Glenn Beck’s Latest Heresy

TIME’s Elizabeth Dias files this report:

“If you just tuned in, boy, this has got to be the weirdest damn episode you’ve ever heard on the Glenn Beck program,” Glenn Beck admitted late last night, as he took another shot at Christian social justice missions. This time he claimed that black liberation theology—theology that believes Jesus saves victims from their oppressors—forces whites to unnecessarily confess to racism and inspires the government to redistribute money from wealthy whites to victimized minorities. Because Jesus is not a victim, in Beck’s words, “Social justice isn’t in the Bible.”

However three days before the resurrection, Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, himself was tortured and hung on a cross. Beck says that even then Jesus was only a victor—“If Jesus was a victim he would have come back from the dead and made the Jews pay for what they did.” But the Jews did not kill Jesus, the Romans did. And revenge does not exactly sound like Jesus’ command to love one’s neighbor. Moreover, liberation theology does not mean Christians must be victims to be saved. Liberation theologies emerged across the globe in the 1960s to respond to social injustices, often at the hands of colonizers. Black liberation theology certainly is not the only version out there—Latin American liberation theology, Palestinian liberation theology, and Minjung liberation theology also draw attention to suffering around the world in order to find hope from a God who has suffered too.

A core Biblical command is to follow Jesus’ example of humility, not of conquering, and to show compassion for the least of those in our midst. A different commentator, the Apostle Paul, quickly sets straight Beck’s account of Christian service: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

People may not disagree with Beck, as he said last night, because he is Mormon. But many Christians will disagree with him because he insinuates Christianity is nothing but a pull-yourself-up-from-your-bootstraps spirituality and ignores the church’s long tradition of working for the plight of the powerless.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Glen Beck is not a man of deep thinking nor does he spend any time reading or educating himself.
He drifted from DJ job to DJ job, soon wearing out his welcome. He is supposed to be on medication for some sad mental problems. He does not seem to stay on them for any length of time.
    .
I guess he forgot, according to the Bible, Jesus was destined to die for our sins. How much more of a sacrifice would be called for as an example of social justice.
    .
I can’t watch him. He is too creepy. Besides being a huckster, he is an uneducated buffoon.
Like Limbaugh, he is not amusing but dangerous. He recommends and has on his show people who are racists and anti-semites. I doubt he ever reads their books.

For conservatives these days, every single issue leads to the redistribution of wealth.
    .
Freeinpa insisted a couple weeks ago that the ultimate goal of cap-and-trade legislation — you know, the idea dreamed up by Republican C. Boyden Gray and endorsed as an official campaign proposal by Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin — was to redistribute the wealth.
    .
Health care reform, they believe, is a plot to redistribute the wealth. Letting the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire as the law says, is a plot to redistribute the wealth. Etc. etc.
    .
No matter what the issue is, they think the end goal is redistribution of wealth. It’s like they’re all playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’s Socialism.

Hey Alex. I have a suggestion, take a stab at defining the principles of Black Liberation Theology, then come back and tell us what Glenn Beck has to say.

The essence of Cone’s “theory” is basically, “White People BAD, Black People GOOD”. (Kill the white crackers and their white babies).
    .
See the video in particular at 09:0 through 12:0
    .
Mr Cone believes the only way for the white people to have redemption and be saved is to “give up all those things you have and give it to the black people. You must give up all those worldly things you took from the black people”.
    .
Racism at it lowest level Ladies and Gentlemen. Mr Cone is not a Christian, he is a charlatan who is nothing short of the devil himself. And this is who Barack Obama learned from through Jeremiah Wright?

