The Wisdom of Dan Quayle

As someone who once defended the laziness of Fred Thompson from the scorn of a workaholic political-media culture, I’m going to high-five Dan Quayle for this:

“I’m glad [Obama is] out playing golf. I happen to be a golfer. I think presidents deserve down time. And believe me, he is in constant communication with what’s going on… I mean, what do you want him to do, stay in his house and be on the phone with the ambassador to Japan all the time?”

Of course, from Obama’s perspective it’d be nice if someone not plagued by a reputation for being a lightweight were making this case. And, in the case of a horrifying nuclear catastrophe, yeah, you probably want him on the phone a lot. Still, Obama will take what he can get….

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

As bad as Obama’s poll numbers are right now, and the outlook that he couldn’t beat Porky Pig in 2012, the embracing of Republican Candidates like Romney and Huntsman. The only thing left is for him to reveal he will attempt to run on both parties’ tickets, a (D) and (R) behind his name. LOL

I think righties should be happy that he spends so much time gofling. I mean if it’s so time consuming then he won’t have time to implement and oversee the (takes deep breath) Socialist Fascists Communist Atheist Muslim Brotherhood Kenyan plot to destroy America.

*sigh* If it were OUR disaster, yes, and I suspect he would be. Sheesh people.

It’s a good match .We have someone who was plagued by a reputation for being a lightweight defending someone who is a lightweight.

The difference one was a Vice-President and the other is pretending to be a President

GHWB needed someone with even less charisma and imagination than he had to make him look better for the campaign trail.
    .
Danny more than fit the bill on both counts.

That also explains Biden the human foot swallower.

The VP shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow the President on a campaign.

Danny may have liked golf but, if reports are correct, he’s lucky Marilyn didn’t make him WEAR one of his clubs when leaving the house on more than one occasion.

    Agreed.

Every president has his vices (or I’m more likely to believe, stress relievers)
    GWB played golf too.
Remember Big Bill and his love of fast food and women? (Or for that matter JFK)
How about we find some sort of crazy habit for each president.

  • deconstructiva

Not crazy habit but many prez’s were into football. Ford was most notable: he was really good at Michigan and his team won two national titles. Yes, of course he was into golf too like all good prez’s.

  • afguy

Ford was not only good at football, but “1935 Collegiate All-Star football team” good…

With Bill, was it “fast food and women” or “food and fast women”? I forget…

As for JFK, three words… “Jackie” and “Marilyn Monroe”.

    .
Mr. Crowley: Do you have inside infromation about how much time the President has spent in regard to the Japanese disaster? This is your second post today that proposes a POV about which you can have no knowledge. And, do you really know that Obama is in the least concerned with the latest right wing talking points? Why not bring up their current hysteria over his participating in bracket musing and his fun filled vacation in Rio (as stated by Pat Buchanan)?

  • sacredh

I resent your implication that Kenya is involved.

If playing golf is a stress reliever, then by all means, play golf. If clearing brush does the trick, clear brush. I’m not smart enough to get stressed out and I also don’t really care about a whole lot of stuff I can’t control, but I like to work in the yard. I have fun doing it and it usually tires me out enough that I sleep well that night. THEN I’m ready to deal with things that need dealt with.

The building in the background looks suspiciously like his house and office so it’s not as if he’s unable to take a few steps if he’s needed. Besides, I think the Prime Minister of Japan has his hands full enough without having to be distracted by other people giving him an earful or advice on how to run his own country. If Obama had a meltdown going on on the east coast, would we want the leaders of France, Germany, England, Spain and everybody else tying HIM up on the phone?
