What Obama Can Say On Guns

Guns are as charged a topic as ever. But when the President takes up the issue in the near future, as aides have indicated he’ll do, there are a multitude of measures he can endorse without endangering himself politically. Here’s my story on Time.com.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

AcCongresswoman injured and many killed and injured in Tucson by s shooter. One killed, 11 injured at a frat party in Youngstown, Ohio by a couple of angry participants.
    .
And we’re worried about the POLITICAL danger for someone?

  • newfreedomblog

Senior White House aides have said the President will address the gun issue sometime soon, though they’ve declined to offer specifics on the timing and format.

    .
Well Alex, we have to have our polling numbers before we can come out on any position. Isn’t that what this means? Did you even ask that as a question when you cite un-named Senior White House aides?
    .

“According to the Center for Responsive Politics, gun-control advocates spent $57,900 during the 2008 election, while the gun-rights lobby shelled out $2.4 million, or 41 times more.”

    .
Now you are onto something. Not only out-gunned, but more importantly out-spent.. The gun lobby is so powerful that anyone attempting to go up against it is crushed. Obama knows this, or at least his “Senior White House Aides” know this is a fact.
    .
But, I do hope he tackles this issue. I hope he goes into it in 2012 with the zeal of any good liberal who opposes gun rights.

  • hernandezusa

Guns don’t kill people, PEOPLE kill PEOPLE.

The Shooter is AZ is a nut case that was ignored by the college and the parents…he vented his Left leaning views on one particular congressman. If he didn’t have a gun he would have used something else to kill PEOPLE.

It’s amazing when Americans are killed by our Southern neighbors there is no EMOTIONAL outcry to seal the borders and protect Americans from the liberal media and make sure Armed border patrol agents and military are there.

Stop blaming guns and go after the morons who kill the innocent.

  • nflfoghorn

That he’s been largely silent on this issue hasn’t stopped gun-rights people from jumping on him. Fear is a great motivator.
Why isn’t the right (or the left?) as gung-ho on asking the SC for a clear ruling on a 2nd Amendment case like they are with HCR?

  • nflfoghorn

“If he didn’t have a gun he would have used something else to kill PEOPLE”
    .
If he had a knife in a public place he could’ve been stopped at the first stabbing.
Are you suggesting he should’ve used a bomb instead?

  • nflfoghorn

Re: the identity of White House senior aides, Plouffe, Axelrod and Gibbs have all spoken on the record about this. (See, e.g., http://bit.ly/hk8Q1B) White House declined to give me any further info beyond their prior remarks.

I’m waiting for a mass killing involving the names “Louisville Slugger” or “Calloway”.
    .
Also, haven’t seen any mention of someone who got pissed off and just happened to bring a truck loaded with explosives with them for “self-protection”…
    .
Very weak, ‘winger… VERY weak. But I know that won’t keep you from bringng it back up like a bad taco.

This is a big week for guns and the people who want to carry them. The question: Just how big?
    .
The Supreme Court ruled on Monday, June 28, in a challenge to Chicago’s gun-control law, that Americans in all 50 states have a constitutional right to possess firearms for self-defense. Gun-rights supporters are ecstatic about the decision. The floodgates are now open for lawsuits challenging state and local gun-control laws nationwide.

  • freeinpa

The left still avoids there are more babies killed by abortion than by guns every year. But may be we should outlaw school buses too.
    .
“Two people were killed and as many as 50 injured Thursday in a wreck involving two school buses, a semi and an SUV about 40 miles outside of St. Louis, Missouri, authorities said.”
    .
Of course the left will argue it was the SUV fault and they should be banned . Of course it was probably driven by a liberal soccer om texting on her cell phone while drinking her non-fat latte from Starbucks

  • allthingsinaname

“Guns don’t kill people, PEOPLE kill PEOPLE.”
    .
Exactly keeping guns out of people’s hands would solve a lot of problems.

  • nflfoghorn

Most people don’t use vehicles as a means to injure/kill other people.
And what does this have to do with abortion rights, Mr. Non-Sequitur?

  • afguy

Dunno, free. Sounds like an accident.
    .
BUT… did one of the school-bus drivers intentionally drive into the other and cause the melee because they were pissed off at the other driver and didn’t care who went with him?
    .
Did the assailants accidentally shoot 12 people at that frat party? Did the little girl die Tucson because the shooter only meant to shoot Giffords (and needed 31 rounds to do it).
    .
I’m sure the result would have been the same if either had been throwing knives or swinging a bat. We all know they are just as accurate and lethal.

  • nflfoghorn

    #1 bad link
#2 I don’t think the case you cite was for “all 50 states” as you proclaim. And even if it does, it still doesn’t answer the question of what a “well-regulated militia” is.

  • ohiolibb

Now now, nfl. You know you can’t cite the actual constitution when when dealing with trolls. It conflicts with their deeply held psychosis.

About the only thing Obama can say about guns is “Be careful with them.”
    .
And, even then, he’ll be accused of having the Washington “nanny state” tell us Americans what to do…

  • diecash1

he vented his Left leaning views on one particular congressman

More idiocy from another right-winger. Nice attempt to paint this whackjob as “Left leaning”. #FAIL. He was a nut, not a “Left leaning” nut or a “tea party” nut, just a mentally unstable nut. You, however, are a despicable POS.

