The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Sliiiide to the left!

  • nflfoghorn

Mr. President, Don Cornelius on line 1….

  • nflfoghorn

Let’s see you do that at the bar mitzvah for Rahm’s son!

  • nflfoghorn

I just wanna know what music was playing when this photo was taken.

  • nflfoghorn

Somehow this is NOT what was meant by the phrase “push push in the bush.”

  • destor23

The President’s latest attempts to surmount the Bush Obstacles.

  • grape_crush

“Later in the day, the President discovered that the planter had been laced with poison ivy.”

  • nflfoghorn

    Ai to the yeeeeee. ;)

  • grape_crush

“This time, Obama chooses a narrower divide to bridge.”

  • nflfoghorn

White House staff then heard a distinctive “riiiiiiip.” No one had the audacity of hope to tell him.

  • nflfoghorn

A sudden, quite personal case of Jungle Fever gripped the president.

  • grape_crush

“Obama continues to straddle the center.”

Thanks to intrepid Michael Scherer’s earlier coverage on Russian spy ring…
    http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2010/06/29/the-8-coolest-things-about-the-alleged-russian-spy-ring/
…he’s trying to warn Obama about the Russian shrubberies / disguised spies he’s stepping over: beware of Russian shrubberies, they may be plants.

nflfoghorn: it’s “Jive Talkin’ “, (look at all the Centrists smiling and clapping). ; )

  • deconstructiva

…to answer music q., we need to know that this “reverse limbo” is a hazing exercise for the WH Press Corp™ – they step over fake ferns with razor-edged leaves (literally). Scherer looks nervous, but Tumulty is patting him for comfort and handing him a flask to sip on ‘till it’s his turn: she breezed thru this years ago. Therefore, this is the music played:
    .

    .
    or maybe it was this:
    .

    .
and we thought the Senate had unusual traditions (DeMint’s current antics aside).

  • deconstructiva

During new WH groundskeepers’ training, this photo is taken immediately before Obama shows what Bo does when out “on business.”

  • pelhamite1

“United Airlines just called and confirmed that Rahm is on the plane and headed to O’Hare!”

  • deconstructiva

…and related to THAT, Obama is also about to show how to water those disgusting yams in the WH garden (hint: does NOT involve a garden hose).

  • deconstructiva

…and whaddyaknow, the same hydraulics can be used to fight back against DeMint’s planned govt. shutdown, so Obama’s simultaneously training his Senate liaisons to do this when dealing with DeMint in person.

  • deconstructiva

Obama is testing the new WH garden medical marijuana for heights before planting: it’s called the “crotch test.” Plants that you can walk over are harder to spot from DEA helicopters.

  • nflfoghorn

Had no idea CC sang that one!
    …and Nelly needs a shot in the belly-welly :)

  • nflfoghorn

Slightly OT, DeMint should be ashamed of himself. If he wants to be prez RUN like everyone else!

  • nflfoghorn

That’s actually a homegrown tobacco patch. Yeah, that’s it!

  • deconstructiva

…or after realizing that this is a photo of Obama and the freshly harvested bonsai medical marijuana from the WH garden, this might be the music:
    .

    .
(the WH media should have a field day with this one)

  • deconstructiva

Knowing that Christine “You’re In Good Hands” O’Donnell is breeding mice w/ human brains to spy on the WH as part of her plan for world domination, Obama is teaching the staff how to wade thru the ground cover / shrubberies to find / catch them.
    .

    .
(NOW he wishes he had adopted a cat instead of Bo)

The presidents announces his plan to create world Peace by settling conflicts through a game of Twister.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

When Republicans demanded that the president stops talking about Bush and gets over it, he took them very literally.

  • ohiolibb

You put your left foot in, and you shake it all about…

  • deconstructiva

While Joe is hitchhiking back from CA after the SUV died for good, Scherer, Newton-Small, and Pickert are given a hat with today’s assignment picks: Obama and WH bonsai marijuana, “Glee” Britney Spears tribute, and DeMint govt. shutdown. Scherer drew the pot story, whew. Jay and Kate look nervous; one of them will get DeMint and won’t be a happy camper, phew. (at least Adam avoided the mess; he hasn’t even posted a morning reads)

  • nflfoghorn

Michelle warned us that too much urugula would do this to him.

  • nflfoghorn

And why just a snapshot? Heck, putting it on YT would raise his approval rating (WSJ/NBC has it @ 46 BTW)

  • nflfoghorn

    Take 2:
“And why just a snapshot? Heck, putting the video on YT would raise his approval rating (WSJ/NBC has it @ 46 BTW) by at least five points!”

  • pittsburghpoet

“Knowing that Christine “You’re In Good Hands” O’Donnell is breeding mice w/ human brains to spy on the WH as part of her plan for world domination, Obama is teaching the staff how to wade thru the ground cover / shrubberies to find / catch them.”

Brain: “My plan is perfect, Pinky!”

  • apr2563

OMG Obama has the white mans overbite!

  • earljr1

When asked a question about the escalating cost of Obamacare and not finding an answer on his teleprompter, the President tries to flee through the foliage.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    Earl,
    .
    Your humor is improving.

  • earljr1

    Thank you, patrick.

  • sacredh

OT on a dead thread (how sad), but those yellow drapes look like the ones that were in my house when I bought it. They looked like they were stolen from a funeral parlor.

  • sacredh

President Obama’s grand mal seizure is mistaken for a dance.

  • sacredh

Guest: Keep clapping. If he keeps on dancing he won’t try to pass any more legislation.

  • sacredh

It looks like the acid kicked in.