“Oh my God!! Beck’s ratings are falling……falling……falling below those of his fellow Fox News cable shows. What Joe doesn’t point out is that Glenn not only wins his time slot by over whelming percentages.
    .
“Put a different spin on it and Mr Klein, the chicken-little of TIME.com has no answers.
    .
“As the ratings show from Neilson [sic], Beck out performs any other show at the 5PM time slot. His book sales are not only through the roof, but he has had at least FIVE best selling books over the past year. And, he has the number 2 radio program [that's real funny!!!] in the USA. Any book Beck recommends for reading, even if it is a history book immediately outsells any other book when he reviews the book on his TV program.
    .
“How many best sellers have you penned Mr Klein? Oh that’s right, ONE. Yea, keep up the great work Joe Klein, one day YOU may be a record setting best seller too, just like Glenn.”
    .

    Like these facts, for example:
–Barack Obama is an American citizen.
–The government of Hawaii has confirmed this status, without question.
–Barack Obama was duly elected by a majority of the voters in a fair election.
–George Bush won the 2000 election, even though he didn’t get the most popular votes and even though post-election review by independent bodies said the vote in Florida was so close and confusing, in some cases Gore won and in some cases Bush won.
–According to the timeline of legal documents filed in the matter, the Bush administration, not the Obama administration, chose not to file criminal charges against the members of the New Black Panthers for voter intimidation.
–The New Black Panthers have no official connection to the original Black Panther movement.
–Bobby Seale, one of the founding members of the original Black Panthers movement, denounced the New Black Panthers as “xenophobic.”
–The liberal Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the New Black Panthers as a hate group.

How do those facts work for you?

    -
“Yes jcapan, you have SO much to brag about, so very much. You are simply lucky the soldiers in WWII defeated the slime we call Japanese or you would be eating kraut with the Nazis today. Worshipping Hitler as the great savior. Maybe Kim Jong Il will blow you off the map finally, finish the job that should have been completed 60 years ago. I certainly hope he does.”
    -
Then, you go and imply that what you said was racist while all the time refusing to actually admit it was racist. Or is hoping for genocide not racist in your book?

  • formerlyjames

Anything you want to justify is available in the bible. Racial injustice, slavery, war, murder, and also good things like prosperity and salvation. It is a book of fairy tales written by men for their own self-serving interests. The mormons came late to the game with their own god revelations, but with the space cadets and lost tribes outdid the christians, who don’t take kindly. It’s all written by god on stone tablets, golden tablets, and papyrus, replicated on paper and the internet. It is fun to read, and not a bad or sad thing. That belongs to those who take it seriously as the word of god.

  • sacredh

Great song FT. The whole album was good. So…as our resident expert…is Glenn as screwed up as we think he is? Personally I don’t believe anything Glenn says. • shepherdwong

OTOH, Beck is just another self-promoting cable gasbag with a relatively tiny following. Any of you Time “journalists” care to mention anything about the insane lying heresy of “virtually every Republican” and their leader in the US Congress?

“That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” McConnell told TPMDC. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.

… [the only way] your repentance can be authentic is that you give back what you took. And white people took a lot from black people.

I didn’t hear him suggest to “give up everything you have”. They guy may or may not be a lunatic, but misquoting him does not help to prove your point.

I will agree that his personal interpretation is way out there, but not more so than Pat Robertson’s statements that Haiti’s earthquake was God’s punishment for a Pact with the devil.

Even the Old Testament casts a dim view his “outlook,” if that is the appropriate phrase. Leviticus, much beloved of the Religious Right for its incendiary language about sex, is really much more concerned about honest and generous behavior, not merely between Jew and Jew, but between Jew and foreigner. An inquisitive person can learn a lot from reading, say, Leviticus 13 through Leviticus 25, paying attention to the social contract espoused therein.
    .
In essence, the history of the Jewish people was prefigured in the exodus from Egypt: from captivity to freedom, from exile to homeland. The foreigner in Israel was to be blessed because he was in a position analogous to the Jews in Egyptian captivity.
    .
Liberation theology likewise looks back the Exodus as a description of the condition of a people who is either still captive in Egypt or sojourning among foreigners in Israel; either still imprisoned, or “free” but without power.
    .
I’ve really simplified here, but that’s the gist of it.
    .
Beck does not, and does not want to, understand any of this. Many “Christians” don’t either. Too bad.

