Dem Slaps Pelosi, Obama in Ad

Sure, Joe Donnelly’s district went twice for George W. Bush and is rated R+2 by Cook Political Report. But in 2008 Obama won Donnelly’s South Bend district with 54% of the vote and Donnelly himself won a sophomore term with 67%. All freshmen and sophomores are nervous and many are distancing themselves from their leadership and their President. But, in this TV ad, Donnelly takes distance to a new level. The ad talks about immigration reform and how he’s against amnesty, “because nobody should ever be awarded for breaking the law,” he says. “That may not be what the Washington crowd wants, but I don’t work for them, I work for you.” As he says “Washington crowd” the camera pans left on a photo figuring most prominently President Obama on the right, then Speaker Pelosi, and way in the back House Minority Leader John Boehner.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

    Great. A drive-by smear job.
    .
How can “Washington outsiders” remain “outside” when they have to do their work “within” Washington? Please explain, somebody.

  • constantweader

Are there really a lot of scary undocumented Central Americans taking jobs away from the nice citizens of South Bend? When I checked the South Bend news, the main story about immigration was a rally against the Arizona law. Sounds like Donnelly is running against his base. Pretty smart.

“Dem Slaps Pelosi, Obama in Ad”
    .
    Jay,
    .
Are you saying that a Congressman is not allowed to have his own views on immigration and if they differ from Obama’s and Pelosi’s then he is slapping them in the face?
    .
Whatever happened to a person’s right to their own views and opinions in our Democracy.
    .
You sound a lot like the Liberals who claim that if a person disagrees with Obama’s policies then they are a Racist.
    .
    Does Liberal = Irrational
    .
If Joe Donnelly has different views on immigration then Obama and Pelosi and his views are the same as a majority of his constituents does that somehow make him a bad person?
    .
Jay your Extreme Liberal Bias is showing.

  • formerlyjames

He went “down” to the border to see for himself. Good grief. There’s a closer border to Indiana. Been there? This is the kind of cheap political pitch that does nothing but harm and the basis of it is racist. I live near the “down” border and am not so alarmed as this phony issue Notre Dame leprechaun seems to be.

  • convexhull1

Maybe we didn’t watch the same ad. This hardly “slaps” Pelosi and Obama and is hardly taking distance “to a new level.” Sure, he’s distancing himself from the unpopular establishment, but who isn’t this cycle? And Boehner is not “way in the back.” Yes, Obama is most prominent, up front and in focus. But Pelosi’s head is turned but Boehner is clearly visible. And, if you pause the ad at 19 seconds you’ll notice that his head is nearly the same size as Pelosi’s. I guess the actual ad doesn’t quite fit into the narrative that the blog author wants to tell.

    convexhull1,
    .
    Good Post
    .
I totally agree with your post.
    .
It’s amazing how many people have trouble with the truth.
It appears some people for political reasons will always read something into a story that really isn’t there.
It sometimes makes you wonder about their logic.

  • grape_crush

    But Pelosi’s head is turned…
    .
Heh. Representative Donnelly doesn’t want to piss off the current Speaker too badly.

  • http://milascurtains.wordpress.com milascurtains

You would be right , in general and without a subject,
but when election goes withing party – it is just nonsense.
When you disagree with your mom, You do not bash her on public, right, but try to solve or disagreement Inside.
When not – I would rather name you Rascal.

  • 3xfire3

    grape,
    .
“Heh. Representative Donnelly doesn’t want to piss off the current Speaker too badly.”
    .
Why not. She won’t be speaker for very much longer.

  • 3xfire3

    milascurtains,
    .
Watch the video again. There is no bashing of Obama or Pelosi in it.
    .
Joe Donnelly is running for re-election and he knows what he and the people in his district think about illegal immigration.
    .
Why would he be fool enough to not say anything about illegal immigration and then lose the election? He is fighting for re-election. This is not the time for a Congressman to be quiet about his political views.
    .
    That’s the real world.

  • grape_crush

She won’t be speaker for very much longer.
    .
Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it’s generally not a good idea to mess with someone who has that much influence either in or out of the Speaker’s chair.

  • 3xfire3

    grape,
    .
So you’re saying he should sacrifice his own re-election rather then pis* off Pelosi.
    .
    I don’t think so.

  • 3xfire3

Anyone who doesn’t agree with you and Obama is a Racist right?
    .
After all, American citizens are not allowed to have non liberal approved opinions and views or they are racist and hate the poor.
    .
Are there any more words of wisdom you wish to share with us?

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    3X,
    .
What is newsworthy is that this is far more than anybody usually goes.
    .
Also, I have not seen anybody since Christine Whitman or Arnold Schwarzenegger not march in lockstep with the party line for the Republicans.
    .
If this were, instead, a Republican breaking ranks in his own advertisement – rather than in some written policy statement or something less bold – it would be front page news.
    .
    Don’t be ridiculous about “allowed”.
    .
It is about if it is a wise decision to air your dirty laundry in public when, in six months he will have to caucus with Pelosi.
    .
Imagine if somebody did this against Gingrich when he was the ruler of the house.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“Anyone who doesn’t agree with you and Obama is a Racist right?”
    .
Anybody who treats a person who cleans out septic tanks to send money back home to his wife and children as a threat equal to that of criminals is very Xenophobic to say the least.
    .
Indiana is not very close to Mexico, and, therefore, is not much more likely to have an undocumented worker from Canada than Mexico.
    .
It is not because of Obama!
    .
If John Edwards were the president (outside of facing impeachment for cheating on his wife) treating Mexicans on the same level as violent criminals would still be very Xenophobic to say the least.
    .
It is the issue, not the color of the president.

