The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Must be photoshopped ;-)

Thanks, Michael. Yep, Obama knows about the Ohio State alumni base (which I’m not part of). O-H-I-O!
    .
…alas, he forgot that you don’t wear BLUE when dealing with OSU (it’s Michigan’s color!).
    .
Also, when I saw your title, I thought you referred to Christine O’Donnell’s new campaign slogan: “It’s All About the O.” I presume she got permission from overstock.com to use that.

  • deconstructiva

…good one, but how do you do the “E”?

  • nflfoghorn

For males it shouldn’t be a problem. :)

‘Never knew the macarena was this hard.

  • deconstructiva

In the name of balanced coverage, the next photo will be Obama doing the Michigan gestures …which by the way, what are they? I’m guessing when dealing with Ohio State, their gesture might be the middle finger. (I don’t want to know what gestures West Virginia uses toward Michigan re: Rodriguez).

  • m0mentom0ri

“Will no one help the widow’s son?”

  • deconstructiva

I’ll bet Tressel probably copyrighted or trademarked The Vest™ so no one else can use it.

The best damn band in the land. Script Ohio
    .
Too bad our infamous leader is so clueless about everything else.
    .
Up next, script Obama, spelling D-I-A-S-T-E-R!!
    .

  • deconstructiva

Before the Ohio trip, John Boehner gave Obama a Clemson jersey with Charlie Bauman’s name and number to wear. Fortunately, one of Obama’s staffers warned him in time.

  • nflfoghorn

    Might involve moons….

  • nflfoghorn

Seriously? That would be the guy who Woody Hayes slugged on the sideline of the Gator Bowl back in the day after his interception secured the W for CU. (Just thought I’d help in case someone asked.)

Up next, script Obama, spelling D-I-A-S-T-E-R!!
    .
Yeah, that’s a spelling disaster alright, Rusty.
    .
Thanks, as always, for giving the rest of us someone to laugh at.

  • deconstructiva

Thanks for adding that info. Hayes punching players, Knight tossing chairs: today’s coaches are just too corporate and cautious (except for recruiting, but I digress).

  • conversets

We O-L-I-G-A-R-H-S can’t spell big words like D-I-A-S-T-E-R.
    .
BTW, do you have any P-O-T-A-T-O-E-S ?

  • newfreedomblog

Well E-X-C-U-S-E me!! Here, D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R is that better now little kevie??

Obama to girl: “Hey kiddo – your H stinks- get your sh!t together before I send you to a F-E-M-A camp”

  • grape_crush

That’s not OHIO they are spelling, it’s OUAO, which is most likely some Communist Socialcrat Muslimish word Obama learned from Kenya, which is next to Africa.

  • hippooath

The country or Continent of Africa?

Knight was a player @ OSU. Anger management issues brought him down. IMO he’s a pathetic loser as a person, championships notwithstanding.

  • nflfoghorn

Whoa – Quayle was from Ohio? I thought he was Indianan.

  • nflfoghorn

BO’s BO flunked him out of the Sure commercial.

If you ever get a chance to check out a five-year-old HBO special on the Ohio State-Big M rivalry, do it. It tells you all you need to know about the hatred.

Down here we have a caller to sports talk radio named Buckeye Bill. He won’t even mention the “school up north” by name.

  • allthingsinaname

Here I thought Africa was next to Kenya. Boy I had it backwards! What I libretard I am.

  • grape_crush

As a Michigander, I think that’s a great new way to spell ‘L-A-M-E’…

  • Ivy_B

OT, decon have you looked at @catalogliving on Twitter? It links to their tumblr page and I think it’s a hoot.

  • sacredh

Obama: OK everybody! Show me how many good ideas the Tea Party has!

  • GivenUp

The real joke is that that sentence remains true even if you take out the word “good.”

  • apr2563

    Wow. Good obscure reference.

No, Rusty, I’m someone who’s successful enough that I have the freedom in my work that I can look on the internet whenever and wherever I want.
    .
I come here when I need a laugh, and you always provide one. Such a pathetic, ugly little loser.

  • earljr1

The last town hall meeting was pretty much a disaster for Obama. When asked how much credibility he had remaining with the American people, he and his two guests had to reply ZERO!

  • sacredh

Country Joe and the Fish need to call out the letters.

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

And here I thought the country of Kenya was on the continent of Africa.

  • formerlyjames

    Why are these people smiling?