Thanks Friar Tuck. It always amazes that some members of the right try to make the Bible a political manifesto to justify their behavior through selective readings and interpretations rather than accept it as a guide or a moral compass. Taking anything out of context distorts it’s meaning, but doing it do the Bible seems like flying down the highwau to hell to me. Mixing AC/DC and the Bible…

lcky: “God helps those who helps themselves” is not a commandment, and is not biblical. The phrase is thrown around a lot as if it is the word of God. But it’s not. In fact it’s a fairly timeworn manmade phrase used often to slam those who have the deck stacked against them.

  • bentw

Don’t quote or paraphrase the bible if you hardly ever read it. So many comments here prove an alarming amount of Biblical illiteracy, unless it is intentional disinformation. For example, what the heck is wrong with telling the whole truth, that the Romans executed Jesus after being urged to do so by the Jewish leaders of the time, and that it is completely inappropriate to associate this with the Jewish people of today ?

Glenn Beck’s statements aren’t anywhere near as outrageous as the author would like them to appear. If you can’t debate the facts or principles, try to marginalize the other with side issues. I don’t see any debate here about whether it is appropriate for the *government* to administer social justice. Jesus had a lot to say about the rich who take advantage of the poor, but he asked the rich to repent and give freely, he didn’t call on the government to make things “more equal”.

If you read the Bible regularly, you also know the phrase “render unto Caesar…”

  • beachbolo

    Jesus gave His life willingly:
John 10:11, 17-18 “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Paul also wrote to the Thessalonicans:
1 Thessalonians 2:14-15 “For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

Agree with Beck or not, It’s not heresy if it’s in the Bible.

    .
I think it is very safe to say that, since it was more than one and a half millennia before the earliest signs of Democracy that any reasonable Christian would say that it makes no specific reference to anything political other than a very non-specific concept of justice and fairness wide open to interpretation.

In his “Beyond Vietnam” speech delivered at New York’s Riverside Church on April 4, 1967–a year to the day before he was murdered–King called the United States “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.”

The ones like partrick sartor who probably hasn’t read the bible in eons, pick and chose the parts to fulfill their desire to continue to pervert not only history, but the religious teachings of Christ and others in the Bible.
    .
Social Justice is a progressive term. Equal Justice is a term through out the entire Bible.
    .
The difference, the liberal progressive / socialist use of social justice in our society is to promote a “collective” mentality in all aspects of our lives including religion. Equal Justice promotes individual reponsibility, and holds us all accountable individually to simply do the right thing.
    .
The entire progressive movement is predicated on lumping everyone into a group, and to strip away our individuality. Once this is acheived, they can then dictate to each of us how we will live our lives. They will eventually, if they succeed, tell us what we can eat, when we sleep, how we practice our religion and so forth.
    .
All of Christ’s teachings despite the hoots and hollering from the left who do not have a clue about religion to begin with, are about your individual reponsibilities. What you do and how you live your individual life, not how you assimilate yourself into a group.
    .
Despite Ms Dias’ young age and immaturity, she was not able to grasp the context of what Glenn Beck was speaking about in his TV show. She has not lived life long enough to fully understand what our individual responsibilities are to God, but yet TIME.com has put her words down on this site as an authority. Simply amazing.

All of Christ’s teachings despite the hoots and hollering from the left who do not have a clue about religion to begin with, are about your individual reponsibilities.
    .
Right, which is why Christ constantly talked about looking out for the poor (as a group) and taking care of the least of my brothers and all that. It’s why Christ urged Peter to bind his followers together in a single Church, too. Individualism! You’re all on your own!
    .
And that’s also why Paul wrote letters only to individuals discussing their individual conversion. If he thought of people in groups, we would have evidence like a letter addressed to the Romans as a group, or the Thessalonians as a group, or the Galatians as a group, and so on. But no, open your Bible, and you’ll see Paul writing to individuals only. “Dear Aaron, ….”