Don’t jump the gun and open that Champagne bottle yet for a Republican majority.

    Patrick,
    .
Can you not let anyone speak for themselves? Every time I reply to someone’s post, you jump in and answer my reply. I would really love to hear what the commenters answers are. Remember you don’t learn anything when you’re talking only when you’re listening. Try it you might like it and it would be a lot less annoying to your fellow commenters.

I find right wing positions to be so lacking in reason, that I perhaps too hastily ascribe one I can think of. Racism is not a good rational but at least it is a rational. The immigration issue is bogus. It first became prominent as an address for national security after terrorist attacks, and the focus was on Mexico, where there had never been evidence of terrorist activity (spare me the drug war example). The only evidence of terrorist activity with our neighbor countries has all been Canada, most famously with the crossing to blow up LA airport, and discovery of active cells there. Not in Mexico.
    .
From that initial position the right wing has flown off into a free floating one directed entirely at Mexico. As Patrick has pointed out, and I have alluded to, Mr. Right Wing Notre Dame (yes, I know he is a Dem but he is here appealing to right wing sentiments) would do better to pay attention closer to home. I live in Texas and the Mexican immigration “problem”, aside from a few right wing areas, including where I live, has not been recognized. It is least appreciated on the border itself and the Wall is viewed with distain.
    .
But to answer you question, yes, most free floating right wing anger about Obama and immigration, I believe to be bigoted and racist, and many don’t even consciously know it.

  • 3xfire3

    formerlyjames,
    .

“But to answer you question, yes, most free floating right wing anger about Obama and immigration, I believe to be bigoted and racist, and many don’t even consciously know it.”
    .
James, you are really far out there.
    .
You probably think I am a racist. You are wrong. I hate all racism be it by whites, blacks or any other color of people.
    .
You see I have an all American family. My son-in-law is black. I have 10 beautiful grandchildren, 3 of which are bi-racial, 1 is Hispanic, 1 is Indian and 5 are white.
In our family we love people of all races. I love my grandchildren so much that I would readily get my life for any one of them.
    .
I strongly disagree with President Obama’s policies and his politics and feel they are doing major damage to our country.
    .
In the town where I live we have a population of about 15% Hispanic. Many of my best friends are Hispanic as are my children’s and grandchildren’s. But I am against illegal immigration and feel our borders should be secure and immigration should be done in an orderly legal manner. I have no problem with a guest worker program.
    .
So according to you I am a Racist and all other people who are against illegal immigration are also racist.
    .
James you need to open your mind. You are allowing yourself to be a Partisan-Ideologue.
Is that the life you really want to live? Being a hater is a terrible waste of a good life.

  • formerlyjames

3x, my reference to possible racist views by right wingers was a serious error on my part. Not because I don’t suspect it, but because it allows diversion of concrete considerations to emotional ones.
    .
What you tell me of your family is certainly to proud of, yet it does not validate and certify non-prejudicial underpinnings on your part. The fact is, I don’t know, I don’t care, and shame on me for allowing the detour.
    .
This is what I think and the basis for it. I have grown up around Mexican culture, Mexican and Mexican/American (and they are far from synonymous), and have an affection for both. Many years ago, I taught school on the Mexican border.
    .
Mexicans immigrate illegally because there is no alternative. They are simply trying to provide for themselves and their families, and that is all. Most don’t want US citizenship and hope to return to their home in Mexico. They provide services far above what they are paid for them. They are most often victimized than victimize. They present no danger. If they present some problem in the economy like taking jobs US citizens want, the market will take care of that. But many provide skills that US citizens leave alone.
    .
I am selfish. Suspected “illegals” have provided me a nice patio, 2 roofs, concrete work, tree service, and countless other services. I don’t want it to go away. There, I have revealed my mercenary motives. That’s just free enterprise to me. See, I do have some right wing attitude.

    .
    Hi.
    .
Now that formerlyjames and grape_crush have responded to your comments to them, may I?
    .
I shall assume your permission. If you tell me that I err in that, I will apologize.
    .
    1) Did you consider the possibility that when formerlyjames typed “most free floating right wing anger”, that it a) might be true, and b) would not include you?
    .
    2) While you and I might both wish for a political system wherein loudly, firmly, and consistently speaking one’s truth was the rule and a virtue, you do recognize, don’t you, that, instead, we have a poisonous system in which gamesmanship if the only means by which one can have any influence. I’m not saying that you (or I) should stop stumping for integrity, but let’s not forget the practical realities. There is a reason why this blog is called Swampland.
    .
What do you think would happen if the Dems all started being 100% honest but the Repubs did not? And if the outcome was that the Repubs would garner a super-super majority in government, do you think that would be good for this country?
    .
I expect you will be honest
