The Palin Situation

It involves large condoms.

This video just includes so much in such a short amount of time. Is there any cultural artifact from 2010 that more perfectly captures the state of our nation? Put this in the history books, play it on the exploratory satellites, carve it in our corn fields.

To quote Hamlet, “For any thing so o’erdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold as ’twere the mirror up to nature: to show virtue her feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.”

Let us rejoice.

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

Never ever post a video that includes The Situation and a Palin.
You have polluted the site. I did not open the video in hopes of containing its essence. Ick!!
I have purposefully never watched that Jersey show and avoid anything that exploits Palin’s children.
There is a limit on how much our society can be debased by sleaze.

I know sacredh has taken some time off from posting but we need his unique perspective on this.

  • formerlyjames

I haven’t pushed the watch button and have no idea what this is about beyond something about Palin and large condoms. But I wonder how others know, intuitively? Whatever, I don’t think I would be interested in it.

  • afguy

Consider yourself lucky. I stopped on that show a couple of times to see what it was about and am pretty sure I lost IQ points by doing so.

  • earljr1

Just how narrow minded and mean spirited can one person be, april? The message is about using common sense and good judgment, yet you call it sleaze. I know, april, your definition of birth control is aborting the fetus, should pregnancy occur. Many of us think there are better alternatives and if, for once, you would open your mind, you just MIGHT learn something.

It’s the P word that’s sets her off Earl.

    Moving on:

“In a traditional democracy, the liberal class functions as a safety valve. It makes piecemeal and incremental reform possible. It offers hope for change and proposes gradual steps toward greater equality. It endows the state and the mechanisms of power with virtue. It also serves as an attack dog that discredits radical social movements, making the liberal class a useful component within the power elite.

But the assault by the corporate state on the democratic state has claimed the liberal class as one of its victims. Corporate power forgot that the liberal class, when it functions, gives legitimacy to the power elite. And reducing the liberal class to courtiers or mandarins, who have nothing to offer but empty rhetoric, shuts off this safety valve and forces discontent to find other outlets that often end in violence. The inability of the liberal class to acknowledge that corporations have wrested power from the hands of citizens, that the Constitution and its guarantees of personal liberty have become irrelevant, and that the phrase consent of the governed is meaningless, has left it speaking and acting in ways that no longer correspond to reality. It has lent its voice to hollow acts of political theater, and the pretense that democratic debate and choice continue to exist.”

ok, so the objections of earl and 2rocks caused me to watch. Pffffttt. Nothing especially shocking or enlightening. Just right wing religious anti-sex pitch. I thought “The Situation” was some teevee series. Turns out to be about Sarah’s “situation” and her admonition to other teens to avoid it (yeah, right).

  • formerlyjames

Speaking of hijacking a thread, and I have no problem with that, let’s not forget that German democracy was hijacked by the right wing. Lest we forget.

  • formerlyjames

oh, message to Sarah, if a “situation” ever occurs again, (highly unlikely it won’t and hasn’t) please don’t be so quick to dismiss them condoms. Only the most cynical anti-religious, liberal fanatics (like me) would call you a mindless hypocrite for doing so.

  • kevin

Only Earl Jr. would think you could be “enlightened” by watching a discussion between a mouthbreathing Jersey Shore castmember and teen pregnancy spokesmodel Bristol Palin.
    .
But I guess if you watch Fox News all day, “Dancing with the Stars” must seem like the Algonquin Roundtable.

Let me guess — did Beck get the vapors about the out-of-context quote that all the other right-wingers have been dry humping for a year now?

I’m not sure what’s worse — if they’re all too dumb to realize what they’re peddling isn’t true, or if they’re smart enough to know their mouthbreathing viewers are dumb enough to believe it.

  • formerlyjames

Stupid me. Watching Dancing with the Stars, I realize it is Bristol, not Sarah I mean to address, although no doubt Sarah stomps about in the mind of Bristol. Same difference.

Thanks, folks, for the great comments. I haven’t laughed so hard since I read the reviews of the Bush book!

Now I’m going to watch the clip to see if it contains any redeemable content to see what sets off earl’s and 2thirds’s ire at you all – this time.

BTW, you too can vote for Bristol over & over & over! Click here to find out how:

To quote another blog: “Thank God Bristol is the only Palin people can vote for – now.”

OK, I watched it. If I were a girl, one look at “The Situation” would be enough to swear me off sex for a good long time. Abstinence Only, meet thy maker!

earljr: Why do you make so many nasty assumptions about me. I was raised Catholic and believe abortion should only be used in rare situations. I know the masculine dominated church hierarchy would not agree but their moral authority is limited.
Also, I would not want any child of mine to take advice from either Bristol Palin or “The Situation”. They are not my idea of role models.
By the way I have had 2 children, used birth control for 9 years and my ex had a vasectomy. I consider that responsible behavior.
How many children have you had? I am sure you procreated as much as possible.

I feel sorry for the Palin kids. Sarah has exploited them and put them a position to be degraded.
I have never known a candidate past or future to do that to his/her children. Most politicians go out of their way to keep their kids from public scrutiny. Not the Wasilla 1/2 governor. I think it is a demonstration of her lack of class and certainly, as a mama grizzly, she is not protecting them.

Hahahahaha. I’m not laughing at your lack of a life and the irony of you accusing others of that exact violation. I’m laughing at the fact that other people want to play and listen to Pat Benatar. That has to be a joke right?

  • http://moderatemainer.wordpress.com moderatemainer

Unfortunately James, many forget. I have seen people on here genuinely argue that Hitler and fascism are extreme liberal ideologies. It is a ridiculousness that needs to be continually corrected. History can quickly be distorted if educated people aren’t continually assessing and referencing it.

  • liberalmeltdown

April, it’s people like YOU that brought the Palin family and particularly the children into the spotlight with your nasty comments and continual lies. So, now you get payback. Enjoy.