  • 53_3

I see an ecological and evolutionary change taking place.
    .
You have a species, in this case, homo sapiens in which two populations inhabit two ecological niches:
    .
    1. A diurnal population inhabiting the Swamps, that have, in the past, rather aggressively attacked a second population
    .
    2. That second population, to avoid being heckled, laughed upon, or relentlessly corrected, has switched to a nocturnal habit, only coming out at night to drink.
    .
Resource partitioning! Next, what will selection on eyes, brain function, and smell be in the future? Will the relaxation of selective pressure lead to the fossilization of the genes that build trichromatic opsin complexes that give the likes of Rusty et al full color vision?
    .
Will their dependence on FOX lead to the fossilization of genes mapping higher brain function?
    .
And what will the increased dependence on other senses bring in the way of renewed selection pressure on the sense of smell. Will their noses become longer as new genes, born of the duplications of older ones, map for new sensory organs, with increased olfactory surface to accommodate?
    .
Who knows? But It’s certainly fertile ground for evolutionary biologists to explore…

” I’m sorry to correct you, but for the sake of Biblical Truth, I will.

“But the Jews did not kill Jesus, the Romans did.

No, the Jews DID kill Jesus, and the Romans just were the vehicles used to carry out the dirty work.

If you will remember, Pilate did not want to PUT Jesus to Death.
He gave the Jews a choice, either Barraba’s(” a murderer, or Jesus”.”

The JEWS chose Jesus to die in a murderer’s place.(therefore by their choice, they were guilty of HIS death).

So, begrudingly Pilate agreed, WASHED HIS HANDS of it, and said he found no reason to put THIS (Jesus) to death.

So, since the Jews chose…….they did in fact kill HIM.
    As prophesied…………….

In scripture, we as Christian’s are to help the poor, especially widows and orphans.

Yes dear little kevie, the Bible does speak on groups of people, but the essesnce of Christ’s teachings are for and directed to the individual. For every 1 passage you have for the collective, I can produce 100 fold addressing the individual by Christ.
    .
Just like your savior Barack Obama preaches to his choir, Christ the true savior preached to groups of individuals.
    .
The difference, Christ saw us all as individuals and called upon us to each, individually do the right thing in our lives. He didn’t advocate for the maoist collective to “pull together and feed everyone fish”.
    .
If you think for one iota that because you go to a church and pray with a group of people, that alone will get you through the pearly gates, I am afraid you will be sadly mistaken. Just because you rub shoulders with someone else sitting in a church pew is not going to gain you passage to eternity.

  • http://djtrudeau.wordpress.com djtrudeau

Here’s the biggest problem with this quoting back and forth of the Bible. For all the “expertise” being thrown around on it, the Bible doesn’t work best as a fact-checking device. Jesus lived in a very different society from ours. For all of doszap and Rusty’s talk about the Bible, I never hear any ounce of compassion. It’s all about their “war against the left”. Sure I hear it from many of the more liberal voices here as well, but they’re not wearing the Bible like a badge.

Jesus was all about finding ways to connect and help your fellow man. You’re using his religion as a way to feel falsely superior to others. This is contrary to Jesus’ commandments. You can pick out all the details you want, but this is the core of Jesus’ teachings. Maybe in your regular life things are different, but I can only go by what I see here.

On the Romans vs the Jews debate, I see a couple of disturbing threads. If we assume the Biblical passages are historically accurate, Jesus was not killed by THE JEWS. He was shanghaied into a death sentence by Jewish leadership and a number of Israelites. Every Jew didn’t show up to call for his head. Your failure to see the distinction is just the latest example of this milleniums long tradition of using the Gospels to fuel hatred.

