Is the Mac Back?

Senator John McCain is heading to the White House as I type this to meet with President Obama. I have a story out in this week’s dead tree edition, out early here, on the rapprochement of the former rivals as both trek back to the political center.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

This post is the first thing I saw when I bring up Swampland today, and now I’m already fed up.

So I’ll just go ahead and show myself out.

    Agreed; boring, insipid, uninspired writing.

Could you provide 2 or 3 examples of left-wing policies Obama has pursued and tell us exactly what the “center” is?

    Thanks in advance.

Jay, kudos for keeping this story away from the paywall, but remember that Sen. Get Off My Lawn has changed positions so many times it’s fair to say that when there are two sides to an issue he’ll represent both. No wonder he’s on teevee every Sunday morning. It would be a long list of flip flops changed views. He’s like a weathervane. Or maybe he’s apologizing to Obama for introducing youwhoknow to the political world.
    .
That said, I hope YOU pin McCain down (literally) and make him do an interview. Go for it, seriously. Interview The Lion In Winter (good quote at end of your piece) and ask him the tough q’s. I’d start with, “Senator, I’m sorry but must ask the ‘elephant in the room’ question: why did you pick HER? WTF were you thinking!?” I’d ask that verbatim but of course you’d ask oh so politely, advantage goes to you.
    .
…but re-reading your first sentence, Jay, it could also mean that YOU are going to the WH to interview Obama. I’m not teasing you (really), hope you really are going to interview Obama. KT once did, remember? Hell, if Sen. Lion In Winter is there too interview ‘em both: guaranteed dead-tree cover and appearance on Hardball; maybe Matthews will even let you speak. Thanks for your thoughts, Jay.

    Is the Mac Back?

    (rolls eyes)

“The Lion in winter is starting to roar.”

    Really.

I don’t understand how continuing to write puff pieces fluffing Palin and McCain qualifies as good examples of journalism.

  • deconstructiva

Jay reported the Lion quote; she didn’t create it. I found it funny, largely because comparing McCain to The Lion In Winter’s Henry isn’t entirely flattering: too much family drama and infighting with nothing getting resolved in the end. Yep, sounds like McCain after all. Hope he doesn’t try to lock Cindy or Megan in nearby castles or dungeons.

“With the President moving to the center, memories of 2008 have faded,” says Senator Tom Carper, a Delaware Democrat … Now there’s an occasion for the two of them to get together on a bunch of issues and actually get something done. I don’t know that they’ll ever be close friends, but the President’s agenda and John’s agenda are closely aligned — so why not get together and have some fun? It could benefit the country enormously.”

LETTERMAN: How are things going in Afghanistan now?

MCCAIN: I think we’re doing fine …. I think we’ll do fine. The second phase — if I could just make one, very quickly — the second phase is Iraq. There is some indication, and I don’t have the conclusions, but some of this anthrax may — and I emphasize may — have come from Iraq.

    LETTERMAN: Oh is that right?

MCCAIN: If that should be the case, that’s when some tough decisions are gonna have to be made.

None of those things would be called socialist or left-wing, using text book definitions. In fact, when it comes to the political spectrum in the US I think it makes more sense to talk about left and right-wing liberals, as there are not many genuine communists or fascists in the country.

  • http://shortplaysaboutrealpeople.wordpress.com Michael Maiello

I’m going to spare Jay my objection that McCain can’t go “back” to a center he never inhabited and instead ask a much more important question.

    Same old sorry-ass McCain: http://www.frumforum.com/mccain-rejects-cbo-repeal-estimates

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday rejected the CBO’s cost estimate of healthcare repeal as “garbage in, garbage out.”

McCain said the Congressional Budget Office estimate that repealing the healthcare law would increase the deficit by $230 billion relies on falwed assumptions.

“So what I’m saying is, garbage in, garbage out,” McCain said on the Senate floor.

McCain cited two examples of how the CBO’s estimate is not properly taking into account the true costs of the healthcare law. First, he noted that the repeated increases in reimbursement levels to Medicare physicians, and the failure to repeatedly let cuts to those payments happen, are estimated to cost $208 billion over 10 years. “Nowhere is that put into the equation,” McCain said.

He also criticized the Community Living Assistance Services and Support (CLASS) Act, a long-term care insurance program that was part of the law.

    -
The doc fix has absolutely nothing to do with the ACA. It long preceeded it. The CLASS Act is a voluntary, self-funded program.
    -
McCain still thrives on lies when it comes to anything important.

    .

    .
Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act
    .
According to Dr Rusty, conservatives think kids should smoke more.

    Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

February 2, 2011: The RustFreep Groundhog Day Act ;)

  • freeinpa

“Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act”
    .
Let’s follow this dizzying liberal logic. The left condemns, taxes, vilifies tobacco users and tobacco industry and spends more tax money to stop smoking. Now supposedly the class action lawsuit was supposed to extort money from tobacco companies for the states to set up tobacco education programs and help with medical care. Now that money has been whizzed down a rat hole by the states as virtually none of it went for the stated cause. I think in common parlance that is fraud.
    .
Now we know the major causes of HIV are drug abuse and gay sexual activity. Now do we treat them the same as the tobacco companies were treated. No we extort more taxpayer money to enable folks to continue what many consider immoral lifestyles.

Why does the wheels fall off the wagon of liberal logic as we go from point A to point B?
    .
“Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009″
    .
Another wealth re-distribution to pay off liberal supporters – liberal women and the Bar Association. Studies have dismissed the old liberal lie that women only receive 70% of what men make. When adjusted for education, experience and time out of work force there is little difference. What you have is an open season to sue (lawyer lottery) and the ability for someone who is fired after 5-10 or 15 years now to sue. Doesn’t improve pay but it will limit how and when women are hired, employed or promoted.
