The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Oh no, not Grunwald.
    .
Can’t somebody with credibility be found to do these things?

In their war against reality, Republicans have lost yet another round as financial reform is a reality.

    Democrats:

Health Care Reform 1 point for Democrats, half of what was promised was delivered. Republicans 2 points for both keeping private insurance profits protected above patient care and keeping themselves out of this mediocre deal leaving any problems on Democrats.

Tarp II, 2 points for Democrats especially considering it’s success. Republicans 0 points.

Stimulus package Democrats 1 point, passed but far too small. Republicans 0 points since it was passed.

Financial reform Democrats 1 point. Republicans 0 points.

Immigration reform Democrats 0, Republicans 1 since it got postponed to the next congress.

    Total;

    Democrats 5

    Republicans 3

With the economy still in the toilet, we can only cross our fingers that this is going to be good enough to make it through the midterms with majorities in both houses.

Freakin’ great news Patsy. With facts like that the Dems should absolutely steamroll the repubs in the fall.
    .
You should send a memo to Gibbs.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Gibbs included in his surveys freakin morons like you who would kneel down and worship GWB because you like how he played fake pilot at the Mission Accomplished speech.
    .
Maybe Obama should have joined the Air National Guard and hid at Harvard going AWOL during wartime and you would have voted for him, too.

    Hey, Einstein,
    .
What wars were there from when he turned 18 in 1979 until he was 35 in 1996?
    .
Don’t include the Gulf War where we threw Hussein back out of a place where we didn’t forbid him to go to begin with with three days of combat.
    .
In the meantime, GWB was helping Republicans who were cheering on sending YOUR son to Vietnam while he and Cheney were hiding. (Cheney got three deferments). Dan Quayle bravely used his political connections to stay stateside and write for the Army newspaper while cheering on sending YOUR son to Vietnam.
    .
Clinton got a deferment while voting and being against the Vietnam War.
    .
Kerry served two tours of duty even though he opposed sending YOUR son to Vietnam. Brave man.