Plus, for someone who knows the history of that region in that time, there was no tradition of freeing a prisoner like the one detailed in the Bible. We have ample documentation and records of holidays, practices, political decisions, etc from that era (both the Romans and the Israelites were excellent record keepers) and there is not a single mention of this. More likely, it was an attempt to put in a detail that would make the story more palatable to its intended Roman audience. The anit-semitism is a side effect. This sort of practice would be shunned by modern historians but to writers of that day, it was perfectly acceptable to change the story for your audience.

Sorry to rain on your parade but I have a passion for ancient history plus I’ve read the Gospels often. Even if you get certain facts straight, you’ve messed it all up in your heart.

  • jymallyn

Glen Beck is an alcoholic (regardless of whether his is currently drunk or not). Alcoholics don’t know when they are lying. (That is also why George W. Bush also believed in the existence of Saddam’s Weapons of Mass Destruction in 2003.)

Christianity, however, is based upon three lies (originally enforced by the sword and burning at the stake:
    1. Mary had a “virgin birth.” No Jewish father in the history of the culture would have believed his daughter if she said that she was “pregnant and God did it.” The bastardy of Jesus is why he is referred to as “the son of Mary” which was a cultural insult 2000 years ago. There is evidence that the biological father was a Roman soldier, which only added to the shame of Mary’s pregnancy.
    2. God told Abraham regarding the sacrifice of Isaac that child sacrifice would be prohibited. It is pointless and counter productive even though at the time of Abraham it was a barbaric practice of other cultures. Likely the rulers of those societies used child sacrifice of the commoners to keep them in place. It is very unlikely that the rulers would sacrifice their own children. Again, sacrificing a child, or any person, for the sake of sacrifice alone is pointless and stupid. MY God doesn’t work that way.
    3. Resurrection and the promise of Heaven is a lie intended to make people believe that if you accept the pointless suffering imposed by your leaders now, you will be rewarded later. Such rewards can NOT be documented, and believing in those rewards is a benchmark of the religious followers gullibility and stupidity. Besides, if you don’t believe, the rulers will execute you and keep you from questioning this lie, which only reinforces their power.

And thank you for the opportunity to p*ss off all of the fools who “believe” in Beck and the idiotic drivel coming out of his upper orifice.

  • http://djtrudeau.wordpress.com djtrudeau

Look, I don’t believe in a literal version of the Bible either, but I think you’re allowing your anger at religion to cloud your judgement of it.

    1. There is no biological evidence of anything in the Bible. You saying that shows you’re putting your faith in other sources that have no more validity.
    2. Actually sacrifice of human beings was not common in Abraham’s culture or any culture near him. I agree that the morality of this story is dated. It was by the time of Jesus too.
    3. The promise of heaven, whether you believe it or not, was to reinforce the idea that doing good and making the right moral choices matters to God, even if you get no reward on Earth. It has been twisted over time to be used in the way you describe, but that wasn’t the original intent. It’s debatable within the Gospels and Paul’s letters whether our concept of heaven is even what they were talking about (as opposed to the earth bound resurrection).

Christianity’s biggest handicap is its age. It was speaking to an older culture in a much different place than ours. Even if you don’t believe in it, the Bible laid the foundation for our current moral foundation. The idea that every human life has meaning comes from the Judeo-Christian tradition (at least in Western culture). To not appreciate this is to not understand the society it came from. It may have been used poorly used since the days it was organized by Rome, but even your moral outrage about Chistianity is based off of an ideology that spun out of it.

I have written several articles, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints speaking out against Glenn Beck. My most comprehensive is on the topic of “distributing wealth” and the Mormon/Christian view of the roll over government in our lives. It can be found here:

    http://www.regurge.net/content/christian-nation-or-why-glenn-beck-wrong

The bottom line is that Beck is a shock jock, mush like Howard Stern and should not be seen as speaking for anyone other than Fox News and himself.

