Alvin Greene Update: Indicted On Porn Charges, But Planning A Relaunch

Alvin Greene, the Democratic party’s U.S. Senate candidate from South Carolina, was indicted Friday on felony charges for showing pornography to a South Carolina college student.

That’s bad news for Greene, and Democrats generally. But all hope is not lost. Last night, according to the Columbia Free-Times, Greene gave a 23-second speech to the South Carolina Democratic Party executive committee. After the speech, a new Greene aide stood and spoke.

“I would like to say that Alvin isn’t being short with you -– my name is Georgean McConnell and I’ve been working with Alvin -– and we have a speech committee and so forth and so I didn’t want him to get into no debates tonight or anything, because it’s really not fair since he’s been very cooperative with us.”

McConnell works at the University of South Carolina School of Music in the Center for Southern African-American Music as the gospel music ambassador. She went on to describe Greene as a quick learner and a knowledgeable person.

“So I think, in a very short time, you’re going to be seeing a very different Alvin Greene,” she said.

Read the whole Free-Times account here. According to the AP, Greene’s opponent, incumbent Sen. Jim DeMint, has raised more than $3 million.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Supporting Greene is kinda like supporting empty paras….

Is it possible that a few years down the line, when most either don’t know, or have forgotten the context of this insanity, some will be able to use this to malign democrats as the party of crazy and perverted candidates.

  • certifiablylazy

Yes. Memories have the shelf life of a fart in politics these days.

That’s bad news for Greene, and Democrats generally.

Not really. His chances of winning as of the day before this announcement were 0%. They have remained at 0%. Not really bad news. I’m at a loss as to why he gets any attention.

It’s almost as if reporters would rather focus on irrelevant personalities than report the actual news!

I do not want to offend any of you but I am completely flabberghasted by some of the candidates both the GOP and the Dem nominate for election.

Yeah. So are we. Hooray for the democratic way!

Maybe he thought this made him eligible to be a senator.

I can’t take credit for this one (I saw it on TPM) but I thought it was worth passing along.

No worries, we were already offended…since 1979 at least.

Frankly, I don’t think he is any less desirable that DeMint. South Carolina has an abundance of stupid, bigoted, racists, fanatical jerks. Period.

    Speaking of a memory…
Stuart Zechman’s spirited defense of Alvin Greene’s candidacy:

“MC: Are we sure this guy isn’t engaging in some kind of postmodern socio-political performance art?”
    .
“SZ: I would watch how you speak about ordinary Americans, if I were you.
    .
“I’m not one to argue the Republican “throw the eggheads out and replace them with Real Americans” line, but if this guy turns out to be honest, I’d think hard about voting for him before voting for, say, Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh, or Blanche Lincoln, to name just a few. I’d think hard about voting for any real person over a candidate I knew would vote with the New Democrat Coalition, Michael Crowely.
    .
“If he turns out to be honest, he’ll have a quality that most of our Senators sorely lack, and that an influx of regular folk who represent (and could comprehend) the interests of ordinary people might supply. I’ll be there are a lot of folks like me who know just as well as I do that New Democrats will vote against policies that put solving our problems first over their freak ideology.
    .
“So I’d take just a little more care in how openly you mock your fellow Americans, Michael Crowley, just in case Alvin Greene turns out to be a legitimate candidate and the kind of vote in the Senate we would take any day over Jim De Mint –or any of the deficit chickenhawks who make up the Senate New Democrat Coalition.”

I also remember laughing when I read it. I liked the part where SZ compares Alvin Greene to Gary Cooper. Classic.

  • sevenoaks07

Yep. Is it the water? the Trail? I still can’t get around the fact that this man won. What does it say about the voters????

  • sevenoaks07

I don’t see this as bad news for the Dems. The guys who count votes have already ruled out a Greene victory. About Alvin: will anyone care? Anyway he must be grateful for your ironic “concern”, MS.
