1,000 Words: View From “The View” Edition

From our White House Photo Blog:

President Obama appeared on the ABC talk show this morning. TIME’s TV critic James Poniewozik thought it was a fluff sandwich albeit with a meaty-for-daytime-talk slice of substance salami in the middle. What was the Super Serious political take away from the interview? Snooki-Gate. There goes Darrell Issa’s summer vacation.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Our media is in such a sad state that you can learn more about national affairs from watching “The View” than from tuning into CNN, which is beyond dreadful and a waste of airtime.

  • nflfoghorn

On the program BO announced that on his birthday there’ll be a Rahm vs. Whoopi Cuss-Fest at the United Center. $1 per swear word will go to charity. That being said, donors will be limited to $100 each.

If CNN’s such a dreadful waste, what about Flox?

But, if the $ is going to eliminate the deficit, there is no limit ;)

Poniewozik (no “c”) recently made a similar, and courageous, point about CNN.

Compare the number of people watching The View with those watching Bill’O and you will see why Obama was on.

If you want to reach the people go to where they are.

I expect to see him on Oprah or Dancing with the Stars next.

We are a dumbed down country and his appearance on The View shows just how dumbed down we really are.

“about national affairs from watching “The View” than from tuning into CNN,”

    ==
Barack Obama on Thursday mostly breezed through an appearance on The View, enjoying questions about his iPod, Lindsay Lohan and the Jersey Shore.

Yeah there is that deep liberal intellect they keep telling us they have. The testosterone level of the set dropped when Obama came on stage as well.

  • nflfoghorn

SW, hope you checked out Reliable Sources’ discourse last Sunday on why African-American hosts on cable TV prime time apparently don’t mix. Carole Simpson had me LOL when she said (paraphrasing) you have to sleep with hookers to get a show.

  • newfreedomblog

Desparate people do desparate things. When you polls sink to a new all time low of 43%, the View is a necessary and evil requirement.
    .
I’m really hoping he’ll take a shot at the show “Wipeout”, that would seem to be a better description of our country’s current situation and Obama’s policies to date.

When his numbers get to W levels, call us. Otherwise, leave your ad hominems on your own blog.

  • m0mentom0ri

Rusty, why is going on the view a “evil requirement”? Is that part of Obama being the anti-Christ? Is there an ‘Evil Requirements Document’ I wasn’t CC’d on?

Above the 10 best Darryl Issa moments. Of course the best of the best is his crying when he had to pull out of the Governor’s race in CA after financing of the Gray Davis recall. Boo Hoo he went when the Terminator stepped in to run. Ahnold made him cry.
Funny thing now is that the Groponator’s approval rating is lower than Davis when he was recalled. Thank you Darryl. As always, you are a agent of nastiness.

“Compare the number of people watching The View with those watching Bill’O and you will see why Obama was on.”
    .
    Okey dokey…
    .
Neilson has them averaging 3.4 million per airing in the afternoon, almost twice what Beck is currently getting on FOX. Bill O’s doin a bit better at around 2.7 million per episode (tho only about 650k in the “money demo”, 25-54).
    .
The last time Obama was on The View it netted 6.2 million viewers.

“The testosterone level of the set dropped when Obama came on stage as well.”
    .
With leaders like Grover Norquist and Karl Rove, conservatives are in no position to bring up who has testosterone.
    .
McCain had massive courage, but at 220 years old he hasn’t had testosterone since Abe Lincoln was the president.

When GWB was president he avoided the media so much that his face was on milk cartons by 2004.
    .
Maybe getting on TV as much as possible means that you have something to say to the people and some new ideas rather than repeating the same hollow phrases like the axle of weasels connecting Iran, Al Qada and North Korea were out to get us.
    .
(Add WWII axis powers + Ronny Reagan’s “evil empire” and sound like you may have had a new idea while just borrowing from everybody else).

Speaking of “the age of nastiness”, it seems to me that conservatives feel that the proper way to address our POTUS is in angry tones.
    .
Now, I hate to say it, but here are two facts I’ve noted during my stay on this planet:
    .
    1. A long time ago, domestic help was addressed this way.
    2. Obama, has been the only president I have ever seen that was addressed this way by a person of significance (Elizabeth).

  • mikew67

…hey, let’s just listen to Hasselbeck and the failed GOP, and go back to cut taxes / cut govt that we tried for the 3 decades of the Reagan/Bush era. In fact, let’s get ANOTHER big tax cut to the wealthiest as we did in 1981 and 2001.

I mean, that worked SO well to deliver Trickle Down prosperity. Almost nobody is unemployed now. And the banks and oil companies and health insurers, heck – they POLICED THEMSELVES!!! Get government out of the WAY by golly!

    Abe Lincoln would have said;
“You can fool some of the people, ALL of the time”… ;^)

It’s obvious from the quality of comments that most people here did not watch the show. How easy to make fun of and ridicule a “womens” show.

Jon Stewart did a segment on this last night and showed how condescending much of the coverage has been. Maybe I’m crazy but I just can’t think it’s good politics to demean so many women who enjoy the show and know that he spoke to many issues we find important. Jobs, Afghanistan, race, health care.

So, go ahead and make fun, but he reached a lot of women and we vote.