Wow! My dreams have come true – a theology lesson and biblical interpretation from none other than the cats at TIME magazine! The same guys who named ol’ Adolf Hitler Man of the Year waaay back in 1938! Please give us your read on those kill the Infidel passages from the Kopran next week!

“Just like your savior Barack Obama preaches to his choir, Christ the true savior preached to groups of individuals.”
    .
The president, the better of the two and the best of his party is not in anybody’s theological terms a “savior” the GWB was to evangelicals.
    .
He kept his religion to himself and deflected false statements from the right saying that he was Muslim while not denouncing Muslims or anybody else’s religion.
    .
    He is, theologically, a non-story.
    .
Politically he is, has been and shall remain far more popular than Bush was when he ended his term since he is far better at handling problems rather than praying while the people drowned in New Orleans instead of calling up the National Guard first and praying later.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“The bottom line is that Beck is a shock jock, mush like Howard Stern and should not be seen as speaking for anyone other than Fox News and himself.”
    .
The massive difference is that Howard Stern, even when he gets political lets it be known that he is an entertainer and not the sole source of information and, for some of the stuff he has come up with over the years (which I have not heard since he got off of regular radio about four or five years ago) could make me laugh.
    .
Beck pretends he is far more than he is. Stern is a comic. I won’t defend Howard Stern, but, at least the man can make people laugh and never leads people to believe that he is a master theologian, historian or economist as beck, who is even slightly less qualified than Stern (Stern went to Boston University – a fairly conservative university) does pretend all of these things about himself.

Just when thought it was safe to say, “I never grew up around nuts like that, I grew up Catholic” along came Mel Gibson, who wants to be more Catholic than the Pope as well as engage in racism, cruelty to women, drunkenness and, of course, fathering children out of wedlock.
    .
As an atheist, nobody can say I was in the same church or house of worship with one of these nutjobs.

So the Religious Right believes that everyone with a different belief is wrong. What’s new?

  • apr2563

Although I am no longer religious, for years I donated to a religious, Christian organization that maintains shelter and access to food in every major US city. I knew they prosthelytzed to those that used their services, but I thought their work important.
However, I checked on the internet about how much of the donated money actually went to care for the needy. It was less than 20%. How Christian is that?
    .
Why do we have poverty and abused children if the great Christian majority is so giving? I guess because they really don’t believe in social justice and believe the poor are malingering.

  • keithscatch

After reading these comments I understand why so many of you hate Beck and Christians and anything that is right or holy. It is only natural to dislike what you are opposite to.
Funny thing is, that ALL Christians were once blind, lost, and without God too. We all gave our lives to Jesus and now stand on the other side that many of you all joke about.

Having never been to our side of things you are not qualified to speak about things you know not of. However, since we have all been on your side of the fence, we are qualified to speak about the goings on of that side and to compare between the two for your benefit so that you can also come over to Salvation and accept Jesus into your heart. Once you do, your eyes will be opened too and you will be able to see.

I wish you could see because you would read some of these comments and laugh and cry at the same time. The ignorance expressed here about scripture is staggering. It is one thing to read scripture from a historical point of view and another to read it from a believers point of view where the scripture actually speaks to you. But then again, you don’t know and will just have to take my word for it until you experience it yourself firsthand. I pray that you do.

Let me answer the riddle of who killed Jesus. It is right there in front of your nose. It is in fact, YOU, ME, US. WE killed Jesus. Regardless of who carried out the verdict, please understand that you and your sins are why Jesus had to die. My sins, your sins, all of humanities sins are why Jesus died. Jesus died that we might have life and life more abundantly. Because no man can enter into Heaven except through Jesus.

If you all want to discuss politics well, you have your slant on things and I have mine. We can all agree to disagree on that. However, when you start talking about Christianity, than you are talking about the one thing that matters more than your next breath of air. Without Jesus folks, you are lost and will die in your sins. I hope that you repent and ask Jesus into your life as Savior and Lord.

