The Soft Bigotry of Soft Bigotry

Shame on all those Republicans salivating over President Obama’s support for the Cordoba Islamic Center, which is to be built several blocks away from Ground Zero in New York. Despite all the high-minded words about “sensitivity” for the families of the victims, this is slimeball politics, pure and simple, except for when it descends into outright religious bigotry–which seems to be what happens every time Newt Gingrich opens his mouth. Does that demented, anger-infused doofus actually believe that putting the mosque near Ground Zero is the equivalent of putting a swastika next to the Holocaust Museum? Does he really want to slander the tens of thousands of hard-working, freedom-loving, fiercely entrepreneurial Muslims living in this country? I mean, what a jerk.

Meanwhile, I’m not surprised that Mark McKinnon, George W. Bush’s media adviser during the campaign, has defended Obama on this. Both Presidents Bush would have done the exact same thing…as would have every American President who served during my lifetime, even Nixon. Religious freedom is one of those inalienable rights that we’re endowed with by our Creator–Allah, Yahweh, whatever you want to call Him/Her. It ain’t negotiable, even if the “moderate” leader of the mosque said some obnoxious things about American “complicity” in the 9/11 attacks. The right to say obnoxious things is protected, too–if it weren’t, Pat Robertson would have been out of business by now. I mean, wasn’t he the guy who said that 9/11 happened because “God lifted His protection from us” because of abortion rights? Doesn’t that put Robertson in the same league as al-Rauf? Should we not allow the Christian Broadcasting Network to have access to New York’s cable systems?

Finally, a personal note:

My grandmother’s maiden name was Rachel Mendoza. Her family–a famous Sephardic tribe–migrated to Spain after the Romans kicked the Jews out of Israel. They lived there peaceably, sometimes prosperously, sometimes creatively for the entire Cordoba period, the era of Islamic rule. They were kicked out of Spain, with all the other Jews, in 1492–by the Catholic King and Queen, Ferdinand and Isabella, who were quite the religious fanatics when they weren’t busy funding Christopher Columbus. The point is, Islamic rule in Spain was some of the better times during my family’s 2000 year wander. The last 100 years have been, without question, the best of times for us Mendoza/Kleins because of the rights we enjoy under the United States Constitution. Those who would mess with those rights now may win some short-term political victories, they might shave some more points off the President’s poll ratings, but they will not succeed in the long run–because this is America and the forces of tolerance always prevail over those of bigotry.  And if the bigots do succeed in the long run, this won’t be America anymore.

I’m proud the President said what he did, but he couldn’t legally do otherwise: if he hadn’t supported the mosque, he would not have been upholding the Constitution of the United States.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

    Joe,
I don’t read it as President Obama supporting the Mosque as much as I read it as his defending the Muslims right to build it. It’s all about the First Amendment.

Why Soft Bigotry Joe? This is hard bigotry. The kind of hard bigotry the Republican party has been trading in since 1972 to distract working class whites from realising that the entire Republican economic platform for those making less than six figures can be summarised as BOGU (Bend over, Grease Up.)

    Good post.
    -
DougJ at Balloon Juice has a link to Salon, tracing this back to noted insane person Pamela Gellar, and the Rupert Murdoch noise machine. He concludes:

This is why I simply have no respect for anyone who remains with the GOP. Period. This is the modern Republican party in a nutshell, whether it be death panels, the MONSTER MOSQUE, terror babies, or Obama’s birth certificate. The crazy people are running the show, and folks who remain in the GOP but tepidly speak out against it aid and abet the lunacy. We should stop using the phrase “reasonable Republican” and “sane conservatives” and call them what they really are- accomplices. It’s Malkin and Gellar and Louis Gohmert and Palin and Bachmann’s party now, and they’re just providing them cover.

    -
Seems indisputable to me. The few folks out there who try to sound non-insane, like Ross Douthat and even Richard Lugar, are complicit participants in all this. The only reason they aren’t called out more often is the soft bigotry of the low expectations that everyone has for Republicans.

