tax bills from Summit County, Utah, that showed he was

receiving a deep discount because his primary residence was in Utah. He said the bills were addressed to his wife, Ann, and that she dealt with them.

However, records show the bills were sent to him and that he paid

the taxes in 1999 and 2000, while his wife paid the 2001 real estate

tax.

Romney also said he did not learn he received the tax break given to those with primary residences in Utah until he read about it in the Globe on Wednesday.

However, Summit County, Utah, tax assessors sent Romney a “notice of property valuation and tax changes” for each of the three years, spelling out that he was getting a primary resident tax cut

on his  3.8 dollar million home."

You can read more of this in the Boston Globe by clicking HERE.

Meanwhile, in several interviews, he said he was an MA resident and later admitted that he had changed his residence by modifying his taxes.

The entire time he was telling us that MA was his main residence HE ADMITTED THAT HE WAS LYING. It had not been modified in his tax returns at that time!!

Barry Sotereo? You mean the one on the pamphlet who advertised in 1990 about his new book, "Journeys in Black and White" which later became "Dreams From My FAther?" That Barry?  Who reinvented himself in BArack Obama, spend about 18 months in Illinois Senate and magically became President? Everybody get smarter. The Dems and Repubs put up "their man" and he is just a puppet for the party. The real POWEr is in the people. You and me. We can change this whole poltiically corrupt system. Take all the money away from elections. Make getting elected FREE. You just sign up. Put your name on the ballot. People vote. End of story. No money involved. This kind of campaign/election system just puts the guy who spent the most money in the WHITE HOUSE. It just elected rich people. I think people who make 10.0000 to 24,0000 annually are the only people who should be the only ones allowed to run. Ditch diggers, teachers, custodians, McDonald employees. How about that?

Elizabeth,

As paul Harvey used to say "and here's the rest of the story is."

The movie "2016 Obama's America".

Love him or hate him, you don’t know him.

http://2016themovie.com/about/

Don't miss this movie. Every American should see this movie before the November election.

About 2016: Obama’s America

2016 Obama's America takes audiences on a gripping visual journey into the heart of the world’s most powerful office to reveal the struggle of whether one man's past will redefine America over the next four years. The film examines the question, "If Obama wins a second term, where will we be in 2016?"

Across the globe and in America, people in 2008 hungered for a leader who would unite and lift us from economic turmoil and war. True to America’s ideals, they invested their hope in a new kind of president, Barack Obama. What they didn't know is that Obama is a man with a past, and in powerful ways that past defines him--who he is, how he thinks, and where he intends to take America and the world.

Immersed in exotic locales across four continents, best selling author Dinesh D’Souza races against time to find answers to Obama’s past and reveal where America will be in 2016. During this journey he discovers how Hope and Change became radically misunderstood, and identifies new flashpoints for hot wars in mankind’s greatest struggle. The journey moves quickly over the arc of the old colonial empires, into America’s empire of liberty, and we see the unfolding realignment of nations and the shape of the global future.

Emotionally engaging, 2016 Obama’s America will make you confounded and cheer as you discover the mysteries and answers to your greatest aspirations and worst fears.
