Sarah’s Insurgency

A year ago she was well on her way to being a flash-in-the-pan also-ran. Today, she’s the Republican Party’s Queen Bee. A look at Sarah Palin’s comeback.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Okay!

More news about unnewsworthy Sarah Palin!

3X, Earl and Rusty/newfreakenblog are going to post nonsensical defenses of this woman’s non-career and how her content free speeches are incredibly important while the rest of Swampland – at least those willing to play this game, get to shoot down every one of the right wing arguments like shooting clay pigeons.

And clearly no one at TIME cares about all…the…dead…kittens. The horror. The carnage.

  • abdullah69

the divine Sarah has discovered every Republicans’ dream, namely a market governed by a constant source of supply (herself and whomsoever of her family that can be pimped out to “reality” TV), and a demand governed by an unfailing consumer ignorance. Why on earth would she wish to get into politics, other than to secure the brand? Expect Sarah to be the Joe to Bristol’s John and Trig’s Bobby. A new political dynasty is born!

  • liberalmeltdown

Love to watch Sarah Palin wind up the propellers on the elitist’s beanies until their rubber bands pop.

MSM, she never went anywhere. You did though. You took that train to the leftcoast and nobody’s coming back. Bye, bye.

What I waste my time doing when I’m bored.

A look at Sarah Palin’s comeback.

(To the tune of ‘Mama Said Knock You Out”)

    Don’t call it a comeback
    She’s frequently jeered
    ‘cept by her peers
    and Teabagger queers
Media ears rain down like a monsoon
    Listen to journos go swoon

    Her smarts? Not overpowerin’
    Yet the G-O-P, she’s devouring
Photo ops up she pops but legit media dissed nonstop
Her speeches are canned, you betcha too
    Tea Party’s a sham
The money she’s gettin’ for lies is nice
    Country’s paying the price

    I’m gonna knock you out…

  • grape_crush

More seriously, thanks to undeserved media attention, Palin never left.

This ‘Palin comeback’ theme is yet another ludicrous storyline being pushed in order to sell a defective right-wing product…Only in this case, Palin is the product, pitchman, and (thanks to people like Jay) the paid ‘celebrity’ endorsement.

I believe you meant “elitists’,” with the apostrophe after the “S.” Or was there a particular elitist that had you so wound up?

And the point of this is what? That she may be elected President? For all of the doubts of Sarah fading away being proven false, it is still a stupid suggestion. Sarah is a hot chic bimbo. That’s about all there is to it. It’s just a matter of celebrity cult. Paris Hilton is as likely to be elected President. Come to think of it, they are much alike. Probably have the same fan base as well.

Lets look at the following Poll and see how far out of touch with reality and the American people Liberal/Progressives and Obama are.
    .
Sarah Palin’s Approval Rating Exceeds That of Obama for the First Time
    .
52% of Voters Say Their Views Are More Like Palin’s Than Obama’s
    .
According to the latest Rasmussen Poll Fifty-two percent (52%) of Likely U.S. Voters say their own views are closer to Sarah Palin’s than they are to President Obama’s.
    .
Just 40% say their views are closer to the president’s than to those of Palin..
    .
Eighty-four percent (84%) of Republicans and 59% of voters not affiliated with either major party say their views are more like Palin’s. Eighty-one percent (81%) of Democrats say they think more like the president.
    .
Interesting that both Independent and Republican voters feel Palin’s political views are closer to their own than Obama.

    Pew: Independents now for GOP
    .
By JEANNE CUMMINGS | 9/23/10 3:03 PM EDT.
    .
In an ominous sign for President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, independent voters now favor Republicans by nearly the same margins that they went for Obama in 2008 and his party in the 2006 mid-term, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press released Wednesday.
    .
“For the third national election in a row, independent voters may be poised to vote out the party in power,” Pew concludes. Independent voters, the Pew survey found, are paying more attention to and are likely to participate in higher numbers in this year’s midterms than those of the past decade.
    .
Unlike the most recent election cycles when independents complained about the lack of progress in Washington on major issues facing the country, these critical swing voters now are expressing high anxiety with what Congress and the White House have already done.
    .
Overall, 45 percent of independents disapprove of the health care reforms passed this year compared to 41 percent who approve of them. A third of independents say Obama’s economic policies have made conditions worse for them rather than better, compared to 24 percent who take a more positive view.
    .
“They feel that the issues have been dealt with but not in a way that is satisfactory to them,” said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center.
    .
The upshot is that independents appear to be clamoring for a time-out in Washington, as they absorb what already has passed and stall any other big new reforms.
    .
That sentiment is evident in the survey’s findings regarding their views toward Washington and the course of the country. In 2006, 53 percent of independents said they’d prefer a smaller government with fewer services; today, 59 percent of them want a check on government growth. In 2006, 67 percent of independents were not satisfied with national conditions; today, 76 percent aren’t happy.

