In the Arena

Olbermania

Keith Olbermann and I started from the same place, the same school, the same English teacher–Arthur Naething–who changed our lives. I’ve always had a soft spot for Keith as a result, even when he called me one of the worst people in the world (based on a wildly inaccurate interpretation of something I’d written). I’ve criticized him, too, for his melodramatically over-the-top effusions. I’m not so sure what this dispute with MSNBC is all about, but I’m sad that Keith won’t be around (at least, for a while). If there is a place for the nonsense-spew of Fox News, there has to be a place on my cable dial for Olbermann (who, while occasionally obnoxious, operates from a base of reality–unlike some people we know [see below]). Keith is a brilliant writer, and presenter; I always enjoy watching him, even when he’s occasionally wrong. I hope I’ll have the opportunity to do so again soon. In the meantime, I hope he’ll heed the words of the master and “Go forth, and spread beauty and light.”

On another decidedly hilarious front, Glenn Beck has found yet another enemy of the people in a 78-year-old Columbia University professor named Frances Fox Piven. I’ve always thought that Piven’s work was foolish and inhumane. There was a brief, disastrous time in the 1960s when her desire to flood the welfare system with new recipients was the tacit policy of the city of New York, which produced absolutely terrible results–as Daniel Patrick Moynihan predicted–in the 1970s and 1980s. I also remember Piven railing against a brilliantly successful welfare-to-work program called “America Works” because it was for-profit, even though the company only was paid by the government if the recipient remained on the job for six months (and even though the ability to do honorable work gave the women involved new-found confidence, according to study after study of the results). But the notion that Piven’s ideas had any widespread influence, or are even worth commenting on 45 years later, is beyond absurd; it is another case of Beck’s show-paranoid perversity. It seems academic and sophisticated, to those who don’t know any better: Glenn’s soooo erudite, he’s found a secret part of The Plan to turn America into a socialist gulag, hatched by a college professor. The reality is that he’s focused onto an obscure form of left-liberalism that was found wanting a long time ago, as the sociological results of Aid to Families with Dependent Children became known, and better ways to help the poor were developed.

Beck’s essential sin is a matter of proportionality. He has, as ever, latched onto an obscurity, blown it out of proportion–as he did with Van Jones’ stupid but essentially harmless comments about communism–and turned it into a lie. He is an extraordinary liar, on matters large and small, as I’ve learned from personal experience with the man. That Beck remains on the air and Keith Olbermann–unpleasant and extreme at times, but no fantasist–isn’t anymore is a travesty.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Thanks, Joe. I had never heard of Frances Fox Piven until I read that Glenn Beck had made her an enemy of the people. It is funny to take such minor figures and blow them up out of all proportion to their importance.

As to Keith, there were some things about him and his show that I used to enjoy, but stopped watching quite a while ago. Since the election, I have stopped watching all cable “news” and find that I am much happier without their approach. Although I have watched a couple of Piers Morgan interviews – Ricky Gervais and George Clooney (! who I would watch anywhere) – but think viewing will be more guided by guest than habit.

I learned about Keith last night and watched a bit of Anderson Cooper to learn more. Not surprising since he seemed to take on the bosses and any problem he had became an opportunity for the pearl clutchers to carry on about. As Greg Sargent said, Keith created the space for a liberal point of view on the air and introduced Rachel Maddow. He will be back.

Joe thank you for speaking out about Olbermann. However, what Beck says is not hilarious.
    .
Joe, this is the response that Beck’s rhetoric causes:

    .

    .
Maybe they should burst through the fron door of this arrogant elitist and slit the hateful cow’s throat.”
“We should blow up Piven’s office and home.”

“Big lots is having a rope sale I hear, you buy the rope and I will hang the wench. I will spin her as she hangs.”

    .
I posted the CCR letter on a previous thread.
    .
Already posted on another thread, Becks call to “shoot them in the head” but warning “they may shoot you”. He was speaking to the government it Washington that he disagrees with.
    .

    .
Beck, O’Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh et al use dangerous rhetoric everyday. They ignore the truth and spew their bile.
    .
When is the traditional media going to call them out? This is neither journalism or entertainment. Is the traditional media concerned they may need a job with Murdoch someday?
    .
Olbermann was one of the few real liberal voices on the air. Joe, I think it would be interesting to find out what the new Universal ownership, conservative Comcast, had to do with this leave taking. I don’t expect much when you have Howie Kurtz stating,
“Olbermann “proceeded to just denounce Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin in very vituperative terms”.
Does Kurtz really listen to Beck and Palin?
    .
I enjoyed Olbermann’s speaking to power. He was fact based. Maybe that is what scared the powerful.

