–California nears a budget deal.

–Paul Krugman considers classical economists.–Cryptic (and totally unconfirmed) signs indicate a super computer virus may have come from the Israel.

–Vegetables: Ryan Lizza’s exhaustive cap-and-trade autopsy.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

“The bulk of the money is being spent by conservatives, who have swamped their Democratic-aligned competition by 7 to 1 in recent weeks. The wave of spending is made possible in part by a series of Supreme Court rulings unleashing the ability of corporations and interest groups to spend money on politics. Conservative operatives also say they are riding the support of donors upset with Democratic policies they perceive as anti-business.[...]

And so it begins, daily there are companies and insurance companies dropping coverage as a result of ObamaCare- our country saving fix. It seems the liberals plan is to give coverage to the young to collect more taxes, then deny treatment to the elderly to save money. That’s how liberals count on HC to reduce the deficit. How ingenious!

Last year, I ordered a CT scan of the chest on a 63-year-old patient whose chest X-ray had revealed a lung nodule. I had no problem getting the test approved by his private insurance company. The radiologist suggested that I repeat the CT scan this year to make sure the nodule hasn’t turned into cancer.

But this year, the same insurance company is denying the test, having clamped down on several elective services while also raising its premiums. This company now has to cover children with pre-existing conditions and can place no lifetime limits on care. It is struggling to preserve its profits as Obamacare kicks in — profits that, to begin with, are only approximately 4 percent of its total revenue.

Blue Cross CEO Brad Wilson is scheduled to unveil the move at a news conference in Raleigh with Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

They’ll also announce that Blue Cross will raise rates for individual policies next year slightly less than previously planned, under an agreement with the state Insurance Department. Frank Rich on the benefits of having a Christine O’Donnell representing your party.

“But surely the larger motive for his retreat was the dawning recognition of just how valuable O’Donnell is to the G.O.P.’s national aspirations in November — even should she ultimately lose her own race in blue Delaware. Whatever her other talents, she’s more than willing to play the role of useful idiot for her party. She gives populist cover to the billionaires and corporate interests that have been steadily annexing the Tea Party movement and busily plotting to cash in their chips if the G.O.P. prevails.

While O’Donnell’s résumé has proved largely fictional, one crucial biographical plotline is true: She has had trouble finding a job, holding on to a home and paying her taxes. In this, at least, she is like many Americans in the Great Recession, including the angry claque that found its voice in the Tea Party. For a G.O.P. that is even more in thrall to big money than the Democrats, she couldn’t be a more perfect decoy.

By latching on to O’Donnell’s growing presence, the Rove-Boehner-McConnell establishment can claim it represents struggling middle-class Tea Partiers rather than Wall Street potentates and corporate titans. O’Donnell’s value is the same as that other useful idiot, Michael Steele, who remains at the Republican National Committee only because he can wave the banner of “diversity” over a virtually all-white party that alternately demonizes African-Americans, Latinos, gays and Muslims.

O’Donnell is particularly needed now because most of the other Republican Tea Party standard-bearers lack genuine antigovernment or proletarian cred.”

And another edition of the liberals if you can’t beat them, smear them.

She introduced Allred yesterday by declaring that she was doing the “unthinkable” for “getting your client deported” not to mention the Social Security document Allred is using as evidence will get her “barbecued” if she takes it to court, moreover, Greta thinks that Allred is using this case to ’subvert the electoral process.’ It’s all “rotten,” says Susteren. And that was just the first minute of the interview. Perhaps needless to say, it went downhill from there.

Later, after Allred admited this case will never go to court, Greta responded “that’s just another horrible thing to do, why put it out in the press, why do this to her, why smear her, why even call her a liar.” Allred, whose response throughout is that Whitman denied knowledge of the S.S. document to the press so therefore must be lying, finally aggravates Greta enough that she declares Allred is essentially “blackmailing” Meg Whitman.

Eric Cantor: habitual liar or complete moron?

“It’s a rather classic example demonstrating the fact that Cantor simply has no idea what he’s talking about.

“We’ve got to stop this cycle of spending money we don’t have. This spending and debt we’ve incurred over the last two years has exceeded that which this country has incurred over the last 200.”

For the record, since President Obama took office, the U.S. has added $2.8 trillion to the national debt. That same debt was $10.6 trillion the day the president was sworn in. [...]

