Meg Whitman, who lost her campaign for California Governor last November, spent four times as much as her opponent, Jerry Brown, and $144 million of her own fortune. California Watch, an investigative reporting site, breaks down some of the numbers of just how much her staff got paid:

Republican campaign strategist Scott Howell was paid $5.5 million. The corporate jets of ACM Aviation cost $1.1 million. The campaign staff was well compensated: campaign manager Jill Hasner ($948,000); senior adviser Jeff Randle ($550,000); finance director Sara Myers ($439,438); deputy campaign managers W. Todd Cranney ($389,000) and Tucker Bounds ($324,572.)

Now it should be said that not all checks go straight into the pockets of all recipients. The check to Howell, for instance, could involve the labors of several people at his firm. But still, these are big sums for a single campaign cycle.