Why is MSNBC always held up as a counter-balance to FOX? Seems MSNBC has liberal hours (KO and Maddow) and conservative hours (3 hr Morning Joe). They appear to be the only station that tries to strike a balance between left and right in their opinion-driven programming. While FOX… we know.
    .
To me, it’s that the 2 liberal shows (one now?) seem so shocking, so out of the norm. Shows that are not conservative/corporatist or access poisoned, equivalency seeking, sound-byte crammed “straight news” are, in fact, radical in today’s Big News Inc village punditry.

  • bobell

Mrs. bobell and I dvr a few weekly one-hour drama shows and play them back when we have time to settle down for a spell. Frequently we don’t get settled down until some time after 8, which helps explain why we’re running about two months late right now. To fill until we reached playback time, we sometimes turned on Olbermann and gave him such attention as we could. He may have been over the top at times, but he didn’t recommend killing people, and a lot of what seemed most outrageous struck me as tongue-in-cheek.
    .
I give him credit for caring about people. It couldn’t have been all showboating. I also think he liked to think of himself as intellectually honest, although I don’t believe he managed it consistently. Still, if you took him with a large lump of salt, you could learn something from him without turning into a wacko.
    .
MSNBC will never find anyone to match his ratings unless they try to out-Fox Fox and hire Beck or O’Reilly – and what are the odds on that? (Well, okay, they could move Maddow to 8:00, but that’s just digging one hole to file another.) I suppose we’ll get the whole story soon enough. It’ll probably be almost as interesting as one of Keith’s shows.
    .
Executive summary: On balance, I’ll mist him.

Look at the massive false equivocation you’re attempting to pull: Piven as Lenin? You are a joke. You probably believe Beck too. Stupid is as you post.

  • 53_3

    .
Put ‘em back in your pants…

  • 53_3

    No, au contraire.
    .
    I spelled it correctly…

  • pintortwo

That’s true paulejb. The size of News Corp and it’s holdings is immense. Newspapers / magazines, cable, internet, radio… Along with FOX, they’ve got the Wall St Journal, Dow Jones, Marketwatch, SmartMoney, Barron’s.. Holdings in the US, Europe, Latin Am.. Plus 1$ million donations to the Republican Governors Association and the US Chamber of Commerce.. It’s very impressive.
    .
Even if MSNBC and FOX were equal as far as broadcasting biased, advocacy-based news, there still would be no comparing the the two. In fact, if all other US news companies were like Fox, but on the left, Fox’s influence and distribution might still slant MSM to the right.

  • freeinpa

    “false equivocation and false equivalency”
    .
This must be the new watchword that is spreading like wildfire through liberal luncacy. I havce seen these words used about a dozen times in the past 2 days. The left continually tries to foist the (untrue) meme that conservatives only use talking points passed from on high. Just reading the left hear using the exact same words prove they don’t possess a single coherent independent thought.
    .
You have to love the whining about Olbermann being fired/leaving MSNBC. Joe Klein has a soft spot for a foul-mouthed bile spilling loon who continually spreads lies and hate about anything remotely conservative. In fairness to JK there are so few people who actually read or listen to either of them I guess they need to stick together.
    .
For those whining about how Comcast doesn’t want a progressive voice well I think Comcast is int he business of making money and the bottom line (no pun intended) is nobody wants to here progressive drivel. Coincidentally Keith goes belly up on th e anniversary of Air America crashing and burning, another liberal failure.
    .

And Ivy you quote below raises two points: 1) It shows how little in fact liberals do know about the basis of their illogical beliefs and 2) all liberal “thinkers” are minor figures hence their audiences can meet in phone booths and still have room for snacks.

I had never heard of Frances Fox Piven until I read that Glenn Beck had made her an enemy of the people. It is funny to take such minor figures and blow them up out of all proportion to their importance.

  • diecash1

Just reading the left hear using the exact same words prove they don’t possess a single coherent independent thought

The only thing that your statement “proves” is that you’re unfamiliar with the process of proving anything. Perhaps if those on the right didn’t falsely conflate just about any and everything, they wouldn’t see the words “false equivocation” so frequently.

    53_3,

The size of Olbermann’s audience didn’t save him. And audience size makes a great deal of difference. It indicates where the mind of the public is at. It certainly is not at MSNBC.