What’s more, it’s worth emphasizing that this is the same Cantor who helped Bush/Cheney add $5 trillion to the debt in just eight years, and is currently pushing to add another $4 trillion to the debt in the form of tax cuts for the wealthy.

And just for good measure, let’s also not forget that in August, it was none other than Cantor who said the debt didn’t matter nearly as much as economic growth anyway.”

“This interactive tracks campaign spending by interest groups and political parties in the 2010 midterm elections and will be updated every Tuesday through Election Day. This week’s table shows that one conservative interest group, American Crossroads, spent nearly as much on campaign ads last week as the Democrats’ House and Senate committees combined. The Republicans’ Senate committee made an aggressive move into West Virginia. And the National Association of Realtors becomes the first group on the top 10 to support candidates from both parties.

For the week ending September 26, groups spent a total of $15,495,362, with $10,620,174 on behalf of Republicans and $4,875,188 on behalf of Democrats. “

Half or more of the audiences for six media sources scored this high: the comedy news shows and major newspaper websites (54% in the high knowledge group), the NewsHour (53%), National Public Radio (51%) and Rush Limbaugh’s radio show (50%). Regular readers of news magazines were not far behind (48%).
By contrast, the regular audiences for many other sources scored no higher than the sample average. The audiences for morning news (34% high knowledge), local TV news (35%), Fox News Channel (35%), blogs (37%), and the network evening news (38%) were not significantly different from the norm for the whole sample (35%). Participation in the federal food-stamp program swelled from 26 million Americans in 2007 to more than 33 million last year, and it continues to surge. As of June, the latest figures available, more than 41.2 million people were receiving monthly assistance, which averaged $133.36 a person.

Similarly, the U.S. Agriculture Department’s supplemental nutrition grant program for women, infants and children, known as WIC, saw participation grow beyond 9.3 million last year, up from 8.7 million two years ago, government figures show.

If you approve of this video you are sick and need to check in to a facility to protect the rest of the rational public from your deranged sense of comedy.

“If Ed’s so insignificant how come YOU KEEP BRINGING HIM UP?????”
    .
Because he is the poster boy for what liberals truly believe and how they acted when left to their own devices: hate-filled loon.

Freepy, you don’t think we should be paying firefighters a salary, we should only pay them while they’re putting out a fire? Really?
    .
This was a Republican run county. This is how Republicans want to govern. This is the Republican philosophy in action. Don’t complain to me if the outcome isn’t to your liking.

  • freeinpa

The hypocrisy is the left decried the burning of the Koran as hate-filled and would anger terrorists (assuming they need help) while the other is just art expression (no hate here move along). Or its OK to hate Christians.
    .
“By the way, that artist is a hack who intentionally seeks this kind of controversy in order to get talked about and sell more paintings. Congrats on helping him out.”
    .
And the ones buying this hack will be the looney left. I also doubt that the left’s silence on this has anything to do with the artist not getting publicity.

  • m0mentom0ri

By 3x’s logic, Lady Gaga and Spongebob Squarepants are the most qualified people to run the country. Both of them are more popular and better know than anyone on Fox or MSNBC.

Exactly what our dear little grapecrush fails to disclose is that Cantor in the minority of Congress since 2006 was not responsible for the largest portion of the debt and spending.
    .
And what our mendacious little FreeDumbLog fails to mention is that:

In September and October, [Cantor], along with the Republican leadership, supported the $700 billion Treasury rescue plan, called the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

    http://www.propublica.org/article/bank-employing-gop-house-leaders-wife-got-bailout-bucks-090123
    .
So, when you want to blame Dems exclusively for what was probably the last bipartisan bill to get through Congress, we all know that you’re being a hyperpartisan liar.

Hard to believe now, but before President Bush signed the $700 billion rescue plan into law in October 2008, it passed the House by a 228-205 vote, with 91 Republicans in support, and the Senate by a 74-25 vote, with 32 Republicans. But you won’t hear much bragging. The loudest theme on the fall campaign trail is full-throated outrage at the depravity of the bailouts and those who voted for them.

The political fallout from TARP has gotten steadily worse. It has given rise to the Tea Party and contributed to the record number of incumbents defeated in primaries. Many more will go down in November. Yet the economic news about TARP has gotten consistently better. It will cost taxpayers a fraction of that $700 billion, and may end up costing them nothing at all.

    http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/09/tarp-the-forbidden-bipartisan-success/63803/

Its a failed philosophy globally– just you and Ed seem to think otherwise.

