Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

Schumer: “Bernie, helluva job today. You rock. Now get up… ….get up… …c’mon, so you’re wiped out, get up already. You’re the only one who can keep this goddam fight going, we sure as hell can’t do it….”

Seeing his liberal agenda minimized and for the most part, rejected, Schumer shuffles away from the press conference, morose and crestfallen. “what in the heck just happened”? he mumbles to himself.

Flash forward to Monday: Schumer and other Senate D’s gather outside the Chamber for the tax cut vote. The House D’s are in revolt, the peasants (aka the liberal base) are royally p1ssed off, and Sanders had to go and shoot his mouth off Friday (yay!). Their strategy of tossing Clinton, Obama, and other shiny objects at the MSM appears to have worked. Except for Olbermann and Maddow, not many other media types noticed the Friday Filibuster. The Senate D’s hope that angry bloggers aside, no one else in the media remembers that filibuster.

Americans know intrinsically that this Trickle Down tax scheme engineered by Bush Republicans in 2001, did NOT create shared prosperity. It is a categorical failure that blew up the Clinton surplus.

That is why opposition to it’s continuation is so high, and why Obama is stupid to not be seizing the high ground which Sanders so clearly did yesterday.

“It is a categorical failure that blew up the Clinton surplus.”

    .
If only what you said was the truth, perhaps you could have an argument with this thinking. But, the entire problem is that trickle down did work for over 25 years. Ending in the time of Clinton’s years with a surplus as a direct result of a major cut in spending programs enacted by a Republican held House and Senate.
    .
If liberals couldn’t change history to fit their own needs, what else would you all do in life? Sell used cars?
    .
9/11 and 2 wars ate up the vast majority of your so-called “Clinton surpluses”. Massive spending to stave off a total collapse of the economy in 2008 added more debt to our own quickly rising deficits. But, 2 years into what has been called the end of a recession has compounded the debt and deficit, why is that?
    .
Oh yea, uncontrolled spending by liberals who control both houses in Congress and a spend like a drunken sailor President. Imagine that!!

    .
The cornerstone of Schumer’s bill, according to his press release, is “a suitability standard for borrowers” so that mortgage providers “will never issue a loan that the borrower cannot afford.” With this bill’s promotion of the paternalistic concept of “suitability,” Schumer and fellow Democratic senators Bob Casey and Sherrod Brown of Ohio go beyond the widely shared-goals of improving disclosure of the terms of subprime and other new types of home loans. Rather, the bill bans banks and other mortgage lenders from issuing loans that the government deems as “unsuitable” and beyond borrowers’ means. This must be done, Schumer says, to protect the “large number of financially unsophisticated borrowers.”

Just how the federal government, which most of the time spends and borrows its own funds with less judgment and maturity than the average four-year-old, can determine which loans are “suitable” for adults in the private sector, the bill does not say.