Joe we are either a democracy or we are not. From the right we are not a democracy, more a theocracy – meaning we tolerate every brand of Christianity – from the Swaggart and other sexual deviants (remember that homo who was exposed during the campaign ) to the self-important hypocrites such as Newt Gingrich.

Question: what is Christianity? If Jesus decided to do a walkabout in our counrty what would he think?

I would like to see a Christian cult buy one of the secular buildings in the area and open a charismatic prayer revival center. Create kind of a food court of religious cults. Who can out pray or out chant the other? Onsite miracles or virgins from heaven? A religious Barnum & Bailey center. Good for tourism in NYC, as if it needed any.

More rain fell on Monday, adding to the worst flooding in memory and confronting Pakistan with a complex array of challenges, government and relief officials warned. Though they range over the immediate, medium and long term, nearly all need to be addressed urgently.
    ….
“There was a first wave of deaths caused by the floods themselves,” said Maurizio Giuliano, a United Nations spokesman. “But if we don’t act soon enough, there will be a second wave of deaths,” caused by a lack of clean water, food shortages and diseases transmitted by water or animals.

“The picture is a gruesome one,” Mr. Giuliano said.

The United Nations has appealed for $460 million in international donations, but only about a third of that has been provided so far. Relief officials were clearly concerned that donations from abroad would fall short of what was needed, especially when compared with those for relief of other recent disasters, like the earthquake in Haiti.
    .
I wonder how much money is being spent bombing Pakistan. And on aid to their corrupt military leadership.

  • formerlyjames

Rusty, I was going to reply with a somewhat snarky comment to your usual ridiculous comment, pointing out the absurdity of your list of items:
    .
Gun ownership? Who wants it banned? (pretty much nobody; a little more control: different story)
    .
Individual Responsibility? Who wants it to be one big happy Collective? (again, pretty much nobody)
    .
Who wants religion restricted at every turn of the dial?
(if by “restricted,” you mean keeping your religious beliefs out of my life and mine out of yours, pretty much everybody)
    .
Then, I read this: “The ONLY reason you feel some sort of affinity for the constitution now is because you have some sort of affection for Terrorist and hope that one day the terrorists kill another 3,000 Americans.”
    .
That’s a repugnant comment. I’d ask you to apologize but I know you won’t. You really should be banned from this site. If you can’t make your points without resorting to those kinds of disgusting slurs, you have no place here.

  • stuartzechman

Of all people, Amy Sullivan in the prior post has the best analysis I’ve seen anywhere close to a national publication, much better than this from Joe Klein, actually:

Reid’s “you have the right; you just shouldn’t do it” position is perfectly in line with public opinion on the mosque issue. But it’s public opinion that has been shaped by round-the-clock arguments on Fox News conflating the Muslim backers of Cordoba House with the September 11 attackers, making the building of the center a vital battle in some war between civilizations, and, just this morning, Newt Gingrich comparing Cordoba House planners to Nazis. Harry Reid was in a position to challenge these arguments and help build a new case for the appropriateness of Cordoba House. He chose instead to yield to them.
    .
    Read more: http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2010/08/16/reid-comes-out-against-cordoba-house/#comments#ixzz0wp7wHK4l

The only thing she leaves out is her tribe, the journalists.
    .
It’s not just Harry Reid’s job to push back against Fox “News” Network’s deliberate, cynically partisan spread of ignorance amongst her fellow citizens, it’s the political press corps’ job, too.

