The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    One word: Arrogant.

  • deconstructiva

Farting 101: when you rip a loud one, stand tall, chin up, and pretend to ignore it. Blame first fool to speak up. When said tooter is the POTUS, everyone pretends to ignore it too.

Alright Adam, who is the dude talking on a cell phone while checking his Blackberry (or iPhone, etc.)? Doesn’t he know those thingies can multitask and he can wear an earpiece to see the screen?

  • deconstructiva

…not to mention the dude clutching hands over his crotch? Is O’Donnell in the Green Room with him?

  • newfreedomblog

First word to come to mind……………………….. Uppity.
    .
Hey if that is what they think I am, then there. I’ll act like it.

    Obama thinking to himself.

“I thought I told the Secret Service to keep Biden from swinging on the chandeliers while we have photographers around…”

    Two words: white racists.

Obama looks up / across the Green Room to see O’Donnell doing a solo dance on the drinks and appetizers table.

  • liberalmeltdown

Hey newfreedom, we caught one. Like fish in a barrel…

First word to come to mind…

Given some of the past statements you’ve made, no one is surprised.

Guys, when we’re doing the trust fall aren’t people supposed to be behind me to catch me?

  • deconstructiva

Obama knows that Bo left his pile on the Green Room rug just before Hillary enters the room …and directly in her red carpet path as she enters in royal fanfare…
    .

    .
…literally, as the Marine Band plays “Crown Imperial” march to her entrance (Obama only entered from the kitchen with a tray of Cheez Whiz on Triscuits and a margarita). But Obama stays silent as she takes one more step….

  • deconstructiva

Obama found out today that first big HCR changes kick in today, so he and the WH team are standing around waiting for Kate Pickert and Karen Tumulty to come over and explain these to them (pitchers of sangria and margaritas + trays of mystery meat on toast points and veggies / dip are waiting for them). No one else knows what the hell’s going on with HCR.

  • deconstructiva

…and after Pickert and Tumulty explained HCR changes in clear detail (and ate all the appetizers and drank the sangria, but that’s cool), Obama knows he did the right thing after all (whatever it was). His first step in his Twelve Step Plan to Socialized World Domination™ is in place. The USSR failed to conquer the world but he will succeed, you betcha.

    .
(yes, RW’ers, that is snark. I rarely need to designate snark but realize one of you might take it literally)

Hey, I’m hardly Mr. 1000 Words, but could you guys spread it around a bit. It seems like they’re always Obama-centric. 535 members of congress, assorted wingers all around… Go beyond the WH Flickr feed once in a while.

    What’s that smell?

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

Obama: Man Boehner, when are you going to shower? You smell of death.

Boehner: I’m on strike from the shower room until HCR is repealed.

I was wondering how far it would take for someone to call him arrogant or uppity. One post. Impressive.

  • kevin

And Rusty of course nails it.

It really is a mystery why everyone thinks you’re a racist.

  • liberalmeltdown

Who’s the wise guy that put the teleprompter on the ceiling?

  • kbanginmotown

    Obama:
    .
    ::inhales:: It was Rahm…
::inhales:: And the beef…no, bean burrito…
    ::inhales:: with pico de gallo….

  • newfreedomblog

The truth is indeed very difficult to hide, especially when in front of a camera. Isn’t that right my fellow libtards?

  • newfreedomblog

Do you know the sad thing, liberalmeltdown. They have so overused the race card now that racism is all but an ineffective claim on their part.
    .
They have all falsely thrown that card now so many times that even real racism will most likely, and unfortunately go un-noticed. The dangerous thing they have done is to allow those who are truly racists to now go mainstream, and people will simply say that the libtards have yet again unfairly labeled someone. People will simply stop listening to their allegations. Other people who are targeted by the real racists shall be hurt.
    .
Good job my liberal loons. Keep up the great work!!

  • gum0nshoe

Hey if that is what they think I am, then there. I’ll act like it.

I’m not sure what is worse, you ‘rising’ to their bait or them missing out on the fact that you’re making fun of their presumptions.
    .
Of course, I’d like to think you’re just making fun of them, but then you have said some racist things in the past…
    .
Its a cry wolf situation here.

  • earljr1

Polls!!! Who gives a flip about polls? I already know that I am doing a lousy job running this country and I could care less what the people think.

  • danielatlanta

Lord, I now know how Moses felt when he came down from Mount Sinai with the words of God ringing in his ears, and all he heard at the bottom was the sound of the people murmuring, murmuring, murmuring, endlessly murmuring. Give me strength.
