On the upside, she may have won the hates-public-speaking vote.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

“Private facilities can offer these savings, in part because they don’t have to contend with the hefty employee pension and wage obligations that government agencies do…
    .
But more recently, an internal Arizona Department of Corrections report released in February 2010, found that, in 2009, those savings narrowed to around $2.75 per inmate per day, and in certain instances, private facilities were found to cost even more per day than public ones.”…
    .
Arizona Attorney General Goddard says that his state Department of Corrections has nearly zero oversight over the prisons that house out-of-state inmates in his state.

“They don’t have to show proof of financial responsibility, they don’t have to comply with Arizona prison construction standards, they don’t have to report disruptions. . .and both the training and staffing is up to the private operator,” Goddard says. “There were a couple of private prisons that went on lockdown and refused to allow the Department of Corrections to come in.”"
    .
    http://money.cnn.com/2010/08/17/news/economy/private_prisons_economic_impact.fortune/index.htm
    .
“(Aug. 21) — Just how lax was security at the privately run prison in Kingman, Ariz., where three inmates escaped and precipitated a three-week, multimillion-dollar manhunt through at least six states?

The Arizona Department of Corrections inspected the prison after the brazen July 30 escape to get an idea. Among its findings:

    • Alarms went off so frequently for no apparent reason that responding to them was a lower priority for guards than “answering the telephone, issuing keys, checking staff in.”
    • The prison perimeter was often unmanned during predictable shift changes.
    • More than 80 percent of the staff was new or newly promoted, and many of them lacked training in procedures and struggled to even load and unload weapons during a security review.
    • An outside dormitory door was left open so frequently that a rock was left nearby, apparently to prop it open.”
    .
    http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/security-breaches-at-private-prison-cited-in-escape/19602457
    .
Now, that is another nightmare – unsupervised prisons hiring unqualified and underpaid guards with no oversight.

“Jan Brewer has done and is doing an excellent job for Arizona as well as the people of the USA.”
    .
    Really?
    .
“The disorder of Arizona’s fiscal house has had far-reaching ramifications, but the university system has borne the brunt of this budgetary nightmare. As the Arizona Board of Regents prepared its preliminary budget for fiscal year 2010, it had to take into account both an increase in student enrollment and decrease in funding from the state. This resulted in massive tuition increases from anywhere between 15.7 and 20.4 percent. These tuition hikes, in tandem with workforce and salary reductions, department closures and increased class sizes, have left all three of Arizona’s major universities, UA, ASU and NAU, writhing in pain. By now, we all know that the university system is in dire straits financially, but how did it get to this point and who is to blame?

In 15 of the past 17 years, Arizona has cut individual and corporate taxes more than any other state in the country; the Republican-led Arizona Legislature’s unhealthy infatuation with tax cuts is responsible. Arizona had the 41st-lowest tax burden in the nation as of 2008 and currently has a deficit projected to reach $2.6 billion for the 2011 fiscal year.

The Arizona Legislature seems to believe cutting taxes will increase state revenue. This flawed reasoning is what has caused the state’s exorbitant deficit. Furthermore, the tax cuts were not initially matched with spending cuts. The legislature lowered taxes and spent money the state didn’t have. Cutting taxes without implementing commensurate spending cuts means a massive budget deficit down the road. Now that the legislature has finally realized this, in order to offset the state’s lack of revenue, they have slashed expenditures with a dull hatchet, which for the university system has meant higher tuition and a budget crisis of epic proportions.

Conventional wisdom among most economists is that cuts to expenditures during a recession do far more harm than good. Drawbacks in public spending will result in a reduction in the quality and quantity of government services and will decrease the demand for private sector goods, which will only worsen economic conditions. Not to mention the effects it will have on the K-12 and university systems, which are already reeling from a lack of state funding. ”

The only reason Brewer is even governor is because Obama selected Janet Napolitano to become his Secretary of Homeland Security. Napolitano was one of “our Democrats” and the people of Arizona re-elected her in 2006 by a whopping 2-to-1 margin over “your Republican” candidate.
    .
We’ll see if Brewer can win election in her own right. We only have Rasmussen polls for the race right now, so there’s no reliable polling just yet. We’ll see in November.

  • perrywhite1

I don’t know if this has been addressed directly in the Swamp, but just before her brain freeze, she said Arizona has “balanced the budget.” It has not; it’s facing a huge shortfall. Naturally the Republican response is to suggest the pain be shared only by those in the middle class, by dropping firefighters, policemen and teachers. But the lie alone is reason enough for her not to be re-elected.

Not to mention the prison scandal. From a political standpoint it should be a career-killer (assuming it isn’t flat-out a felony), but it’s worse from a social perspective. The problem with privatizing everything is that profit becomes the sole motivator, and instead of money being spent on the purpose of prisons, money is skimped everywhere but executive salaries. So prisoners simply walk out, but don’t fret, the CEO still gets his bonus — or we assume since they freeze out even the Department of Corrections.

Then throw in the lie about the beheadings and her fleeing the press so she doesn’t have to account for anything, and if she’s re-elected it will simply reinforce Arizona’s downward spiral. As troubling as her brain freeze is — being unprepared during prepared remarks — it’s the least of the reasons she’s dangerous to the republic.

  • 3xfire3

    obama,
    .
Yes that must be why Obama’s approval ratings are in the mid 40s and most Democrats running for office don’t want to be seen with him.

  • obamadems

    To xfire3,

Corporate polls are not facts. To gage popularity, you go by facts. The fact is President Obama’s organization arm was out there knocking on doors to the tune of over 200,000 on the day of Beck’s rally. The truth is Obama is out there supporting the democrats and raising millions of dollars for them. The fact is President Obama is the most popular man on the Internet, and the world. He’s not unpopular when you look at the facts.

  • obamadems

Michael Scherer, you are a walking, living nightmare of lies and distortion. You are no better than Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck — you are just like them, welcome to the Hell crowd.

Kathy, you can’t remember that speech Obama made where he said, “I am a great public speaker”? Neither can I.
    .
Funnier than Brewer’s inability to sum up her accomplishments is the video of her posted on this thread of her running from reporters regarding the mythical headless torsos. There needs to be a new brand of running shoes marketed for tea party candidates who must escape rapidly from pesky questioners.
    .
Also, contrary to her claim, Arizona has a budget deficit.

  • apr2563

  • sacredh

3xfire3, that was a joke, just as I’m sure you were joking about those of us on the left being children because we have a differing opinion. The bet itself doesn’t worry me at all. A month would over before either of us could think twice about it. I’m not even all that sure that republicans taking over the house AND senate would be all that bad in the long run. Two years of republican control would more than likely make Obama’s re-election a given. Unless they compromise, they’d just get voted out again in 2012 and I have a hard time believing they’d even consider compromising. I find it even harder to believe they could muster 67 votes for an over-ride of a Presidential veto. It should be interesting.

  • maverick2k9

3x, from Michael Scherer’s own article:
    -
“At the White House, advisers take comfort in the fact that at this point in their presidencies, both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton scored slightly lower approval ratings than Obama.”
    -
Now, putting these approval ratings in their proper context, can you envision Michael Scherer travelling back in time and writing an article about Reagan/Clinton as Mr Unpopular??
    -
Fact of the the matter is that Michael Scherer wants to be a popular Washington Pundit and he seems to think the shortest route to achieving that is to write an article that undermines the most popular President in recent history.