  • jpl9

At what price will the Republicans win… Since the President has been inaugurated they have tried to find a wedge issue to divide us. Shortly after his election they pointed to a school in NJ that sang songs and pointed that as a fact that Obama thought he was a god. Just this summer we had scary blacks, scary Latinos and now scary Muslims Yeah they might sweep in November but that says more about us and what the Bill of Rights and the Constitution means to us.
Did anyone slam Newt when he said well the Saudi’s don’t allow churches on every corner? Nah, because no one pointed out that the Saudi’s don’t have our Constitution.
I’m ashamed. Rusty can dance in the streets but some of us can remember when the United States of America meant something.
It’s okay to have a strip site but not a religious institute near ground zero. I for one am not proud of MSM or the folks that preach this hate.

Some wise men once said that a society gets the politicians (or journalists) it deserves.

    .
So, whether I am right or I am wrong, I can say that Joe Klein might be a person who consciously and critically evolves his thinking (even though he is not, as stuartzechman continually reminds all, a “Liberal” ; evolution of that sort knows no political boundaries)
    .
And you can misread or misunderstand or twist what I say in your mind into an excuse to shout that someone you have never even met is an essential body part, even if such language might be offensive to a Christian grandmother out for a stroll in the Swamp, or imprinting tomorrow’s Young Republicans getting their feet wet for a future in civics.

    NewIrrationalBlog,
From reading one of your recent discussions with mycophile (and others) about the history of Swampland, I thought you were making real progress in logic and civility.
Seems not. You continue to attack Joe Klein and Mr. Obama for “finally” upholding the constitution in a manner which you apparently desire so deeply. Huh? Isn’t that what you’ve wanted?
And no, sadly, it is not end of story simply because a bunch of people who don’t live in New York have some opinions which contradict what we rightfully owe our fellow Americans, Muslim or else.
P.S. Just for fun, please watch the first 2 minutes of The Daily Show from tonight (8/16) to see your beloved Glenn Beck assert the same conspiracy concerns as al Rauf and many others had; only, as always, in a more fanatical fashion. Stewart is quite adept at creating meaningful and concise caricatures.

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

Lets get real. This isn’t a “sensitivity” issue. How many RW voices are calling for no new mosques to be built anywhere in this country?? No single ethnic or religious group has been so badly treated in this country since WWII when Japanese-Americans were interned, their homes and businesses confiscated by the government.
    .
If those of us who truly believe in the power of the Constitution allow Cordoba House founders to be bullied into moving from this site, what will come next? What religion will next feel the sting of hatred and betrayal by those who are charged with protecting the Constitution?
    .
Just like Japanese-Americans did not have any part in the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Islam did not attack us on 9/11. 9/11 was the work of a group of deranged followers of a sociopath who uses a twisted, cheery-picked interpretation of Islam to achieve his goals. (Sounds very much like the fundamentalists in this country).

yeah, I kinda’ had the same reaction.
but then I remembered he had not yet again done so with me again.
    and change isn’t always linear.
    .
but working with someone only in absentia,
in a linear, sequential, one-at-at-time, written, symbolic (alphabetical) language,
    via a relatively instantaneous medium,
can be continually exhausting and take “virtually” forever. Especially when there is so much other stimulation that provides them familiar rush.
    .
and, of course, there is the factor that people don’t describe what they see, they see what they can describe
    .
Any given person behind a screename curtain might simply not speak the language of logic (in the sense of Ancient Greek coiners of that word, logike.) If so, then the only things that the wizard would see would be things which his manner of describing could accommodate, leaving out the things our “logos” (to the Greeks, only one way, among several ways, of speaking) can describe.
    .
Many have suggested, I among them before, that dialogue with them on that level is therefore energy better spent in a different direction. I remain curious, yet ready for a 180.

It’s difficult for me to see the distortions and “outrage” about the mosque as anything other than bigotry.

A friend was telling me that after the Berlin wall fell her then-young but wise child said to her, “alright, who do we hate now?” The Republican record of the last 100 years has been one of hatred, demonizing whatever group turns up next on the list.

