Holbrooke’s Last Words

“You’ve got to stop this war in Afghanistan.”

Spoken to a Pakistani surgeon who was sedating him before surgery.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

    RIP Mr. Holbrooke.
    .
    Mr President, are you listening?

  • rdw56

Oh pleeeeease, I’m sure that Pakastani Dox is as honest as the day as long but you really are not going to start with,”Do it for Richard” nonsense are you?

I am sure Mr Holbrooke was a great and brilliant man beloved by al he touched. A national figure he is not. He as an assistant in the State Dept and an investment banker who ;ast was a director for AIG when they were engaging in risky investments that were to collapse the economy. Joe Klein will pretend that never happened and fine, no need to trash him. But this guy is not getting a state funeral.

We should appreciate his many years of service to his country.

    RIP Mr. Holbrooke

Not a national figure? Interesting take on man that was leading figure on the national and international stage since he was 24.

  • hippooath

    RDW,
    .
lets trash the guy because he didn’t give you the answer you wanted?
    .
    Classic rightie
    .
You won’t hear me say a word about Cheney when he dies. Hate is for the weak.

  • pintortwo

At least RDW admits that risky investments by US banks collapsed the economy.

  • jlbrumb

What does the surgeon being Pakistani have to do with his?

  • rdw56

I didn’t trash Holbrooke, I trashed you and the rest of the hype machine. He was a 2nd tier diplomat who spent large parts of his career as an investment banker in the private sector and if a conservative with the identical bio died yesterday he would not be Ambassador Holbrooke but AIG Director Holbrooke. It’s just fun pointing this hypocrisy out. It’s fine, It’s harmless. You have so few heroes you are doing the best you can with what you have. Aside from the beltway crowd no one knows who he was and they certainly are not aware of any diplomatic success in af-pac. Unless you want to call getting banished from the Presidential palace a success.

For 8 years you tried to bash Bush as anti-muslim. Time Mag, as with most other MSM outlets, cooperated with the notion conservatives are anti-muslim and just all-around equal opportunity bigots. You were in the moment as you always are. You could have pointed out the many things the USA has done to defend islam and muslms as we did in Kosovo. But you choose not too. Better not to defend American values and accomplishments with a Conservative in the WH. That would just feed thir narrative of American exceptionalism. Having ignored the example of Dayton for 8 years do you really think Americans are going to remember it as anything special? Remember it at all? It’s a historical footnote.

You can’t be serious comparing Holbrooke with Cheney. You do remember making the point he actually ran the country right? Well now you can live with that. Compare the man who ran America for 8 of the last 10 years with the man who spent 8 of the last 10 years on Wall Street. Really?

  • deconstructiva

    RIP Amb. Holbrooke.

  • deconstructiva

    I didn’t trash Holbrooke…
    .
    He was a 2nd tier diplomat…
    .
    You just did. ‘Nuff said.

  • rdw56

He was a national in the sense of a John Bolton. He had some influence in some areas of diplomacy. Each of them were limited in their influence within their respective parties. If you walked down any main street in America most people if they knew the name would have him confused with Hal Holbrooke.

He wasn’t a bad guy. He was very successful, certainly very, very wealthy. This hype is absurd. If it makes his family fell better that’s fine. Just as history it’s hype. He was on the lips of everyone in the MSM as the next Sec of State. That’s how far he got. How many Sec of State runner ups do we remember? None. That doesn’t make him a bad guy or a failure by any means. Joe Klein obviously knew how bad it was and gave his heart felt condolences before his passed. Good for Joe. Nothing wrong there. Just don’t pretend you’ve been the model of objectivity. That’s an insult to sane people. THe reason so many MSM figures go to work for liberal candidates or democrat party entities is because that’s their home. It’s where their mind is. Joe hates Fox and talk radio because they shattered those silly pretenses. Joe is the classic elitist.

    Good, CONCISE point!

  • rdw56

Oh I don’t know. Maybe, and this is a longshot, but just maybe he doesn’t like the idea of Obama ordering a dozen or so drone wolfpack attacks in Pakistan each night. Just a guess but a Pakistini Doc operating on Holbrooke in Pakistan probably lives in Pakistan. Maybe, and this is just a maybe, living in Pakistan he doesn’t much like the idea of explosives dropping out of the sky.

    Just a guess.

  • rdw56

2nd tier isn’t a shot. Top tier would be secretary of state. Clinton, Albright, Cristopher, Rice, Powell, Baker. 2nd tier would be be Bolton, Holbrooke, Mitchell. etc. I haven’t taken a shot at Holbrooke in any way. He was a very successful, very wealthy man.

Talk about taking a meatcleaver to logic. Precious that you would say that I/we are not models of objectivity but you’re somehow the reasonable one.
    .
Point out one time. Just one – where I for exampe wrote that Bush was anti-muslim. One.
    .
Do you know what’s classic elitist – yours. Wrapping yourself in sanity, patriotism and the flag like a pancake wrapped sausage.
    .
Personally I don’t hate anything, including Fox. But fox don’t shatter pretenses, it gives people like you all the pretenses in the world to think the stupid sh!t you do.

rdw56: Did you forget the Dayton accords?

  • rdw56

I have no idea what you said nor is it a factor. Liberals are constantly trying to sell themselves as the friends of diversity and conservatives as haters. That was the program under Bush. Remember Obama going to Cairo to push the reset button? Liberals were going to restore American stature or some nonsense. The irony of that is in bashing Bush you diminished ALL US efforts to assist the muslim world including Holbrookes efforts in Kosovo. Thar’s 8 years the MSM had a ban on putting the USA in a positive light regarding Islam. If you walked down any street in the USA and asked 10 people about the Dayton accords 9.5 of them would have no ideas what you are talking about. That’s called poetic justice.