  • afguy

I’m amazed when the local TV station makes the national news.
    .
Was listening on the radio on the way to work this AM to a couple of personalities discussing this.
    .
Thye normally are pretty well conservative in the points they bring up but their take this morning was that there was just something “wrong” about what happened.
    .
The home owner in question (and a few of the others inthe same development) had not been paying these fees because they thought it was a duplication of services already provided.
    .
This weekend was very windy, especially Saturday. I’m waiting for the situation to arise in which a fire, in a dwelling owned an “unpaid” citizen, either spreads beyond their property causing damage to “client” property owners, or, in order to prevent further damage, they have to save the “uninsured” property as a preventive measure to others.
    .
I don’t see this ending here. I see SOMEONE having to make SOME sort of “face-saving” change to present policy because the moral “optics” of this, especially to the community in question, are just awful!

    Who Speaks for Most Americans?
    .
Americans more likely to see Republicans than Democrats representing their Views and Values.
    .
On the Role of Government, Parties’ Ratings Look Like 1994
    .
by Lydia Saad September 21, 2010
    .
PRINCETON, NJ — Americans’ opinions about how well the Democratic Party represents their views on the role of government have soured in recent years. The percentage saying the party is doing either very or moderately well on this has dropped from 57% in October 2006 to 44% today.
    .
Over the same period, the Republican Party’s image on the role of government has held fairly steady and, as a result, the GOP now leads on this dimension, similar to its position in October 1994.
    .
More specifically, according to the Aug. 27-30 USA Today/Gallup survey, fewer than half of Americans, 44%, now say the Democratic Party represents their views on the role of government either very or moderately well, while 54% say it does this not very or not at all well. Americans are more evenly divided in their views of the Republican Party in this arena, with 52% generally saying it is doing well and 47% not well.
    .
After the 1994 elections, which saw the Democrats lose majority control of Congress to the Republicans for the first time in nearly a half century, the Democrats went on to lead the Republicans on this measure in 1999, 2005, and 2006. The current reversal is yet another sign that a shake-up of the political balance in Washington may be looming.
    .
Republicans Also Lead for Representing Values
Americans’ perceptions of how well each party represents their values show a similar trend.
    .
Democrats have lost ground on this dimension in recent years while Republicans have maintained their ground or possibly gained a little ground, resulting in a distinct Republican advantage, 56% to 49%, again similar to the parties’ 1994 standing.

True. The Burlington Coat Factory Community Center, Mosques throughout the US, the Arizona laws requiring police to harass Latinos even at the expense of time otherwise dedicated to murder investigations. (The law would have let individuals sue if the police do not enforce immigration laws, but not murder, rape, organized crime, child molesters… So, intelligent police supervisors would have required police to drop everything for immigration enforcement to prevent being sued.)
    .
“They want to change this country.”
    .
Yes, you want to forbid unions and remove all care for the sick, the elderly and the poor (known as “entitlements”).
    .

  • grape_crush

Minor problem with, well logic is a stretch,. its not the children not getting the care it’s the elderly.
    .
Funny! Freeper thinks that insurance companies have separate pools for each demographic they serve.
    .
Anyway, what does this have to do with people not being able to choose their own doctor? You’re making an argument for private insurance’s beef with the ACA more than what problems a doctor or patient might have with it…
    .
…And insurance companies denied compensation for procedures and tests prior to the passage of the ACA, right? The ACA is just being used as a scapegoat, just like trial lawyers and medical care ‘overusers’ were before that bill passed.
    .
And the left’s “we don’t need no stinking profits” will be a sure path for insurance companies to became GM– bankrupt and essentially owned by the government.
    .
Because one of America’s biggest manufacturers is exactly like a health insurance company. Right.

My knowledge or modern art is as little as your knowledge of history, economics, math, science, political science, law and the constitution – aka none.
    .
Now, I know if I end up in London (unknown why or how I could end up in London anytime soon) not to go to see an art project (since the last and only time I went to anything artistic on my own was a few months ago to photo gallery with 1920s and 1930s photographs of my neighborhood – mostly because it is a four minute walk from my front door I am very unlikely to end up in any galleries anywhere) not to go to the gay sex Jesus exhibit.