  • Alex Vallas

All of this is so frigging absurd. Who started this protest? The President was defending and upholding the Constitution of the United States and Freedom of Religion. He did not endorse or condemn the building of the Islamic Center. He clearly stated that was for New Yorkers to decide. Why are people making such a big issue of Ground Zero in religious overtones? It was a huge disaster that killed many people of all religions, but if it is considered so sacred, then no buildings housing shops, restaurants, amusement centers should be built. It should be converted to a memorial park. Also, all the sleezy stores within two or three blocks of Ground Zero should be demolished. Let’s go a little further, let us declare Pearl Harbor sacred grounds. Add portions of the Pentagon that were attacked, That and all other areas where Americans have been killed.
The GOP and it’s offshoot the Tea Party take every opportunity to promote hatred and bigotry with great concentration on Muslims, Mexicans, Gays, Blacks, and the list goes on and on and on and on.
The likes of Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, O’Rielly, Boehner, Cantor, McConnell, Rove, Coulter, Bachman, DeMint, and a host of others should look in the mirror and ask themselves “are my efforts to polarize the country for personal gain more important than the the country itself?”

IMHO, Senator Reid has shown himself to lack courage or integrity by taking this stand.

By contrast, President Obama has shown that he has more integrity than his cowardly critics, and that he is enough of a mensch to endure their scorn.

Although I am ba’al teshuvah and consider the siting of Cordoba House to be in poor taste, I would not interfere with the New York Muslim Community’s right to build it.

    1. Their actions violate no Federal Law, State Law, or New York City Law;

    2 Their actions violate no clause of the Constitution of the United States or case law that has followed from the Constitution;

    3. Their actions violate no precept of Halacha (Rabbinic Law).

IMHO, building Cordoba House flies in the face of the bin Ladens of this world and shows them that we have what they do not have and will never have. It confirms the fact that the United States is the freest nation the world has ever known. It demonstrates that MONSTERS CANNOT TERRORIZE AMERICANS.

    Let Freedom Ring!

This type of writing is so typical for time magazine… and certainly so typical for Joe Klein.

Time, and Joe Klein, purposefully distort the event. NO ONE is disputing the right to build a mosque two blocks away from ground zero. EVERYONE is angry about a potential Muslim terrorist leading the effort to build a mosque… EVERYONE is angry about the symbolism – a mosque going up over a destroyed World Trade Center.

Time magazine and Joe Klein are angry because their idiot president tried to align with Muslims, and yet tried not to alienate the average American.

Newsweek magazine is history… it is time for time to become history. Good riddance.

While I disagree with President Obama on almost everything, I find myself in complete agreement with him on this point. I wish he would have added some statement about how building a mosque so close to ground zero would be the epitome of insensitivity…and, while he did touch on the sensitive nature of building a mosque so close to ground zero, perhaps his words could have been a bit more forcefull to that end. I find myself wondering how a president who has demonstrated so much intelligence could blunder so much on such an issue. My only conclusion is that, despite our differences in opinion, President Obama loves and respects The Constitution as much as I and I have discovered new-found respect for the man…because of our differences in polital beliefs, I doubt I would ever vote for him…but I’m happy to see a president place principles over politics.

The Muslims behind this “mosque business” are either horrifically insensitive or spiritually complicit in the 9/11 attacks. I suspect it’s a little of both, and now President Obama has thrown in his lot with them.

This has NOTHING to do with “religious freedom.” It has EVERYTHING to do with sensitivity, respect and good faith.

The Muslims pushing this mosque project, AND President Obama, are horrifically insensitive, they totally lack respect for others and are acting wholly in bad faith.

I’m glad Obama made these statements as well; with 90 days before the election I want him to do everything possible to hurt his party.

As a reporter you should realize there are reasons beyond bigotry for not wanting the Mosque there, you should realize that Americans have a right to voice their opinion – in this case about hating the Mosque, it not being welcomed, and the inflammatory effect it will have.

I’m also amazed at how you on the left attacked Bush and our military endlessly regarding Camp Guantanamo and Abu Grahb in terms of its propaganda effect. Apparently you can’t recognize any propaganda prop that is real.