  • allthingsinaname

“You, however, are a despicable POS.”
    .
You probably should stop complimenting him like that.

  • freeinpa

“He was a nut, not a “Left leaning” nut or a “tea party” nut, just a mentally unstable nut. You, however, are a despicable POS.”
    .
This is priceless. The left (folks here included) joined the MSM and liberals pols in trying to pin the shootings on the TP and conservative talk radio. When it emerged that philosophically he was more attuned to being a liberal– he became an unstable nut.
    .
I don’t recall you spewing bile at the MSM and left nut jobs here for trying to make him a TP or talk radio follower. I guess that makes you a POS as well.

  • freeinpa

“Why isn’t the right (or the left?) as gung-ho on asking the SC for a clear ruling on a 2nd Amendment case like they are with HCR”

Gee now why wouldn’t there be a rush to the SC to tell us what is written into the Constitution for over 200 years in a few short lines versus a 2300 page document written by over zealous left wing nuts?

    .
That is a perplexing matter—for those without an ounce of sense

Compare and contrast and you get the true Obama. Same with Egypt and Iran. Compare and contrast the statements and policy. Who does Obama favor? Muslims. Not just Muslims, but radical Muslims.

  • freeinpa

Or maybe he can get Congress to pass a law requiring a warning label on it like: Don’t drink alcohol while pregnant, or use a ladder on ice or use an electronic device in a bathtub.
    .
At least the lawyers then can sue and the left will get more money in their campaign coffers from another special interest group they supposedly detest.

  • diecash1

This is priceless. The left (folks here included) joined the MSM and liberals pols in trying to pin the shootings on the TP and conservative talk radio. When it emerged that philosophically he was more attuned to being a liberal– he became an unstable nut.

Feel free to point out specifically where I did so. In the aftermath of the shootings, I don’t recall anyone here saying he was a right-wing nutter. Put up or shut up.

I guess that makes you a POS as well.

Only in your small-minded world of false equivalence. I suppose it takes one to know one, huh freeper? You, the ultimate in bile-spewing, are a clown.

  • afguy

Just wondering, but is this pathological lovefest for a chunk of machined metal that spits out slugs of lead designed to kill people what the Almightly had in mind when he said, “I am the Lord your God… thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Wonder how the Evangelical Right deals with this? Or have they stopped thinking about it at all?

“I don’t recall anyone here saying he was a right-wing nutter. Put up or shut up”
    .
You don’t recall? You either brain dead, lying or both. This is the typical 5th graders response when the left is called playing in their own feces.
    .
“Only in your small-minded world of false equivalenc”
    .
. Oh today’s playbook response for their stupidity is false equivalence. Hard to keep up I saw irony today too from one of your brethren. Its hard to keep your stock excuses straight

    .
But I see you didn’t actaul deny being a POS after you feign innocence and spew bile and name call while accusing someone else of it. So POS, liar and delusional are now your calling card

And the list goes on and could crash a server..
    .
“if you try to argue that “right-wing vitriol” needs more proof, you’re a liar or an idiot. In any event, you won’t convince the lucid on this site, we’ve been watching and listening to right-wing hate speech about Democrats and liberals for decades now.”
    .
“Well, he also apparently liked guns. And he was big into gold-based currency ideas. A lot of what he talked about in his rantings sounded like Sovereign Citizen idiocy. Much of his paranoia would fit right in on Glenn Beck’s show. He also sounded a lot like a Tenther. He had an Ayn Rand book on his reading list, along with Mein Kampf. In other words, there are a lot of signs pointing to him being a far right wacko and/or a radical liberterian”
    .

This meshes pretty well with my feeling on the subject. Regardless Jared’s motives may be, some of the more violent rhetoric out of the extreme right now appears to be in very bad taste at best, ethically bankrupt at worst.”
    ..
Yes it is and it’s all coming from the right-wing of the body politic. Nobody on the left is talking about “Second Amendment remedies,” and Joe Biden isn’t listing political enemies and literally putting a target on them for public consumption. I’ll wait and see what this nut job’s politics are but do you really want to be he’s not a Glenn Beck fan?

  • freeinpa

“Actually, now he can say, “be careful with them…and welcome to the National Park.”
    .
Maybe we can have gun free zones right after we get government intrusion free zones

  • diecash1

You are, without a doubt, a moron. I never denied that you think I’m a POS because, given the hyperbolic vitriol you spew daily, it seems obvious that you do. The fact is that thinking is not your strong suit.
    ..
As far as your list of quotes, I fail to note anyone saying this guy was a deranged teatard (I know, that’s redundant) or some other RW idiot so what you’re demonstrating is that you have no evidence. Par for the course for you. Denigrate, name call, spew bile. Lather, rinse, repeat.
    ..
Regardless of your futile efforts to prove otherwise, how precisely was this guy a “lefty” as your compatriot, hernandez, stated? You went off on your typical tangent because you have no point. SS, DD. You failed to find anyone in the Swamp that said he was a deranged right-winger (also redundant) in the aftermath of the shootings so you blather on and on about how I didn’t rebuke anyone for something they didn’t do. You really need to learn to stay on point freeper. More facts and reason, less trollery and bile. BTW, when you start calling out your fellow right-wingers instead of cheering them on, I’ll consider policing my side of the spectrum.

