Rape and Revolution

Jeffrey Goldberg is right to be disgusted by the various attempts to make light–or to make a political point–out of the sexual assault and beating visited upon Lara Logan of CBS. The attack is yet another reminder that those cowering, sniveling members of the mainstream media who actually go out and report things are not so cowardly or sniveling after all. I am constantly amazed by the courage shown by my fellow journalists, male and female, in extremely difficult circumstances. And their absence from the streets of Iran this week demonstrates just how important the work they do is: there really are no reliable accounts of what’s happening to the protesters there. For all we know, the numbers killed and wounded might have dwarfed the hundreds of victims in Egypt’s revolution.

An Iranian friend reminds me, apropos of Lara Logan, that there were wild depravities–gang rapes–visited upon the male protesters taken prisoner in Iran during the 2009  post-election demonstrations. Unseen, with victims who were not celebrities, these atrocities received little notice in the west. Yes, the social networking has been crucial to the current prairie fire–but without the international camera crews, and reporters like Lara, Richard Engel (it was so much fun to watch him interviewing the triumphant young Egyptians in Arabic) and the fine CNN crew, Egypt would never have happened. And so I have less than zero patience for those who would make light, or make hay, of the Logan tragedy. I pray she recovers fully and soon.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know, until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, were the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, whom Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

I’m confused over the circumstances. If LL was out covering the celebrations there shouldn’t have been any targeting of media (since it appeared that most if not all of the restrictions were lifted after ‘Moo’ left). But it looked as though a Moo goon squad did this to her.
Dare I say, I hope whoever did this wasn’t reacting to LL having an affair with a married man and having a kid out of wedlock, thinking she’s “easy.” Even if so, there’s no excuse for what they did.

“As Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams observed:
    .
“In a stunningly offensive blog post titled ‘Lara Logan, CBS Reporter and Warzone “‘It Girl,’” Raped Repeatedly Amid Egypt Celebration’ for LA Weekly, writer Simone Wilson managed to mention Logan’s ‘shocking good looks and ballsy knack for pushing her way to the heart of the action’ before getting to the assault itself. She then went on to imagine how it happened: ‘In a rush of frenzied excitement, some Egyptian protestors apparently consummated their newfound independence by sexually assaulting the blonde reporter.’ Well, sure, what other motive for an assault could there be, given that Logan is, in Wilson’s words, a ‘gutsy stunner’ with ‘Hollywood good looks’? And how else do Egyptians celebrate anyway but with a gang assault? It’s not like she deserved it, but well, she is hot, right?”

And what may be missing here is the naive assumption the press today makes. To me, this is not about politics, it’s about common sense. I admire anyone who is dedicated to their work, whatever their line of work is. And I admire someone who is willing to risk danger and death for a greater cause, such as protecting one’s fellow man or defending freedom and country. This woman was doing neither. She was merely trying to climb the “corporate ladder” so to speak. Should it have happened? No. Did she deserve it? No. Are the two-legged animals that did it reprehensible? Yes. But for her to go into a country on the edge of widespread violence, possibly war, where deaths have occurred, and where women are generally viewed as second-class citizens at best and chattel or property at worst, and to go to GROUND ZERO, merely for the chance to climb a rung on the corporate ladder towards being the next Katie Couric? Stupid, just plain stupid. And sometimes stupidity hurts. If my boss told me to go do my job in the middle of that mess I’d tell him I’m sorry, no; fire me if you must. I’ll live to find another job. I’m sorry it happened to her, but I’m even more sorry she doesn’t have the common sense to conclude that her life is more important that “the scoop” or an “attagirl” from the boss. It’s not the first time I’ve watched the news and said to myself “I can’t believe that idiot is stupid enough to be there just for a story”. It’s also why I believe that most journalists don’t have a lot of common horse sense, so I take what they say with a grain of salt. No matter what side of the aisle they lean towards.

  • nflfoghorn

So don’t be born female, don’t have good looks, don’t make journalism your profession and don’t do what men would do. Got it.

  • np042

No, Paul, extremist Muslims are generally not known for their respect of women. To paint all Muslims as such is either disingenuous at best or perhaps outright bigoted at worst. To paint so many people (millions of which are your fellow Americans) with such a broad stroke is ridiculous.

I certainly hope that on the day when the Tea Party turns from metaphorically raping the poor to actually physically raping individuals that they will be roundly criticized from many quarters, certainly from the MSM. I fear that Fox News would find some way of justifying them. For all I know, Michelle Malkin is developing a warped rationale, even as we speak.