  • streenz

Has it not become obvious to even the dull headed, no matter what the President says the MAJORITY of Republicans will take the opposite road. Folks, get over it he won. Why not help instead of hinder. No wonder the rest of the world looks at us as a country sighs and shakes their heads. We are supposed to be leaders, what an example we send.

  • rossed200

    No Alex,
This is not a local issue, New York was not attacked America was.

Further, if you got your news from sources other than Obama and his surrogates (MSNBC, Newsweek, et. al) you would realize that very few are pushing for legal action to prevent the Mosque, instead we are making it clear that although we were attacked by Jihadist that represent but a small fraction of Islam, building the Mosque is offensive and insensitive and not welcomed. Even the believe that the real purpose of this Mosque is propaganda, is not a cause for legal action.

Americans have a right to protest and voice their dissatisfaction, whether it regards a Mosque, government control of healthcare, huge unsustainable debt, or regulations that act to stifle competition.

Perhaps this out-of-touch president should be as cognizant of the first amendment when applied to American citizens, as when applied to foreign contributors wishing to build a Mosque.

“migrated to Spain after the Romans kicked the Jews out of Israel.”

Oh poor, poor Jew, One has to love that Jewish all too Jewish lachrymose reading of history. The Romans never expelled the Jews from Israel. That is a tired Jewish myth, just like ‘Egyptian captivity.’ Reference: Greun, 2004. “Diaspora: Jews amidst Greeks and Romans.”

“-by the Catholic King and Queen, Ferdinand and Isabella, who were quite the religious fanatics”

Actually, Ferdinand and Isabella were rather fair with the Jews; the push was from the Inquisitors. To quote Roth, “Even after the Jews had left Spain, the Monarchs continued to investigate whether their orders concerning the protection of the Jews has be scrumptiously observed.” Reference: Roth, Conversos, Inquisition, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain.

  • doctorfixit

Joe Klein, Journ-0-lister. Need I say more? Islam is not a religion, it is a pseudo-religious totalitarian ideology. Muslims are expert at using western tolerance to kill western civilization. You don’t tolerate Islam, either you surrender to it, or you destroy it. Muslim tradition is to erect victory shrines at the site. Hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide will rally to this victory shrine. The left wants them to have their victory shrine. The left is allying itself with Islam because of Islam’s destabilizing power. Divide and conquer, divide and conquer.

  • http://lesacred.wordpress.com Chuck

“because this is America and the forces of tolerance always prevail over those of bigotry.”

    Oh, the “bigotry!”

Bigotry is defined as being “obstinately or intolerantly devoted to ones own opinions and prejudices.”

The only bigots I see here are those of Klein’s ilk, devoted to their Manichean-moralistic reading of reality. Life is complex, situations are complex — and their are real conflicts of interest and values — not reducible to some progressive morality tale, propounded by the Inquisitors of the day.

  • http://endoftherope.wordpress.com endoftherope

Comedy show or not, it is a valid analogy.

  • nouseforliberals

This argument about “bigotry” is garbage. How many times are there local disputes between groups wanting to build religious schools and local officials? I’ve seen it a million times in Southern California. There’s no difference in my mind between building the Cordoba house around Ground Zero and trying to put a Chabad (i.e., Hassidic) school in a residential neighborhood.

Liberal dopes like Smokin’ Joe can pat themselves on the back for their wonderful tolerance, but their moral preening (along with their hero, President One-Term) is nauseating. It’s amusing to watch them latch onto an issue and watch them go down in flames.

  • cwon14

Have any of the details been considered? Like who is behind the mosque? (terror supporters for example)

NYC is dominated by moonbats of all types, it’s sad for our country the those trapped there.

  • http://leftcoastrightbrain.wordpress.com leftcoastrightbrain

Yeah, that’s a helpful insight. In your tiny Dim world. One occupied by you and Joe and the other uber-leftoids, is it possible to entertain the thought that opposition to this is opposition to the SITE and not the religion, not the Mosque, not the worshipers?