    From Krugman in your link:
    .
“I mean that literally. As Politico recently pointed out, every major contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination who isn’t currently holding office and isn’t named Mitt Romney is now a paid contributor to Fox News. Now, media moguls have often promoted the careers and campaigns of politicians they believe will serve their interests. But directly cutting checks to political favorites takes it to a whole new level of blatancy.

Arguably, this shouldn’t be surprising. Modern American conservatism is, in large part, a movement shaped by billionaires and their bank accounts, and assured paychecks for the ideologically loyal are an important part of the system. Scientists willing to deny the existence of man-made climate change, economists willing to declare that tax cuts for the rich are essential to growth, strategic thinkers willing to provide rationales for wars of choice, lawyers willing to provide defenses of torture, all can count on support from a network of organizations that may seem independent on the surface but are largely financed by a handful of ultrawealthy families. ”
    .
Krugman followed the money and found billionaires writing big checks.
    .
This makes the Tea Party a little bit better than an outright fraud since it is not grass roots and not about helping the “little guy”.

“Revenues can drop for a couple of reasons but spending never dips.”
    .
In order to counteract a recession, the government needs to spend to get people working and spending again. So, spending should not dip, but, instead, increase when recessions occur.
    .
As for non-defense spending, these are almost all a part of the safety net to make sure that the old, the sick and the poor do not starve, also known as “mandatory expenditures”.
    .
Only somebody with the morality of dead cockroach would use a recession as an excuse to starve a wounded veteran, old poor people or working parents who can not earn enough to feed their children.
    .
Then again, dead cockroaches are your moral and intellectual superior Freakinpa.

Liberals have this quaint notion that the government is the all knowing market.
    .
    Hey! You’re lying again!
    .
…the object of any business, service, manufacturing, financial is to make a profit not re-distribute wealth.
    .
And you are saying that a company’s profit comes before any other consideration, Freeper.
    .
You should campaign on that; rally your fellow right-wingers with cries of “Corporate profits first! Move the jobs to China!”

“Why do liberals hate America and Americans?”
    .
You must have been watching a different video since this video is about people who love America – true liberals.
    .
“Yes especially if you want an efficient, solvent workplace.”
    .
“In fact, the most productive auto assembly plant in North America, according to The Harbour Report, is General Motors’ Oshawa (Canada) No. 1 plant, in which workers take just 15.85 hours to assemble a vehicle. The plant assembles the Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala, and is represented by the Canadian Auto Workers.

Six of the top 10 North American assembly plants are union shops, reports Roger Kerson, assistant director of public relations of United Auto Workers. Ford Motor Co.’s Atlanta assembly plant was ranked third on the list, at 16.58 assembly hours per vehicle; GM’s Oshawa (Canada) No. 2 plant was fourth, at 17.47 hours; and GM’s Lansing, Michigan, assembly plant was fifth, at 17.53. Nonetheless, Nissan’s Altima plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, a nonunion shop, is the most productive U.S. plant, with an average of 16.10 hours per vehicle.”
    .
    http://www.qualitydigest.com/feb06/news.shtml
    .
Wrong, union shops are consistently more efficient and productive.
    .
“…child molesters are another wing of the of the liberals special interest friends…”
    .
Sorry, freakinpa, you are not a friend of any liberal no matter how often you rape your daughter. Liberals have never supported anybody even vaguely similar to child molesters.
    .
“Still waiting for that list of laws that liberals want to enforce.”
    .
Every law on the books including ones which put child molesters like you in jail as well as members of the Bush Administration who violated international law.
    .
However, as a class C misdemeanor, equal to loitering, the punishment for illegal immigration is very small. Democrats do not oppose enforcing this law in terms of giving small fines.
    .
Loitering, as you know, is being annoying in a public place. It is a crime you are guilty of every time you leave your home. If you want life sentences for class C misdemeanors, your 5,000 counts of loitering would get you the electric chair.