  • Ike Jakson

As I have said before, this lady has achieved some remarkable things for someone as ill-equipped as some are trying to tell us. From nothing to 12 million dollars all on her own in one year takes some doing, unless anyone here wishes to tell me that he/she has done better.

As for the bright spark who can “get to shoot down every one of the right wing arguments like shooting clay pigeons.” Well Sir/ma’am, it’s pretty obvious that you can’t shoot so well because Miss Sarah is doing better every day with more and more people wherever she goes.

Mark these words because a lot of people will remind you about this for a long time. Miss Sarah is here to stay because We the People want her.

  • formerlyjames

In response to 3x and Ike below, I heartily join you. Run, Sarah, bring it on. It may be an ominous sign that I draw a quote from Little Bush, but I’ll stand by it.

“According to the latest Rasmussen Poll Fifty-two percent (52%) of Likely U.S. Voters say their own views are closer to Sarah Palin’s than they are to President Obama’s.”
    .
I find this amazing since so far, Palin has not expressed a comprehensive view of what to do, only what she hates and some lies about health care reform.
    .
I would guess that, just like with many teenage girls who have a crush on an actor or rock star, these people project themselves and their own views onto Sarah Palin while, obviously most of Obama’s stands are well known to most people except for Fox viewers and AM radio listeners who have an incredibly negatively warped view due to their diet of false information.
    .
It’s great how Rasmussen has polling results totally unlike and mostly contradictory to the far, far older and far, far more trustworthy polls, but enjoy life in a bubble 3X.

  • deconstructiva

Thanks, Jay. I read your piece earlier shortly after going up. She has a history of “quitting upward” (which I’ve mentioned before): leaving a job and going for something bigger / more paying, etc. You mentioned some of this in the Alaskans / Sarah Barracuda paragraph, kudos.
    .
I’d love to find out (from you, of course since you’re there and I’m not) how much Sarah + friends and Sarah’s rivalry with the Murkowski family (including the father) played into pushing Lisa Murkowski to go for the write-in candidacy. On different AK topic, I hope you found out why tree leaves up there don’t turn red, only gold. Any word thru grapevine on how well Joe McGinness is doing there? Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Cliff

Ah, I believe I am the elitist that liberalmeltdown is referring to.
    .
Every time I see Palin, I turn green and yell “Cliff smash!” and then I knock some post-it notes to the ground because my liberal arms are too scrawny to do any damage.

  • deconstructiva

Jay, OT but whither your next assignment after this? How about your version of a road trip coming back, like Joe’s? Joe’s covered an interesting trip interviewing key folks in key races, so try a different path. YOU travel the roads from AK thru Canada then thru the US off the beaten path of US hwys. and state roads, NOT the Socialist Eisenhower-created Interstate freeways. Instead of elected officials, talk to real people that the elected politicos often ignore except as props: truck drivers, waitresses, dept. store workers, people out of work (lots of them), etc. No Starbucks, but real diners. Post LOTS of pix too.
    .
You’ve done some best work outside DC such as Haiti and London coverage, so use this to your advantage. Also do the trip right: alone on a motorcycle with only a laptop, Blackberry, camera, and a bag of clothes and undies. While in Anchorage buy a cycle, camera, helmet, and coat / gloves gear (it’s probably getting nippy up there) but save receipts so Accounting won’t hound your ass when you do expense reports.
    .
Gor for it, Jay, I’m serious. Really. Get approval from DC boss and be a real biker chick journalist. The Jay Newton-Small In Search of Real America On A Motorcycle Swamp Road Trip™ will make great blog posts, dead-tree (no paywall, please), and material to start your book. Have fun on remaining trip, even if not as suggested here.

Gorgeous, gracious Gov. Sarah Palin stands tall, walks proud, fears no man. Hers is the leadership we need in these uncertain times.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“Hers is the leadership we need in these uncertain times.”
    .
Yeah during hard times the best thing in the world for us is a blank platform and a series of talking points and hallow catch phrases.
    .
I know if I had not job and mouths to feed, forget policy discussions, give me some talking points, platitudes and catch phrases and I’d sleep easier knowing that health insurance, unemployment benefits to get by and specific real plans to improve this economy are both viewed as beneath this woman’s dignity in her point of view and, in reality, far over her head.
    .
Maybe Sarah Palin fans are upset by statistics, facts and specific plans and find her complete lack of substance with cheeriness comforting like chronically and perpetually overly optimistic Mom.