What’s the GOP got to do with any of this?

  • rudbekia

And then there is hard bigotry, isn’t there? Klein’s own, virulent, anti-Christian brand, shared by Frank Rich, and so many “progressive” bloggers. The resentment is palpable. Here’s a wild guess: that seems to be conflated with his rabid, simplistic support for the mosque. A pc punk.

One blogger asked why the 9/11 families didn’t matter to Klein. They don’t. They interfere, somewhat practically, with his near auto-erotic sanctimony.

It’s curious that Klein’s family did not choose to migrate to a Muslim country. Why not? I’m glad they found the United States, with its freedom of speech, thought, and religion, hospitable, and were able to thrive. What, and who, made that possible? We got that way through a delicate balance. Freedom requires vigilance. And adults.

My family arrived by way of the Sea Venture, with a detour in Bermuda, then Jamestown, and also on the Mayflower, and signed the Compact.

We require no lectures on tolerance, or the Constitution, from Joe Klein. Perhaps you’ve heard: the First affords the right to speak out when that tolerance is abused. This isn’t about freedom of religion, but freedom from it.

In a pluralistic society tolerance and respect are a two-way street. Nobody’s special, and that includes Daisy Kahn. It is the symbolism that deeply offends nearly three-quarters of Americans — Democrats, Republicans, Independents. Even in the aftermath of 9/11, this great country has been welcoming to muslims. We are fully aware that fanatics unleashed the existential violence of 9/11. The mosque’s builders need to learn to play with others, and in this specific, issue, honor their sensibilities.

Klein’s Pavlovian cultural relativity has led to a grievance culture where entitlement , for chosen groups, is presumed. Uh-uh. Abide by the social contract.

Hey Joe, does your back hurt from carrying BO’s water ALL the time. I mean at some point even you have to agree that BO is one of the worst presidents EVER!
really, Joe, at some point you have to see it!

  • historyshowsus

This is misdirection at it’s finest.
There is never been a real conservative who disagrees that these people have the “right” to do this.
The Nazi party (yes it still exists) has the right to put a monument, building, whatever near the holocaust memorial as well. We also have a right to fly the confederate flag on public buildings (as long as it is below the American flag).
Common decency prevents this and regarding the confederate flag public outrage has stopped it because it is viewed as a slap in the face to blacks in this country.
Too bad that the left doesn’t have the same sensitivities towards Moslems. Too bad it is only the redneck conservatives that the hypocritical left directs their outrage towards.
Too bad that the Islamic community has negated all their protestations of attempts to heal the relations between their community and the citizens of this country by slapping this in our face and demonstrated what a lie their rhetoric really is. Naming it the Cordoba house ought to tell you what their agenda is. It is absolutely no coincidence that this building will be named after their greatest victory over Europe in their entire history. You are terrible ignorant of Islamic history and mindset.
Too bad Obama has attacked a strawman with his rhetoric of “legality” and “rights” which nobody has EVER denied.
The left just keeps digging their hole deeper.

  • historyshowsus

So, when the black community protests flying a confederate flag on a public building then it is just bigotry against redneck whites? Of course not.
    I is about common decency.
    Where is their common decency?
Are you really so clueless that you think this location wasn’t chosen for a reason? Nothing they do is just happenstance. Are you so clueless that the battle of Cordoba was Islam’s greatest victory against Europe and this “Cordoba House” celebrates Islam’s greatest victory over the US?
This “bigotry” argument is hypocritical. The left prevents perfectly legal displays all the time. Why is it that it’s only bigotry when the outrage is against blacks and moslems.

  • isnrblog

What about the “Westboro Baptist Church” in Topeka Kansas who regularly show up at our fallen soldiers funerals bearing signs that say “God hates fags”, “The Pope is in Hell”, “God hates America”, and “God hates your tears” surely if their rights are protected all should be… the hubris of the distracters is disheartening.

