Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

I claimed it, P-Luk definitely was banned (or at least claimed it), and Cincy was banned multiple times, each time coming back with a different name referencing liberal champions of the Roman Republic. Or so I hear.

That was actually a good one.

I agree that P_Luk was banned for a while, then he was allowed back. Toward the middle of the primary season, he was such a fervent Hillary supporter, he moved to a site that was full of like minded folks. Most here were Obama supporters.

@Paul-nnto: Please help me out. What did cinci do that got him banned? I remember enjoying his rants, but I don’t recall him being any worse than the current lot…

@anon76: I’d concur that P_Luk was banned. (Tho’ I especially enjoyed his tête à tête with John Edward’s spokesperson, Mudcat Whatshisname. Pure. Gold.)
    .
@Ivy_B: I thought that the Rusty > Rustyreturns name change was due to the “Great Server Meltdown of 2007″. Not that this ever kept him or his sockpuppets from posting on Swampland for any amount of time….

Cinci kept up a constant barrage of antagonizing ridicule against KT for her posts on her brother’s cancer. Not sure if that was what led to his banishment or not, though.

Cinci was banned, and showed the e-mail he received from TIME/Swampland, for incessantly repeating John McCain’s rape “joke”.

From a NY Times article today (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/world/middleeast/14mideast.html?_r=1&hp):
    .
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has agreed to push his cabinet to freeze most construction on settlements in the West Bank for 90 days to break an impasse in peace negotiations with the Palestinians…
    .
In return, the Obama administration has offered Israel a package of security incentives and fighter jets worth $3 billion
    .
The United States would also block any moves in the United Nations Security Council that would try to shape a final peace agreement…
    .
The partial freeze would not include East Jerusalem…
    .
If approved, the agreement could surmount a stubborn hurdle to talks between Israel and the Palestinians…
    .
It would also give President Obama a foreign policy victory after the Democrats’ midterm election losses and a tough few days for him in Asia…
    .
This proposed 90-day freeze would be nonrenewable: the United States would not ask for further extensions…
    .
Conventional wisdom run wildly amok. How could this unbelievably superficial proposal in any way bring about an opportunity for compromise between Israel/Palestine that has not been already been brought about and undermined in the past? How can this possibly be framed as a foreign-policy victory?
