40 Under 40

For the first time, TIME has assembled a roster of this year’s rising political stars–40 candidates, strategists, leaders and office-holders under 40 years of age. You can check out the list, which includes micro-profiles and honoree interviews, here. Best choice? Worst choice? Who’d we miss?

(Bonus: Time.com has also put together a gallery of the Top 10 American Political Prodigies of all time, from Thomas Jefferson to a current West Wing leader. Though perhaps not the one you’d expect.)

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of  a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty number two), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay marriage advocates—as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

A “few” locals complain about Ellie Hill’s army of bums in Missoula, MT? I think you need to ask more locals than Ms. Hill and her friends.

You missed Alvin Greene, (D) South Carolina. The weirdest Senate Candidate since Jimmy Carter won the Presidential election.
    .
See Alvin in this video – news release where he was at the State Fair, and was making faces and putting his fingers on the head of the reporter to make rabbit ears.
    .
I love it when Democrats pick the winners like this. Give me a ex-Witch any day of the week over this clown.

I wonder if Alvin Greene’s debate will be nationally televised like Christine Odonnell’s was. Somehow I doubt it.

How often NewRusty have you seen a defense of Alvin Greene on this site? Yet the rw knee jerk defense is ever in play when their dim bulb candidates surface.

Alvin Greene is as brainless as many of the republican candidates this cycle. What is it with America lately? Is being dumb suddenly a requirement to being in office? If so, then maybe I should run because I don’t know much either and couldn’t debate the issues if my life depended upon it.

    erieangel,

If you run as a Teapublican, your lack of debating skills wouldn’t matter. Your Repub masters will take over your campaign for you, schedule all your media appearances on Fox news & rightwing radio, and block all attempts by real news outlets to ask you a valid question. Meantime they’ll funnel a million bucks into your campaign account, tape a dozen hit piece videos and radio spots, and run them around the clock with “buys” financed by Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and the Chamber of Commerce.
If you get sucked into a debate, they’ll tatoo a list of talking points on your hand and rehearse you over & over until you repeat them over & over, no matter what the debate question is.

If you can live with that, go for it… but you’ll be joining the ranks of the ignorant Teapublicans already on the ballots.

We all watch Elli Boldman Hill. We watched her when she was asked to leave multiple government jobs in Boise. We all watched her when she compromised a campaign with “The Boldman Papers.” We all watched her extravagent wedding and divorce. Its a new town, and a new last name, but the same Ellie Boldman.