  • newfreedomblog

“Can we all get along, and stop the vicious grammatical error attacks?”

    .
Unfortunately, this will not happen, liberalmetdown. Too many of the “Elitists” on this very site are bound by their pledge to the left to tear anyone down who will not blindly walk with them into progressive hell.
    .
They will attack you, make fun of you, even make things up about you simply to remain the Elitists they truly are, or THINK they are anyways.
    .
They have absolutely no desire what -so-ever in bringing about a type of dialogue which may actually be positive. They instead enjoy the constant confusion, and the back and forth bickering which occurs on this site on a daily basis. Believe me, I know I have been here now for well over 2 years not only resisting them, but challenging them and lately with your help and others we have been beating them back at their own game.
    .
This is why one of my most favorite quotes from Gandhi, which says, “first they will ignore you, then they will laugh at you, then they will fight you, then you win” is the very description of who they are.
    .
Now with a certain few, they are tired of what we have resisted, tired of how we have used their same tactics against them. Some have even accused us of being the ones who are the 3rd Graders in comment discussions (unbelievable if you know the history of this site).
    .
But, in my world, we fight fire with fire. If they want to be 3rd Graders, then I shall be more than happy to treat them like one. Not until I see many many more of their own kind, put down those who continually use their 3rd Grade tactics at debate will I myself stop. Or, if TIME.com puts some type of standards of behavior into place.

    Jay, Jay, Jay…

“How Sarah Palin is winning the war with(in) the GOP” – she’s gotten the admittedly lame mainstream media to hang breathlessly on her every word.

She just managed to get 7%of the values voters conference to choose her for president in the straw poll.

As for her managing to get some people elected in the primaries – some of it is her influence, some of it is timing, some of it is her jumping on incipient bandwagons not of her making.

A favorite poem from Prayers from the Ark: the prayer of the rooster: “Do not forget Lord, it is I who makes the sun rise”

Some people have a little trouble distinguishing cause and effect.

“a book many felt the world should ignore.” fixed it for ya.

  • bobell

Rasmussen polling results are consistently slanted in favor of Republicans, to the point where many services that aggregate multiple poll results refuse to include Rasmussen. The term “outliers” is often used to describe Rasmussen results, though I think the first syllable superfluous. When Gallup reports poll results that look like Rasmussen’s, it will then be time to break into a sweat.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“Did you steal that line from one of the conservative sites about Barack Obama?”
    .
Obama had one of the longest and closely contested nominations in history where he and Hillary Clinton were going over every possible scenario as to what they would do as president.
    .
Just because you spent the entire 2008 election hiding in your bomb shelter waiting for Marshal Law and the second coming of Jesus Christ saying “La La La I can’t hear you!” every time Obama spoke, does not mean that he was not speaking.
    .
Sarah Palin’s plan is all about Mama Grizzlies and pink elephants and saying the word “liar” at random intervals with no explanation as to who lied, when they lied or what they lied about. That is after her nightmare fantasy about death panels went away.
    .
A parade of Mama Grizzlies and pink elephants with paranoid delusions of death panels is what she is about.
    .
So, my best guess is that, if she were president, she would dose the national water supply with LSD and hope that we all have happy fantasies about pink elephants and Mama Grizzlies walking down main street and paranoid delusions of secret death panels.
    .
If you know what she intended to do about our dependence on foreign oil after gulping down all of the Alaskan oil and what she intended to do in Iraq after blaming them for 9/11 (as she said in an interview that she thought we were in Iraq because of 9/11) please send a link since her speeches and posts are all about paranoid delusions and things which sound like what people talk about when they use LSD.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    From Maverick’s link:
    .
“Don’t underestimate Sarah Palin. Yes, she is hyper-polarizing: she sends her fans into rapture” [of sexual lust] “and drives her detractors stark raving mad” [with laughter] “But she can dominate the news cycle with a single tweet and generate three days of coverage with a single speech (as she did this past Friday in Iowa).” [putting Leno and Letterman at risk due to how unintentionally hilarious she] “Her name recognition is universal.” [Universally associated with ineptitude like Dan Quayle in a dress.]

“You are right to complain that she is not offering specific policy proposals and that her inaccessibility to media outlets other than the one that pays her — Fox News — puts her beyond the kind of scrutiny and accountability we have come to expect for our leaders. (See a TIME video of Sarah Palin and her supporters in Iowa.)” [Because all she is are well rehearsed lines with no policy plans at all.]