  • freeinpa

I would make the same assessment of the ACLU NAACP and the NEA. Now they are fronts for special interest groups with the main goal of building an infrastructure and demand for their continuing existence

  • freeinpa

It’s great when the godless left invoke religion

Godless, free? On what do you base that statement?
    .
How well do you know me? Not at all?

    free,
    .
Do YOU consider yourself a good, church-going evangelical?
    .
Your speech and activities here would seem to indicate otherwise.
    .
However, if you do, answer the question.

  • americanwithabrain

So you want to have laws that will regulate or ban guns, guns that we know the origin of, that we track the ownership of, and that are made by law abiding citizens.

Currently, Heroin is against the law in the United States. Completely illegal to possess it or sell it. None. Zip, Zilch, Nada. This means, of course, that law-abiding US citizens do not possess or traffic in Heroin.

And there’s no Heroin at all in the US…. right?

Your gun control will accomplish EXACTLY the same thing. Only there will be something different. The law-abiding citizens who had guns before will not have them now.

And they will become easy prey for all of those who still do.

How can you be so foolish as to think banning guns will work?

Jesus told his disciples to buy swords…

Trying to remember the last time someone walked into a frat house or high school and took out a dozen or so by throwing doses of heroin at them.
    .
Maybe I missed that one. Were they using pre-loaded needles?
    .
Heroin is seldom injected without at least SOME acquiescence on the part of the victim.
    .
I harbor NO illusions about any sanity being allowed into this discussion. But you guys are really reaching when trying to defend what is happening on a much too regular basis. Support for handguns has become a major religious force in this country.

  • afguy

Jesus didn’t actually say that, did he, meltdown?
    .
But the author of the article SAID that’s what he meant.
    .
And, World News Daily… seriously, that’s your source?

  • afguy

Actually, meltdown, I’ve got a better idea.
    .
Rather than reading some wingnut’s take on what the Bible says, why don’t you try reading it yourself? Why wait for someone to tell you what it means?
    .
Pay close attention to the passages on loving your neighbor, if compelled to go one mile with someone, go with him for two, caring for the “least of these” (dirty, rottn socialists) etc.
    .
Nothing in there about taking out your ’45 and blowing the MFer away because he intruded on your space.
    .
There’s also more than a few passages on the perils of the “love of money”.
    .

  • shepherdwong

Maybe we can have gun free zones right after we get government intrusion free zones
    .
Oh, my. Under the idiotic notion that “conservatives’ don’t try to use the power of government to intrude on the private lives of American citizens?

Republican politicians in South Dakota have filed a bill that would require every citizen in the land-locked virtually empty state to buy a gun as of next year.
    .
The bill, put forward by Sioux Fall representative Hal Wick, would require every citizen over 21 to buy a firearm “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and personal preference sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense”.

Of course, if you knew any women beside your mother, you’d know better. And, BTW, she’s lying.

  • ohiolibb

Except that no one is talking about banning guns. Except you, of course. So that’s a nice straw man. Then again, if we reversed the analogy, we would end up with “everyone should have heroin” Is that your position?

  • liberalmeltdown

Maybe you should become a preacher afguy.
    .
‘There’s also more than a few passages on the perils of the “love of money”.’
    .
Whatever you need to work on.
    .
My Point is, self defense is not only common sense, but a useful deterrent to crime. In cities that ban guns crime actually goes up. Go figure.
    .
I guess criminal don’t care about gun laws either.
    .
So what do you make of this verse: Mark 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Q The Egyptian government in the past has conveyed to the Obama administration and to previous administrations that it suspects that the democracy push from the U.S. might result in something along the lines of what we’ve seen in Gaza, and that is an Islamist group being elected and gaining power, in this case the Muslim Brotherhood. How much does the Obama administration agree with that assessment?

MR. GIBBS: Well, look, Jake, I think that — as I said here last week, I think that it is — from what we can see, it’s not accurate to say that those protesting are made up of one particular group or one ideology. And I think it is clear that increase in democratic representation has to include a whole host of important non-secular actors that give Egypt a strong chance to continue to be the stable and reliable partner that the world sees in the Middle East.

    .
    .
Here is Gibbs back on 1/31 insisting that the Muslim Brotherhood a radical Islamic organization be given a seat at the table. He is asked specifically about the Muslim Brotherhood and you see his answer. This is a group whose leader wants to use children as suicide bombers.
    .
And what do you know, a week later who gets a seat at the table? The Muslim Brotherhood. Those friendly guys that just want to have a little fun with Jihad. Don’t we all?
    .
    http://articles.latimes.com/2011/feb/06/world/la-fgw-egypt-unrest-20110207
    .

    .
    .
Like I said, he favors Radical Islam. And FYI, non-secular means religious, in this case, religious zealots.