  • americanwithabrain

How sexist of me to OBSERVE that women are not respected by men and treated as equals of men in lots of 3rd world countries, and it could be dangerous for a woman to go to such a place, especially when law and order are breaking down.

Next thing you know I’ll be EVEN MORE SEXIST and OBSERVE that men can’t bear children.

Or maybe I was sexist because I didn’t go right on over to Egypt and make all those backwards-thinking people change their minds?

Interesting, a new liberal credo: Someone who observes sexist behavior and identifies it as such is a sexist themselves.

Do any of you actually analyze your own thoughts? These posts would lead me to doubt it.

    .
In another time the reaction to this atrocity would have meant consequences for the people who perpetrated it. Today, with Obama in the White House, there is little chance of Egypt even losing a nickel of the handouts we provide them.

  • np042

Really? You can read the minds of the majority of Muslims to determine that? (Just as you and your brethren can apparently read liberal minds to determine their goals to destroy America) You have nothing but your own distorted view to determine that.

    .

    .
Yes – it’s Obama’s fault that the reporter got raped. Not the perps, but Obama. He should stop all aid to Egypt awaiting the execution of the criminals of this horrible act. Just as we should stop any aid to any state if they ever let a crime go unpunished.

  • http://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/ Timothy D. Naegele

To be “gang raped” by an angry crowd has to be one of the most humiliating, degrading and hurtful experiences that a woman can ever live through. And it is something that she will never recover from, fully.

A friend of mine’s daughter was raped at a fraternity party, numerous times, when she was drunk. She switched to another college campus, but the emotional scars never left her.

Another old friend’s daughter was raped twice, when she was a young girl. She is in her 70s now, and she still carries the emotional scars and believes it was her fault.

It is so sad and tragic. War-torn areas in Africa and elsewhere breed such conduct by men. What happened to Afghan women under the Taliban rule was inhuman. It is one of the reasons why I support that war, and never want to see the Taliban in control ever again.

Laura Bush has been a champion of the rights of Afghan women, and of course she is right. Barack Obama is in the process of cutting and running from that country, as fast as he can, which is pathetic and tragic.

Equally outrageous is human trafficking, which enslaves women around the world, including many in the United States.

    See http://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/2010/12/03/barack-obama-is-a-lame-duck-president-who-will-not-be-reelected/#comment-1102 and http://naegeleblog.wordpress.com/2009/12/28/human-trafficking/

  • np042

I could say the same to you. No where in the poll did it ask whether or not the majority of muslims in those seven countries (not the entire world) favored Sharia Law. In fact, in all but Pakistan, a democracy is viewed as the preferable form of government. (Pakistant has a plurality at 42%) And in all bu Turkey a majority are concerned about Islamic extremism. (Turkey is at 39%)
    .
In fact, if you go further into the actual data, you’d find that on most issues concerning Sharia, such as harsh punishments for things such as stealing or leaving Islam, there is no agreement. Stoning for adultery wavers from below 20% to over 80% in different countries. The same can be said for gender segregation in the workplace. And there is also a large swing as to whether Islam even plays a large role in politics.
    .
But, it’s easy to link to a site full of confirmation bias.

Well it’s nice that you have found compassion:
    .
    http://bikyamasr.com/wordpress/?p=5794
    .

CAIRO: An American Christian organization accused the Egyptian government of involvement in “raping and the coercive disappearance of Coptic girls and forcing them to convert to Islam” and accused Cairo of “trafficking Coptic girls and women in Egypt.” The International Christian Solidarity Organization, an American-based Christian group, sent a letter to American President Barack Obama demanding he intervene to “save” Christians in Egypt.

America In Arabic news agency reported that the ICSO, a conservative Christian American Organization known for sponsoring conferences and campaigns to promote the claims of the persecution of Copts in Egypt, accused the Egyptian Government, in a letter sent to President Obama, of involvement in these crimes. The organization said that such crimes in Egypt are “a widespread phenomenon” and are consistent with “recognized definitions of trafficking in human beings,” which represents a “crime against humanity.”

The organization claimed in the letter that Pope Shenouda III, the head of the Egyptian Coptic Church objected to what the organization described as the “trafficking of Christian women in Egypt” and attributed remarks to him.

The organization said in the letter that “trafficking in Christian women in Egypt is not a new phenomenon, as Pope Shenouda III, the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church protested this explicitly in 1976, when he said ‘there is pressure on Coptic girls to convert to Islam and to get the married to Muslims by threatening and terrorizing them’,” said the letter.