“But the mistake you are making is to assume that Palin needs or wants to play by the standard rules of American politics.” [Since her goal isn't to be president, but, to sell as many books and to collect as much money as possible for speaking as humanly possible until she can purchase her home state of Alaska for herself.]
    .
    Thank Maverick.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“…better pop some more pills so you can’t see the river you are about to drown in buddy.”
    .
Is that an Alice in Wonderland reference you are making or are those survival seeds you’re peddling so powerful that eating them makes you so high that you can’t understand Obama’s speeches but see those pink elephants and Mama Grizzlies saving us from the death panels and fighting off the 16,500 ARMED IRS agents?
    .
The DEA is going to find you sooner or later, Rusty, so, why don’t you just turn yourself in now while you only see Pink Elephant, Mama Grizzlies, Armed IRS agents and secret death panels. You might make it out of the mental ward in time for the 2012 election to see Obama re-elected.

Hers is the leadership we need in these uncertain times.

Except that it’s apparently not the leadership you right-wingers want:

“As is the case every month Sarah Palin is the most personally popular of the Republicans, with 66% viewing her favorably. She is followed by Huckabee at 60% and Gingrich and Romney at 57%.

The problem for Palin is that a smaller percentage of the people who like her personally support her for President than any of the other Republicans. 37% of the voters who like Romney also say he’s their choice for the 2012 nomination and the same is true for 32% who like Gingrich and Huckabee. But just 24% who see Palin positively on a personal level translate that to intent to vote for her.”

If you include that she was a failure under ethics investigation at being the governor of a state with fewer people than Staten Island, New York’s least populated borough, that is still less like being president than two years in the US Senate. Come on 3X, you set yourself up. That was a joke waiting to happen.

Palin looks like a management genus.
    .
So… why’d she quit, 3x? Did that half-term teach her everything she needed to know about being a manager… or did the seductive (and very lucrative) lure of the RW welfare and lecture circuit call to her?
    .
She’s too much like Gingrich… smart enough to know there’s more profit in NOT actually taking the plunge. Just use the hint that you might to gin up interest and sell more “product” (whatever it is).

Why am I not surprised you tromped in to throw out your bucket of crap, sartor.
    .
Prove what you claim with copies of the comments you are alleging. Your friends little kevie and IQ53, with the help of a various other assortment of other libtards began this way before you even moved your fat ugly ass into this site.
    .
You IMMEDIATELY upon arrival began slinging the mud and crap right with them.
    .
So go spew your bullcrap someplace else. People who read this blog know who it was, when it was and how it was started.
    .
    The End.

    3X,
    .
In all seriousness, how similar is managing 535 people, all of whom have made promises to others they have or at least should have their loyalty to and if not more than half close to half of whom made promises to do exactly the opposite of what you intend to do to running a business?
    .
If an employee is not following the rules or underperforming you start retraining them. If that fails, you dismiss them. If any of them have a different agenda than what their work assignment is, they are unqualified for the job.
    .
Mayors of large cities and governors are most qualified to be president immediately followed by US Senators or House members since all of them know how to merge their own agendas with the agendas of the people they work with.
    .
The comparison between any job at all in the private sector, non-profit sector or even non-elected public sector to being president is weak at best.
    .
Did you ever have half of the people working for you spreading rumors that you were the antiChrist? Did you ever have your employees try and remove you from your job by claiming that you broke particular laws?
    .
I hope not! If any of those things happened with the company you owned, you must not be willing to fire anybody at all.
    .
However, this is what POTUS faces.

“You IMMEDIATELY upon arrival began slinging the mud and crap right with them.”
    .
    Really?
    .
Then why didn’t I do so with Sasquach, Swissarmybrain and Exiled among others?
    .
Besides, the consensus here is that you are a a total a$$hole so, if you have all day to spare, please show a point when you were randomly attacked by me?
    .
I do remember when you attacked me.
    .
It was about HCR. I asked what unnecessary procedures were done. You sent a link saying that gay men were protected from intrusive testing for AIDS.
    .
You never did give an informed answer about what unnecessary procedures doctors do.
    .
Before we were feuding, I even looked at your blog. It had pictures of clouds and one of the headlines to your many stories was “What to do in case of marshal law”. Headlines like that are usually next to ones like “What to do when Extraterrestrials come to your home” in the National Enquirer. So, the insanity of your blog certainly did not enhance your credibility nor likability.
    .
About two weeks after that you told me that you were calling the FBI to come after me.

I’d like to know what it is that makes somebody who earns $35 grand a year, drives a 10 year old car, and lives in a house that is in desperate need of repair an elitist.
