Tim Pawlenty, Seeking Definition, Purchases An Online Video Pose

“The first duty in life is to assume a pose,” wrote Oscar Wilde. “What the second duty is, no one has yet discovered.” A cynic might say the same of Presidential politics. Barack Obama posed as the bearer of hope. George W. Bush posed as a compassionate conservative. John McCain posed as a maverick.

Perhaps more than most, Tim Pawlenty, has been seeking a pose of his own. As it stands, most Americans don’t know who he is or, yet, care. He tends to come across as genial, smart and bland. His recently-published pre-presidential memoir suggests his campaign is preparing to pose him as the Midwestern working man, who came up from the meat yards of Minneasota understanding the needs of guys who wear khaki Carhartt jackets. His recent online efforts suggest a different pose, as the hero of a Hollywood blockbuster, a sort of Bruce Willis for the GOP. Just watch the video Pawlenty released today. (The not-yet-a-campaign has blocked embedding.)

This is a pose, it should be said, that Pawlenty has literally bought off the shelf. The video, like the last “trailer” the Pawlenty almost-campaign released, is the work of Lucas Baiano, a talented young video director whom I wrote about last summer. Baiano did the Republican Governors Association spots that lambasted Barack Obama with “Remember November” videos, a theme that seemed to echo the popular myth of Guy Fawkes.

Baiano did the same for Chris Christie, also working on the RGA account.

The question is whether Pawlenty is overcompensating by using Baiano’s emotive, hyper-Hollywood style. Baiano’s videos are captivating, but their stylistic qualities tend to overwhelm  the substance. In today’s video, shots of hockey coach Pawlenty are cut together with Marine heel snaps, fighter jets and roars from the sort of crowd that Pawlenty has yet to draw. This is a pose that will get Pawlenty more notice online. (I doubt I would have written this blog post if the video was boring.) Whether Pawlenty can sustain the pose without the aide of Final Cut Pro and a twenty-something auteur is another question altogether.

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

Tim Pawlenty says he’s in; Mitch Daniels suggests he’s not
    By Jennifer Rubin

Tim Pawlenty is announcing today the formation of his exploratory committee. That is no surprise. What is eyebrow-raising is the degree to which he has shown the ability to run a disciplined campaign and raise his visibility without incurring any serious knocks. He has diligently been where he has to be — CPAC, Iowa, New Hampshire — to introduce himself. He’s made no gaffes and has shown himself to be unusually adept on foreign policy for a governor. And he hasn’t alienated any key group in the GOP (e.g. hawks, social conservatives). The doubts about Pawlenty’s charisma will need to be answered, but he has left audiences generally impressed, be it the national media at the National Press Club or the Republican Christian conservatives in Iowa. His speaking abilities have sharpened, with obvious attention being paid to explain that “nice” doesn’t mean “wimp.”

Pawlenty’s goal is no be the “not Mitt Romney” candidate whom the base can rally around. Those who will never forgive Romney for RomneyCare (a majority of the primary electorate, I suspect) will look for an alternative. And he could well be that candidate.

His road is made easier by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s serial gaffes and initial embrace of a conservative brand of isolationism. And meanwhile, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’s wife is hinting that there’s no sign Daniels is ready to take the plunge

    ******************************************
    rdw

Jennifer Rubin is a sharp observer of the conservative scene now at the Wash Post. You don’t want to under-estimate Tim. He’s a genuinely nice guy the opposite of Obama in terms of stiffness and arrogance but also without the charisma. Still he’s got a good track record and is from a very important state that could easily deliver him a win. This is a wide open primary and the majority of coverage of him by the conservative media has been quite good. Which is all that matters in primaries.

Right now Obama’s negatives are so high and his polls among independents so low the charisma gap won’t be a show stopper with conservatives. We are already confident Obama is not going to carry FL, NC, VA, OH or IN this time and that’s going to make the race much closer, 273 – 265. If Tim were to get NH he has a tie and would win in the House. Tim could easily carry MN or IA with a reasonable chance at CO, NV, NM and even PA. I don’t expect Obama to lose NH but he is polling under 45%.

PA is going to be hard for Obama. He won easily in 2008 but the recession hit hard and Rendell left a mess. Senator Casey has even less charisma than Pawlenty and has supported 100% of Obama’s agenda much of which is unpopular. There are a few interesting GOP candidates who if they run will be well funded with Tea Party assistance. This is very winnable seat. Obama is going to have to spend considerable time and expense here which means less time for Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Minnesota, etc.

  • rdw56

It’s more than his campaign staff. It’s too early to get a lot of attention because most people aren’t focused. The real political types are and this is all good stuff. He will get feedback and he will learn from it. Serious observers have consistently noted he’s become a better speaker and campaigner over the last year because he learns and he’s getting a lot of practice.

  • rdw56

It’s you and 99% of your liberal pals. You do every GOP primary season. I do the same thing. I always though Al Gore was a horses ass and Kerry a drone. What were biden and Dodd doing running for President. Hillary has absolutely nothing to offer except her name and Obama is the least experienced and accomplished man to ever hold the office. He can speak but so can Ted Baxter.

  • Art Pepper

    the “not Mitt Romney” candidate

But Romney is the “pivot in the same direction as everyone else” candidate, so that could be amusing.

  • rdw56

Mitt has some problems but he’s not as weak as everyone thinks he is either. I’d be fine with either one of them. Newt will make it fun doing the best job trashing Obama but I think he’s got no shot. I also expect Michele Bachmann will make some noise as the TP candidate but it will primarily be to make fiscal conservative a big issue and to gain experience and name recognition for a Senate run later.