    .
    .
Finally you might want to read what the minority on the ground in Egypt says about Islam:
    .
    http://www.petition2congress.com/2798/the-status-coptic-in-egypt-as-2010/
    .
    10. A Stop to all the Muslim propaganda in the western world that calls for Jihad as is not true Islam; moreover, that Islam is peace when in fact Islam and Jihad is inseparable. Islam calls for death to all non-Muslims regardless of who they are (Christians, Westerners, Jewish, atheist, gays, etc..)

  • americanwithabrain

You people don’t listen very well. Or only hear what you want. I’m not trying to rationalize or justify what the mob did. I’m talking about knowingly walking into harm’s way for fame, fortune, or money, and it makes no difference if the harm is just or unjust. If she had intentionally walked into a fire, I wouldn’t debate the righteousness of the fire – it would be a stupid act on her part if it was arson or a backyard Bar-B-Que. The moral status of the crowd is not a factor; the act of walking into harm’s way to climb the “talking head” food chain is stupid either way.

  • liberalmeltdown

This is how a “moderate Muslim” government treats its minority population:
    .

    .
These people are totally ignored by the MSM, and President Obama. Most of you don’t even know that they exist. There are millions in Egypt. Their fate won’t get better, with the reality of a more hardcore Islamic state in Egypt.

  • liberalmeltdown

Since President Obama professes to be a Christian, these millions of persecuted Egyptians are his brethren. Yet, did he demand that they have a seat at the table? No.
    .
Where is the press? We have had hundreds of stories about how oppressive the Mubarak government was toward Muslims…but this story gets ignored.
    .

So I take it you’re in close contact with State Dept. officials and the Egyptian military, yes? Otherwise your conjecture is complete garbage. No one can reasonably predict what will come out of this process in Egypt, certainly not someone as utterly clueless as you.

  • diecash1

Since President Obama professes to be a Christian

    Dog-whistle much?

Yet, did he demand that they have a seat at the table? No.

Again, how exactly do you know? You have no idea what Obama has or has not done or if it would make any difference if he did “demand” that they get a seat at the table. How is it that you’re so utterly partisan and so very clueless? Oh…nevermind. That question answers itself.

  • liberalmeltdown

Yeah, I’m a partisan. Gibbs was asked directly about the Muslim Brotherhood, as was Obama. They gave their blessing to the MB. Who’s got the power?
    .
You would expect someone who claims to be a Christian to want to help his own, would you not?
    .
Or, does that only work for race?
    .
The fact is that the world, including the President and the MSM is ignoring the real tragedy, as are you.

  • newfreedomblog

“You would expect someone who claims to be a Christian to want to help his own, would you not?”

    .
For one you have to want to believe that Obama is Christian, even after his self-professing he did on National Prayer Day in Washington a few days ago.
    .
No, the peril the Christians have in Egypt will only get worse. Worse to the point they will either die or be forced to leave their home, if not out and out killed on the spot as the radicals take control of Egypt.
    .
As Iran is right this very minute sending in their naval ships to be docked at ports in the Mediterranean Sea, pressure is building in the middle east. Israel will be reacting to this I am sure. God be with all the people in the Middle East, we have only just begun to see the conflict I am afraid.

  • apr2563

nflfoghorn: I am sorry but why bring that up?

  • apr2563

My G*d freeper, does every thing have to political to you? Do you have to relate every story have to feed into your bigotry and paranoia? Could you be more self-centered?

  • apr2563

americanwitha brain: You are the definition of stupidity.

  • apr2563

Why don’t all the males on this thread giving advice to Lara Logan wait to hear from her. She is the victim. I am sure she will speak soon.
    .
    http://www.popcenter.org/problems/trafficked_women/PDFs/Tiefenbrun_2002.pdf
    .
“More than 2,000,000 women around the world are bought and sold each year for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Sex trafficking originates in source
countries with a high incidence of poverty, a low regard for women, few educational and economic opportunities for women, insufficient public awareness
about the crime of trafficking, and inadequate laws to prosecute traffickers.
Destination countries are usually relatively rich. That is why 50,000 of these 2,000,000 women are trafficked into the United States each year in a lucrative sex
    trade industry.”
    .
Hard to speak about US purity when it comes to the rights and treatment of women.

  • diecash1

For one you have to want to believe that Obama is Christian

Again, nice dog-whistle rustyblogwhore. You are the epitome of ignorant. That Obama sure fooled us by being a secret Muslim. Not you though rustybloghwhore; nope, he didn’t fool you. You just keep on being an ignorant reactionary peddling Beck’s paranoid fantasies. Moron.

