28 Members of Congress Join Fast to Protest Budget Cuts

Progressive evangelical leader Jim Wallis is now eleven days into a fast to bring attention to budget cuts in programs that target low-income Americans. He and former Democratic Congressman Tony Hall have been joined by a variety of religious leaders, as well as the leaders of MoveOn.org and SEIU. And now 28 members of Congress (all Democrats) have pledged to support the cause by fasting as well. That’s a lot of hungry people–but, say the fast organizers, nothing compared to the numbers who would go hungry if proposed cuts to anti-poverty and hunger programs pass.

A list of fasting members of Congress is after the jump.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

It’s something a bit more symbolic than what the GOP is considering.
    .
They’re all chipping in to buy Boehner another hour at the tanning salon…

  • deconstructiva

Michele Bachmann is NOT on the list??? I thought she was into the Christian stuff, counseling, foster kids, etc. Or just pretending to help, I guess. Amy, how about a future post highlighting the, uh, differences between her professed Christian practices and the real ones? Go for it, carpe diem.

  • 53_3

She’s waiting for the vuvezuelas to sound the Apocolypse…

  • michaelfury

“Our permanent war economy has not been challenged by Obama and the Democratic Party. They support its destructive fury because it funds them. They validate its evil assumptions because to take them on is political suicide. They repeat the narrative of fear because it keeps us dormant. They do this because they have become weaker than the corporate forces that profit from permanent war.”

Maybe if we all buy her one she’ll reply to us. But has anyone ever tried to use vuvzuelas like this… (nsfw?)
    .

    .
…but speaking of apocalypses, CNBC is seriously discussing the one for next year and how to profit from it (thoughts, Amy?). Really –

In a pure capitalist sense I’d love to be the caterer for the group’s press conference after fast is over. Doesn’t matter what the menu / cuisine is, just pile up the food and let ‘em have at it.

  • sacredh

While I have respect for people who are willing to fast to support something as importatnt as this, let’s not forget that will still have money coming in to buy food if they want to. People without money aren’t really given that choice.

  • 53_3

I think if we all just bought one and blew in her ear, she’d follow.
    .
Never mind. I’m a guy. I think like that, sometimes*…
    .
*unlike most women, she truly is dumb enough! At least this way, I can let the ol’ male ego out for a trot without getting it shot at. It’s a lot of work to pound the dents out, spackle it, and repaint it, so I try to be careful and try to avoid just letting it roam free.

Monty Python has been so relevant these last few years. I wonder why…

  • hippooath

    I agree

  • Ivy_B

sacred, I agree. I think that people who have lived on a food stamp allocation for a month probably learned a lot more. They, too, still have the food they want at the end, but it is a real learning experience while they are doing it.

  • americanwithabrain

Good. Let the idiots starve to death. If they keep taxing me to fund their pork I’ll starve, so better them than me. And when they go, I won’t be sorry. It will just be mother nature thinning the gene pool.

  • 53_3

    I agree.

  • 53_3

Ahhh! The cat is out of the bag!
    .
“…It will just be mother nature thinning the gene pool.”
    .
    You are a social Darwinist!

  • jsfox

Taxing you? What taxes? Please do tell how bad your taxes are? Federal Taxes have not been this low since the 20s. And if you seriously want a budget that comes even close to balance you better except the fact that they will need to go up.

There is no way to get close balancing the budget on cuts alone and to think otherwise it to either be fiscally naive or a fiscal fraud.

He’s a social darwinist which by extension makes him a… SOCIALIST, RIGHT!?

“Monty Python has been so relevant these last few years. I wonder why…”

53_3, when I look at the Tea Party I can’t decide if they’re trying to be Monty Python or the Keystone Cops (without the bargaining rights).

Our permanent war economy has not been challenged by Obama and the Democratic Party.
    .
Seriously? On a post about Democrats fasting to protest the war on the economy and the poor being waging by Republicans? Liberal ODS strikes again. Hedges, I mean, we already knew you were crazy.

“Shut It Down” = “Let Them Starve”??

    American,
    .
I can’t tell you how it breaks my heart when I hear about the stories of overtaxed people who are so over taxed that they see no point in working.
    .
I can not tell you that it breaks my heart because I will not lie to you.
    .
If you are going to seriously tell me that you can’t pay your bills because you are paying so much in taxes, you can be one of three things:
    .
A liar an irresponsible spendthrift, or somebody who owns their own business who desperately needs an accountant.
    .
( If a business pays taxes on it’s gross revenues instead of it’s revenues after expenses, it is possible that you are being driven under by paying ten to twenty times as much tax as you are due).
    .
Also, you could have an accountant who is just robbing you blind and telling you that it is all taxes and just a coincidence that he owns six Mercedes, a Porsche and two vacation homes with you as one of his only clients.

I rarely do this, but, this is the type of Christianity I was raised to believe in!
    .
    Care for the less fortunate.
    .
It may be just symbolic, but, at least it is not selfishness and greed wrapped up in the bible and the American flag.

I wish all Christians were like this.
    .
If they were, with most atheists/agnostics and Jews being liberal, we would have absolutely no Republican Party at all.

  • nflfoghorn

    “Care for the less fortunate”
    .
…and not gloat about it for personal gain.
    .
    Micah 6:8–
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what more does he require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
    .
Sorry to get all churchy on you, PS, but I’m just sayin’.

If only they would also remember Luke 3:11

“Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

Innumeracy seems to run rampant through the Republican party. Tax rates are lower than ever before. Obama gave people a tax cut in the stimulus on top of the Bush tax cuts that have been renewed.

But never try to confuse a Republican with the facts. And if you add numbers, well, then the brain starts to overheat.

Shep, agree that this MF is wildly OT, but just to clarify:
    .
“Hedges, I mean, we already knew you were crazy.”
    .
You’re saying that if someone finds merit in Chris Hedges’ writing, they’re crazy?

  • apr2563

Shepherd: I must be crazy. I think Hedges is a great writer and political thinker. Read “American Fascists”.

  • apr2563

Ghandi often used fasting to make a statement. Remember the Raj fell.