  • freeinpa

The subject was “minor figures,” diecash. Do you deny that Lenin was a minor figure until he was shipped back to Russia in 1917 by the Germans who had their own motives, which I am sure they lived to regret.

  • paulejb

    pintortwo,

Strangely enough, the appearance of FOX NEWS on the scene did not serve to keep the rest of the media honest. It simply made them drop any pretense of objectivity. What was once subliminal liberal bias became in your face liberal bias. There can be no doubt the the MSM totally neglected their responsibility to vet Barack Obama in the two years leading up to the election. In fact, they merely became cheer leaders for the Obama campaign.

Now we are all suffering from the consequences of Barack Obama not being up to the job and the liberal media has lost what little credibility that they had.

  • paulejb

    diecash,

How can you forget the term “gravitas” running through the liberal media as if they had all become clones.

The latest term is “civility.” If we have heard it once we have heard it a million times coming from the chattering class.

  • paulejb

    freeinpa,

Actually, Piven’s plan to overload the social welfare system so it would collapse ushering in a new age of socialism was kind of imaginative. It was evil, but ingenious.

P.S. I would venture a guess that you are even more “freeinpa” since the November elections. Mazeltov.

  • noland1967

What an absolutely mature and kind thing to say Joe. Even with disagreement, you can still find something nice to say about a colleague. Cheers to you!

Keith will be sorely missed even if it is, hopefully, temporary.

  • paulejb

    53_3,

In what alternate universe is “pantheon” spelled “panteon?”

  • pintortwo

Actually, what the appearance of FOX did to the rest of US media, with their aggressive charges of “liberal bias”, was increase the “equivalency seeking” aspect of news I mentioned earlier. News sources became afraid to challenge anything that came from a conservative, or question military policy, or policy that benefited industry for fear that they would be called “liberal” –by individuals that didn’t even hide their conservative bias.
    .
This was by design. The term “liberal media” was a ploy by conservatives to be used as conservative (corporatist) shows began to dominate the airwaves. It was a preemptive strike against any that might challenge the right-dominated media.
    .
As former RNC Chair Rich Bond told the Washington Post, it’s a calculated effort:
    .
“There is some strategy to it (bashing the ‘liberal’ media). If you watch any great coach, what they try to do is ‘work the refs.’ Maybe the ref will cut you a little slack on the next one.”
    .
..or as Bill Kristol told the New Yorker in ’95:
    .
“I admit it — the liberal media were never that powerful, and the whole thing was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures”
    .
    ———
    .
Your charge that the media failed to vet Obama is disturbingly false. The has never been a politician for the Presidency that has been “vetted” more than Obama.. which is unsurprising as the media was afraid of someone they perceived to be a liberal– one that might challenge the oligarchy through progressive taxation, green jobs programs, banking regulation and ending the wars (..turns out they didn’t have to worry).
    .
McCain was able to not answer questions about being on the board of John Singlaub’s company when he was found guilty of selling arms to Iran- but Obama pals around w terrorists.. In fact, the media never mentioned that president of the group that hired Ayres and Obama to work on public schooling was a major contributor to McCain’s campaign and shown on his website (its ok to hire a “terrorist” if you’re a Republican). Never talked about McCain in the Keating 5, Palin addressing the AIP (a successionist group who’s founder called the US flag a “rag” and suggested Alaskans take arms against the US).. but they did read and discuss Michelle O’s college papers… what a crock.

  • Paul-no not that one

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

I hadn’t been watching KO much these days, so I was shocked when I turned him on last night and heard his fair wells.
    .
One point of fact I’d like to mention which addresses the “audiences” of KO and Beck. KO reminded viewers last night that they’ve (the viewers of his program) had raised over $2 Million for free health clinics. I’ve never heard of Beck or Hannity or anybody over at FOX even caring enough about their fellow man to motivate their viewers to do such a thing. And KO didn’t ask for the donations, he just did a story about free health clinics and the money started rolling in. FOX viewers wouldn’t donate to such causes even if they were asked, which they wouldn’t be. All Beck is interested in is selling gold and those dumb apocalyptic kits.

  • paulejb

    pintortwo,

1.It is not even a question any longer about the mainstream media’s liberal bias. Even the denials from the liberal media have become perfunctory.