  • shepherdwong

Shepherdwong is concerned that nothing can be done because Obama is beholden to the nefarious corporate interests.
    .
Yes, I was saying that the whole problem started when Obama was elected and had nothing to do with all of Congressional Republicans and half of Congressional Democrats being a wholly-owned subsidiary of Corporate Inc.
    .
Still a moron. Still an @sshole.

  • paulejb

    shepherdwong@12.9,
    .
I see that your sterling wit is sharp as ever, Wong. Of course, that’s not saying much at all.
    .
For some reason you just can’t seem to get your head around the fact that big government and big business go hand in hand. And the party of big government is not the Republican party. It is the people with the D after their name who wallow at the troughs of corporate America.
    .
Take Obama, for example, in 2008 alone he scooped up a cool million from the shady Goldman Sachs.

  • paulejb

    hippooath@13,
    .
I see that you have about as much faith in these so called “revolutionaries” as I do. And that seems to be none.
    .
What happened to Lara Logan will seem like a cake walk when these “freedom fighters” take off after their 8 million Christian neighbors.

  • diecash1

It is the people with the D after their name who wallow at the troughs of corporate America

Talk about completely feckless. Shep really nailed it. You’re a moron. It’s the Dems that are the party of corporate america? Even you can’t believe that, as dense as you are. Those Repubs are pure as they driven snow……yeah, in your fantasy land maybe.

  • paulejb

    diecash1,
    .
You don’t have to be in close contact with the State Dept or the Egyptian military to know that Barack Obama’s, Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper is a flaming moron who believes that the Muslim Brotherhood is ” largely secular” and is not in “pursuit of violence.” This at the same time as a spokesman for he group is calling for the closure of the Suez Canal and war with Israel.
    .
And that my friends is the crackerjack leadership of the Obama administration. This crowd couldn’t find their own arse with two hands and a road map.

  • paulejb

    diecash1@12.11,
    .
Sorry, boyo. In 2008, Wall Street money was flowing into Democrat coffers by the barrel. How do you think that Obama raised $700 million and took no matching funds? It wasn’t McDonald’s workers putting up the cash.
    .
Anyone who denies the connection between big business and big government is either living in a cloud or willfully blind.

  • liberalmeltdown

17.1 die, I know you don’t give $hit about anybody other than what your idiot Democrat Party programs you to care about.
    .
The US state department doesn’t care about these people, they are too busy congratulating themselves on how well they handled the revolt. Meaning: despite the Obama administrations stupid comments and constant contradictions, they managed to not start a full blown Middle East war…yet.
    .
The MB will persecute these people like the Muslims have for the last 1400 years. I don’t need a freakin’ crystal ball to see that. You, however, can’t see past your liberal butt check blinders.

  • diecash1

    I know

The simple fact is that everytime you open your mouth, you demonstrate that you don’t know squat. You don’t know what the WH has or has not done, what I care about or much of anything else. You’ve got your preconceived ideas and a thoroughly closed mind and not much else. Stick with what you know — not much.

  • liberalmeltdown

Oh, OK die. The White House is secretly negotiating for the Copts in Egypt and they wouldn’t want anybody to know. Just like they have been secretly helping the people of Iran since 2009. Maybe they are sending the Copts in Egypt a better grade of garbage to live in.
    .
I would be open to a discussion, but this subject makes your little liberal head explode, and all you can muster is shut up as a response.
    .
Not much better response from you than a 3 year old could come up with.

  • diecash1

I would be open to a discussion

If you were really open to a “discussion”, you’d quit talking out of your a$$. You’re entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts. Once you figure that out, you might be able to have an actual discussion about something. Thus far you’ve continued to use the right-wing technique of mind-reading to discern your “facts.” That’s less impressive than any three year old I know.

  • np042

npo042 wants to cut off aid to Afghanistan and Iraq where our troops have sacrificed so much to try to establish civility. For some reason he also wants to cut off aid to our most reliable ally in the region.

You really do have quite the gift of reading behind, around, and through the lines while completely ignoring what I acutally said.
    .
What you said: “Attacks on Americans should not happen in places where Uncle Sucker’s cash keeps the place afloat. Cut off the cash and the majority will sort the bad actors out to get back on the dole.”
    .
To which I responded with a list of places where Americans have been attacked. Going by your previous statement, you are the one who wants to cut off aid to Afghanistan, Iraq, and “our most reliable ally in the region.” But please, continue to ignore what people say and only comment on what you think they said. Nowhere did I advocate for an end to aid to those places; you did.
