–Fourteen-year House vet Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick lost her Democratic primary last night to state Senator Hansen Clarke, who will likely carry the Detroit district in the fall. Tainted by the fraud charges that brought down her son, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, she is the fourth House incumbent to lose a primary this cycle.
—“Tough nerd” outsider Rick Snyder beat out Rep. Pete Hoekstra and AG Mike Cox for the Republican nod for governor in Michigan. He’ll take on Democrat Virg “Angry Mayor” Bernero in November. Sounds like fun.
—Jerry Moran squeaked by fellow Rep. and Tea Party fav Todd Tiahrt for the GOP Senate nod in Kansas. He’s more or less a lock to win the seat.
–A largely symbolic Missouri referendum gave a big thumbs-down to PPACA’s (AKA ObamaCare) individual mandate.
–The Senate is poised to vote on state aid legislation today. The $26.1 billion bill aims to prevent teacher layoffs and help states pick up Medicaid tabs; it’s paid for by reductions in food stamp benefits (among other things) and is projected to reduce the deficit by $1.37 billion in the next decade. Politico reports the vote hinges on Susan Collins of Maine.
–RNC Chair and professional gaffe artist Michael Steele courts foreign diplomats for reasons that escape just about everyone.
–People like to talk about a lot taxing and spending. Our colleague Barbara Kiviat wisely points out the important issue of tax expenditures.
–Senators Schumer and Feinstein aim to tinker with journalism shield laws to exclude sites like WikiLeaks from protection.