    Aww, rdw56,

Are you still upset that the Community Organizer got elected? As far a comparison to Ted Baxter, I think our last president is much more like the character than our current one. As far as having very little experience, I suggest you research a little history. Would you rather have James Buchanan or Abe Lincoln?

  • fhmadvocat

    rdw56,

Don’t overestimate Pawlenty. I’m originally from Minnesota and I can tell you he left the state a mess. While the Republicans won the legislature, Mark Dayton, for whom Conservatives consider over emotional won the Governorship. So Pawlenty couldn’t even deliver the Governorship to the GOP. Sorry, even Pawlenty can’t deliver to the Republicans a state that has only gone Republican once (1972) since 1960.

You can laugh at Obama’s negatives. Liberals made the same mistake in 2004. They thought they could run anyone against Bush and win. Guess what, it didn’t work.

Romney’s the leading Republican and I beileve it is his race to win or lose. In truth, the Republicans will beat themselves during the primary which will raise the negatives of whomever emerges as the Republican nominee.

Fact, the only presidents to lose re-election since 1972 were those who were challenged during the primaries. Bush took some hits during his first term, but he was not challenged. Daddy Bush, whom I think did a rather decent job, was hurt by Pat Buchanan and done in by Ross Perot.

A generic Republican probably could beat Obama in 2012, but I don’t think a real Republcan will.

Newt should not run. He would just embarrass himself. Frankly, if I were a Republican I would be embarrassed that someone like him thinks he can win the nomination, and I respected Newt back in the day.

Michelle Bachmann is an embarrassment to the state of Minnesota. There is no way she could win statewide office. Now Minnesota has had some kooky people in office, including an ex-wrestler and a guy who later became foreign minister of Croatia, but even Michelle Bachmann is too crazy for statewide office.

Well, who knows? After all, a Community Organizer with a couple of years in the U.S. Senate was elected to the White House! Anything can happen! LOL

  • rdw56

I’m not at all upset about Obama getting elected. I am old enough my 1st vote was for tricky Dick. I understand my guy isn’t going to win every time and as has happened since 1968 Democrats don’t really win elections. Republican lose them. Ford lost due to Nixons scandals. GHWB lost due to his tax increase generating a 3rd party candidate. McCain never had a shot due to Bush fatigue.

The flip side of that is Carter followed Nixon/Ford and was so inept he allowed a guy the MSM thought was so far right he was unelectable. Clinton ran as a centrist, a new democrat, understanding if he ran as a tax and spend liberal he didn’t have a prayer. Except for his 1st and last year he was reasonably centrist giving each side something. The biggest gift Clinton gave the GOP was the House for the 1st time since Truman.

As far as Obama he’s looking like Carter. The midterms were the best results for the GOP since 1928 and they will almost certainly own both houses of Congress in 2012 with a decisive mandate to balance the budget using spending cuts. Obama is so weak now he could not raise taxes even 1% on millionaires. He’s also fully endorsed and even enhanced all of GWBs national security and defense policies.

Sometimes it’s not clear while it’s happening but what seems to be a step backwards is really several steps forward. The model is Carter. If not for Jimmy there is a very good chance out tax rates are 70% and the cold war is still on.

  • rdw56

Not that far off topic. Liberals need to put 2012 in the context of 2004 and 2000. 2008 was an outlier, Obama didn’t carry MI in 2008 and he’s not getting it in 2012. With an anchor like Mccaskill he might not even campaign there.

Governors don’t have VPs to pick up the next term. They don’t have coattails. In fact it’s his record of fiscal austerity, his battles with the democrat congress and his mastery of detail that makes him an attractive candidate.

When you think of him you think as a liberal would. If you want to gain any understanding of GOP politics you need to think like a conservative.

What do you think campaigns have been about the last 200 years? You defend your record and attack the other guys record. There are no perfect candidates. You need to be able to both promote those things the base will appreciate and explain away or otherwise minimize the poor choices. What is encouraging about Pawlenty as noted in the Jennifer Rubin piece is he’s introduced himself to a much larger segment of the GOP base, those most interested in politics, and has avoided any serious pitfalls while developing a much better game. Mitt has healthcare. Newt has his life. Palin is so polarizing. Tim has a charisma deficit but has made serious strides in his presentation this year developing a more appealing message and improving his delivery. While far from flashy he’s a very likable guy with his strengths lining up with the top issues.

  • Matt

Ho-hum. Yet another unexciting Republican declaring a run for president that will do nothing to fire up the base. T-Paw is considered a heretic among the Teas Party, and he is dead wrong if he thinks promising to destroy Medicare and Social Security will win him independents and moderate Dems. Karl Rove: How to win the 2012 Republican presidential nomination
    By Jennifer Rubin

I caught up with Karl Rove, at least by phone, in Austin. In the public’s mind, he’s become so identified with President George W. Bush that it’s easy to forget he remains one of the savviest political analysts, in part because of his encyclopedic memory of Republican races.

On the day Tim Pawlenty announced his exploratory committee I asked Rove what he thought of the former Minnesota governor’s pre-campaign. He responded, “I think he is much improved from a year ago.” He praised Pawlenty for a “much sharper, crisper message” and, more importantly, for “a better explanation of his record as governor.”

    ************************************

Tim is going to be a factor in the race and if he continues to improve while avoiding gaffes he’ll have a solid shot.