    2. As for the vetting of Obama. George Stephanopoulos asked him a question about the Rev Wright and the rest of the left wing media was ready to castrate him. The liberal media ignored Rev Wright and Bill Ayers until it became impossible to ignore the stories. Then they gave the stories short shrift.

    3. Talk about false equivalency. Comparing a patriot like Singlaub to a domestic terrorist bomber like Ayers has to be the case that proves the rule.

    4. As for McCain contributors who hired Ayers and Obama, as Lenin said, “useful idiots” are with us always.

  • paulejb

    erieangel,

Perhaps you might want to look past your stereotypes and learn that Sean Hannity has raised millions to educate the children of fallen warriors.

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

Hannity begged and pleaded and cajoled his viewers for those millions. All Olberman had to do was highlight the fact that there is an organization in the US called The National Association of Free Health Clinics. The organization sponsors health clinics across the country, most of the health professionals are volunteers and they willingly travel the country in order to bring access of health care to those who have none. And the next day, thousands of emails were in Olberman’s box wanting to know how they might donate to such a cause–Olberman didn’t have to ask.
    .
Also, I thought the children of fallen warriors were eligible for educational aid from the VA, which would make Hannity’s project a redundancy. But nobody can deny there have been hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people without access to health care. In this country (the greatest country on earth) I see that as a failing of all of us. Republicans will say that people can always go to the emergency room because of a law that states that anybody who enters must be treated, but some refuse because most hospitals will still bill after providing the treatment, expect payment and report any unpaid bills to credit reporting agencies. Hence, some don’t go the expensive emergency room because they don’t want to see their already tenuous credit rating damaged from a hospital bill they can not pay.

He had his own network, NBC, where he reigned supreme. But then someone else bought it and he was out on his can.

Keth is very active on Facebook and other sites like HuffPo and Kos, so not a bad idea. He was pretty critical of Obama at times, a perspective that the Dems need to hear.

The hilarious Beck. Listen to the audio.
    .
Beck: I’ve been sitting here for the last few minutes trying to come up with a list of people I’d like to wack over the head with a shovel.

VO: And now “People We’d like to Beat to Death with a Shovel”.

Beck: Charlie Rangel. (Clang!) See, I feel better already. There is a time for everything, for every season there is a purpose. And today, the season is, Clubbing people over the head with Shovels

If you aren’t happy with Obermann’s 1.1 million to Lumberger’s 1.7 million, then maybe you shouldn’t own a TV network. I would think an audience of that size would at least allow you to make enough dollars to not have to eat at Mickey D’s.

The problem is also that NBC owns a bunch of other cable channels so that means that while others could use the viewers, the real cast of “independent” channels is very small. Plus you don’t have FAUX throwing out Republican lies as a corporate position.

Beck’s essential sin is a matter of proportionality. He has, as ever, latched onto an obscurity, blown it out of proportion…and turned it into a lie. He is an extraordinary liar, on matters large and small, as I’ve learned from personal experience with the man.

Joe, you do realize that it’s not just Beck (and Kristol, Krauthammer, and Wehner), right? The “Death Panels”, “the [alternately] government/socialist takeover of health care”, “the explosion of the size of government under Obama”, “runaway spending under Obama”, “Obama is [alternately] a liberal/Socialist”, “the wasted stimulus”, “Obama has added [insert your own made-up multi-trillion-dollar number here] to the deficit”…I could go on…like, forever.
    .
The Republican Party is an entire party of professional liars, leading a pack of heavily-armed, angry lunatics (read the comments, Joe). These people have been driven to functional, sputtering insanity by a long-running campaign of ever-crazier big lies with practically no serious grownups in the public media to call them on it. Well, until recently, no one on the teevee but Keith Olbermann. Do your job Joe, tell the public the truth about the entire Republican Party has become, before it’s too late.

When one side breaks the social contract, and the other side makes a virtue of never calling them out on it, the liar always wins. When it becomes “uncivil” to call out liars, lying becomes free.

Olbermann was such an @ss that one could not even stomach him as a second rate sports reporter.

NewsBusters| Joe Klein: ‘Olbermann is a Brilliant Writer…I Always Enjoy Watching Him Even When He’s Occasionally Wrong’
    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/01/24/joe-klein-olbermann-brilliant-writeri-always-enjoy-watching-him-even-

JOE KLEIN MUST BE JUST AS CLUELESS AS KEITH OLBERMANN BECAUSE OLBERMANN WAS WRONG A LOT, AND PURPOSELY CHOSE NOT TO CORRECT HIS MISTAKES/LIES.