An oxymoron. They hate everything this country represents, its laws and the freedom the peoiple try to express.
    .
Liberals hate Americans, their actions and want to control what they do, the money they have and how they spend spend it. Unions are more akin to the way of life of communism. just as Trumpka was advocating (in between whipping up hatred and violence) how the private companies should be controlled by the public. “Norman Rockwell? How positively Republican of you.”
    .
“In 1943, during the Second World War, Rockwell painted the Four Freedoms series, which was completed in seven months and resulted in his losing 15 pounds. The series was inspired by a speech by Franklin D. Roosevelt, in which he described four principles for universal rights: Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Worship, and Freedom from Fear. The paintings were published in 1943 by The Saturday Evening Post. The United States Department of the Treasury later promoted war bonds by exhibiting the originals in 16 cities. Rockwell himself considered “Freedom of Speech” to be the best of the four. ”
    .
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Rockwell#World_War_II
    .
“After he parted company with the magazine in 1963, Rockwell became more openly political, and the politics were not what people might have expected; indeed one of the many American artists who chronicled the breakup of Norman Rockwell’s idyllic mid-century America was Norman Rockwell. Rockwell’s 1960s pictures are images of tension and conflict. The Problem We All Live With (1963) has a little girl walking to a newly desegregated school with an escort of four US marshals. It adopts her scale, dwarfed by the huge legs of the marshals. On the wall behind is vile racist graffiti and the blood-red remains of a thrown tomato. Rockwell was accused by angry letter writers of “vicious lying propaganda… for the crime of racial integration”.”
    .
    http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/ARTrockwell.htm
    .
Sorry, Freakinpa, Normal Rockwell was a Democrat and, by today’s standards (by today’s standards Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower were liberals) Rockwell would be considered “left wing”.

No, I was tying to make you sound obsessively homophobic, but, the fact that you mistook it for a gay feeling proves my point.

    .
Also, just as I do not want people who protested against the Koran burning wingnut to go to jail, I do not want protesters against this Jesus gay sex thing to go to jail.
    .
Just as I do believe the Koran burning wingnut deserves police protection from violence, I believe this artist deserves protection from violence.
    .
Just as I believe that the people protesting the Koran burning wingnut should be protected by police from any violence, I believe any protesters against the Jesus gay sex guy should be protected from any violence.

“BEDFORD – In an action that has concerned some community members, Bedford High School officials recently gave graduation credits to students who took part in a “Day of Silence,” a national school-based observance for gay rights.

Students who participated in the April 16 event refrained from speaking for the entire day — a symbolic protest against anti-gay name-calling and bullying in schools. Bedford High School administrators decided to give Real World Learning hours — a requirement for graduation — to participating students.”

    “… dictating their profits…”
    .
Like you say ten times a day, cutting revenue does not cause deficits. Spending does. Apply that to the private sector. How about cutting the top paying jobs down to a reasonable wage to start with?
    .
    “.. and punishing the successful..”
    .
That makes no sense. An insurance company fails to deliver a good service for a reasonable price and that is “successful”?
    .
” ..and trying to pick winners…”
    .
The government doesn’t pick. The market picks. Blue Cross is a winner, and, like you, many other companies are loosers.
    .
“The job of the government is provide equal opportunity..”
    .
As in all get medical care so that they can prove themselves in the workforce, not be too ill to work or study.

    .
Nobody is seeking an equal outcome unless in your warped world the one and only reason people want money is to go to the doctor.
    .
Do you think that HCR involves giving away free Mercedes? Do you think that HCR gives away free second hand clunkers? Do you think HCR gives people anything they enjoy spending money on?

What’s next – the liar liar pants on fire defense?
    .
You tell me, Freeper. Not only does this have nothing to do with the One Nation rally, but the only person your link proves wrong is yourself:

Bob Jozokos, the school’s interim principal, said the event fell under Real World Learning’s “Democracy in Action” requirement, which can be satisfied by attending civic meetings or participating in other political events.[...]
    .
Jozokos said students did not know they would receive Real World Learning hours when they signed up for the event.
    .
“The reason is because students need to get those hours, and I was looking for kids that would want to participate in the activity and not just get those hours,” Jozokos said.[...]
    .
Jozokos said the decision to award hours for the event was not an endorsement of a specific political agenda; Jozokos said he would give hours to students who participate Tea Party events or other activities on the political spectrum.
    .
“I’m not looking at the value statement so much,” Jozokos said. “I’m looking to see if it falls under the idea of getting kids involved in democracy and speaking their mind and becoming part of the process that we value in this country.”

Well, we value this process. Freeper, not so much…