Also, when a group of nuns proposed building a church near the remains of a World War II concentration camp where many Jews perished, the Pope said no. He quite correctly understood it was hallowed ground. This issue has zero to due with religious bigotry and everything to do with the feelings of the 9/11 families. The political correctness of the other side on this issue is truly sickening.

“What is not acceptable is to prejudge any group, or to let fear and bias trump the towering American (and for us Catholics, the religious) virtues of hospitality, welcome, and religious freedom.” – Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York on the subject back in June.

Overplaying the bigot card again, as you Obama kool-aid drinkers are wont to do. You liberals constantly harp about sensitivity and political correctness…can’t say or do ANYTHING which may be the least bit offensive to anybody, right? This mosque isn’t about the right to build it…they have the right to build a shrine commemorating all the great things that happened during the holocaust. The question is – should they build it? The answer is no.

  • floridajoe55

The standards of journalism continue to sink. Klein starts with an attack of those with a different view, then throws in the red herring of “Religious Freedom”, followed by a totally irrelevant synopsis of his family history.

I honestly try to understand liberals, but as in this case, often can’t. Why would you be proud of Pres. Obama in this case? He basically stood up at a Ramadan dinner and pandered to his Muslim audience making it sound like he supported the Ground Zero Mosque. Then, the next day down in FL, he says he was only referring to the constitutionality. So, did he stand up for the mosque or not? It’s not heroic for a president to stand up for the constitution. That’s the minimum I expect.

But, in all honesty, anyone who hasn’t figured that the real issue isn’t constitutionality or their “right” to build the mosque, doesn’t belong in the debate. Just because you have the right to do something doesn’t make it the right thing to do.

Is there anyone out there that can explain: How does building an Islamic structure on a site where terrorist killed 2,700 of our fellow Americans (and some foreign visitors) in the name of Islam heal any wounds or build any bridges.

This isn’t about rights, it’s about compassion and a message. Compassion dictates to build elsewhere. The message is either we Muslims can understand and live peacefully with the thoughts and feelings of others or the other message is you do not matter if you’re not Muslim.

This isn’t anti-Islam. I don’t think most Americans want a SHINTO SHRINE AT PEARL HARBOR either.

There are a far more productive and constructive means to keep everyne happy. It is a pity the President does not know how to bring people together – rallying DEMS is not building bridges. At least 50% plus of the citizens “dislike” him and his views on many areas.

Net is he does not represent the people and this will result in him being a one term President – unless he changes.

The USA is “capitalist” society with individual views to match this idealogoy, it is not a “socialist” society and the quicker he learns that lesson the better of he will be as President. His mistake is he is a lawyer and a community worker – he has never truly contribute to growing a business and employing people to change their lives for the better. He has only experience in using community activist to get govt money, just like all the collegs and university that are so full of left wing professors that have never completed a hard days work in their lives. As a lawyer well what can you expect he reads the constituition and interprets and twists its meaning and intent from the founding fathers.

Oh I’m so shocked that you support President Obama Joe seeing as you’ve been a part of the Obama Propaganda media machine spinning stories in his favor with your Journolist cohorts since back in 2008. You have zero credibility with anyone who isn’t an Obama Zombie Mr. Klein!

I find it really amazing that when one does not agree with the liberal take on reality the name calling starts. Joe Klein participates in that conduct. No one questions the right of Moslems to worship in this country. They have thousands of mosques. What we question so why this particular group of Moslems have to worship at this particular location when it was their brethern who blew up the buildings. The imam at this location cannot even admit Hamas is a terrorist organization. If this were the Klu Klux Klan, Mr. Klein would not be so generous in his views. Whether they have the right to worship at this site is not the issue. The issue is if they want to promote goodwill as they claim, they will find another spot. Only the liberal knuckleheads of the world do not get it.
