I’ve mentioned this before that, basically, anybody in my extended family born before 1955 is conservative and everybody in my extended family born after 1955 is liberal. I think it’s a little bit biased in your favour though. Notice how you only beat us in 1 metric on ‘Quality of Life’–consumption per capita. There was 1 tie, and everything else we were ahead on, and yet still they saw fit to put you 1 rank ahead on overall ‘Quality of Life’. In my opinion that’s a crock and the idea that consumption per capita is a major, overriding quality of life metric is part of what’s gotten our planet into such a mess in the first place.

That said, we, and 9 other ‘extremely liberal’ countries came out ahead of you. How are the ‘right wing’ countries doing? Which countries would you even consider those to be by the way? I’m curious because Canada is to the right of most European countries, and most other countries in the world that could be considered to the right of America are failed states and dictatorships, so why do you consider yourselves in the middle?

A dirt poor black man from Haiti or a Latino from Mexico can immigrate to American and work very hard, as all immigrants before them have, and within one generation his family can achieve a middle or upper class standard of living. No place on earth offers as great of an opportunity to achieve ones dreams as the USA.

My great, great grandparents did it when they immigrated in 1852. They also were dirt poor when that arrived. It took them 4 generations to achieve a middle class standard of living.

My experience has been that people who come here from a country that does not have a social welfare system, have such strong work ethics that they achieve a middle class standard of living within one generation.

I have several relatives that fit into this category. My wife’s younger sister was in this category. We were always sending her money to help out thinking it would give her the opportunity to improve her life style. We finely realized her ambitions were not the same as ours. She died of lung cancer last year.

I have a 24 year old niece that is participating in 5 or 6 different welfare and government programs. Two out of wedlock children and a live in boy friend and she has never worked a day in her life. She’s on total disability because of something supposedly with her legs but she walks around just fine and certainly could work at a desk job.

When I was in Africa 2 years ago the ambition and attitude of the poor was amazing. 60% unemployment but they found ways to survive. They were very creative in finding ways to earn enough money to take care of their families.

My wife and I shared a meal with a family in a stick built hut. Joseph the father rented 1 acre of land and grew enough to barter and feed his family. He and his wife have 5 girls. My wife and I have been sponsoring two of them to get an education. One just graduated from a 2 year technical college and the other is 8 and in the 3rd grade. They are wonderful people.

The other 3 girls also have American sponsors for there education.

Most Republicans and Conservatives love their fellow man and woman. They may disagree with the political views of people on the left of our political system but they do not hate them personally.

Really, that’s all you have? Everything you disagree with is a ‘liberal Rag’ but by the standards of the rest of the world, Newsweek is right wing. It isn’t liberal at all except maybe compared to Red State and other far-right publications. The idea that Newsweek is liberal is already thrown out by the fact that it uses modern day conservative ideas about consumption to justify giving America a ranking 2 places higher than the more neutral UN Human Growth Index. If you disagree with that too then the burden is on you to find a more reliable source that uses actual objective measurements and not just ideological rhetoric to make the case that the US is actually still the best place in the world to be born in.

The figures are very simple and very hard to dispute: average income, literacy rate, infant mortality rate, average life expectancy, and so on. So what do you think? Those numbers mean nothing because they don’t paint the picture you want, or that everyone is lying?

The problem with trying to communicate with people that think like you is that you don’t adjust your beliefs based on actual facts. You will only adjust your beliefs based on something that affects you emotionally. Nothing I say, nothing I show you of a factual nature can possibly change your mind. Only some kind of great personal tragedy could ever do that. It puts people like me at a great disadvantage because I can actually change my mind based on new facts. If you can actually prove something to me, factually and logically, it will cause me to re-evaluate my position. The same does not hold true for you and so this whole exchange is completely pointless, which is why I haven’t bothered posting here in almost 2 years.
