An Appreciation

Our colleague David Von Drehle pens a tribute to Elizabeth Edwards, who died of cancer today at 61. It’s worth a read.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

Unlike Mr. Von Drehle, I have never thought of Elizabeth Edwards as a wreck. Ambitious, yes. Defensive, yes. But, her basic character was brave, smart, and nurturing. She was no 3rd way tool. Her beliefs, whether supporting single payer or marriage equality for gays, supplied a real populist voice.
May her children remember her with love and joy.

I agree apr, wreck was not a thought I had on her passing. Dignified, inspiring, classy, gutsy. Wreck, no. He must have been thinking of her husband. As tributes go, this one is not memorable. RIP to a very high class lady.

Mrs. Edwards was a classy lady. How sad that her final years were saddened by her husband’s infidelity. How in the world could he have been so callous? I am also one of those who could not understand his appeal. Sometimes gut feelings are on target. Sadly, her children will also have to endure their father’s indiscretion. May she rest in peace.

Infifelity happens, I understand that. But for him to stoop even lower and attempt to pin the blame on somebody else…for MONEY…well, that’s pond scum for ya.

I was hoping there was something on Elizabeth Edwards here on Swampland. My schedule is pretty busy but this was a topic worth commenting about.

She was a brave, strong woman who should be commended for her ability to put her family first, inspite of the pain and agony caused her by her husband.
She put her family first by trying to make sure that her children had a good relationship with their father despite his infidelity. She did what most women would have done, join the cry for Edwards head and tear his strumpet Rielle Hunter to shreds.

She had lost a son and then got breast cancer. She handled these personal problems with great dignity and comported herself in a manner that truly should inspire women all over the world.

Elizabeth is reputed to have been an excellent lawyer, some even say she was better than her husband who was a known fantastic legal advocate. Yet, when it mattered, she made the choice to focus on what mattered the most, family.

I am sad that she died without having a chance to see her little ones mature. But, I pray that she infused them with so much love that they will not be to negatively impacted by her loss.

R.I.P Ms. Edwards. Your legacy will live for a long long time!