If you bash me, I don’t care. I am only the messenger.

  • mothzilla

This discussion is never going anywhere. Religious indoctrination compromizes the mental competence necessary for reality based debate.

  • scot4999

Well I think I am one of the few here that actually went back and read Becks words. I dont see how he is wrong. I do see how Alex is wrong in his reading of the Bible.

Glen is pointing out that Liberation teaching teaches that Jesus died for only the victims. But the bible teaches he dies for all men. The point Glen is making is that Jesus wasnt a victim at all but chose to die for all mankind. Have chose to die and had the power not to die if he so wished and then being resurrected as planned make Jesus a victor not a victim. Big difference.

Glen then post this quote: Straight from Cone: “Black theology refuses to accept a god who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community… If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill gods who do not belong to the black community.”

If God is not for Blacks and against white is the kind of distorted christian teaching Glen is attacking here, with good cause.

As christian we are to follow Christ example and to succor the weak. We are to be charitable and compassionate. The distinction is that it has to be through our OWN free WILL. Not coercion. It it is coerced or forced then it isnt charity. So taxes and redistribution is not a christian principle it is a distorted christian teaching that Glen is again rightfully pointing out.

Ill also correct Alex on this quote, “But the Jews did not kill Jesus, the Romans did.” Sorry Alex but it was the Jews that pleaded with Pilot to kill Jesus. Pilot washed his hands after the decision indicating his innocents in the decision and all repercussion to fall on the heads of the Jews which they willingly and knowingly accepted. In that one sentence Alex loses all credibility in my mind.

Ill close with this last point of Glens seemingly missed by everyone: “For example, Cone himself has argued that the Bible is insufficient to know what social justice is and that you need Marxism to understand what Christianity means. I think I speak for most Christians when I say, God’s word is sufficient for me;”
I agree, anyone that says you have to substitute a political philosophy for the bible to understand their form of christian aren’t christian at all. For only the Bible is the word of God, not Marx. That should be everyones red flag right there. How Alex missed it I dont know maybe he is just trying to make Glen look bad.

    Alinskey’s Rules For Radicals
Rule #4 – Make your enemies live up to their own rules.

Ms. Dias – It has long ago become tiresome and irrelevant to hear non-believers attempt to make Christians live up to the standards of Christ Jesus. We believers are sinners and in the body of Adam, we will always fall short. You are probably are a non- believer and as such, know not of what you speak. Remember what Abraham Lincoln said of “fools speaking”.

Jesus never advocated that government redistribute the wealth of the people.

You seem to have missed the point that Barack Obama is not a Christian at all if he believes in “collective salvation” which was preached at Trinity United for the twenty years he attended. That perverted doctrine was dreamed up by Communist infiltrators of the Latin American Catholic Church during the 1970s. Read Galatians 1:6-12 to learn what the Apostle Paul said about perverting the Gospel. Let Barack Hussein Obama be accursed.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
    .
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
    .
but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
    .
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.

  • 53_3

Few in the Black community ascribe to any of those beliefs.
    .
    Just for you:
    .
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

  • 53_3

    I’m handing these out today.
    .
Here are two, just for you:
    .
“Jesus never advocated that government redistribute the wealth of the people.”
    .
Your failure to work with the entire line of time earns you this one:
    .
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.*”
    .
Which brings me to this little nugget:
    .
“You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
    .
*Pay particular attention to this tidbit. This is your fate…

  • 53_3

One of the biggest single problems that you have overlooked is simply this:
    .
Only a very, very tiny portion of the Black community ascribes to these beliefs.
    .
Therefore, wrapped in the robes of Jesus, (and thus, God), you bear false witness against your neighbor.

  • 53_3

Implied also, by your use of God as a vehicle to promote wholly false witness against the Black communty, you are also violating yet another of the 10 commandments.
    .
    See 53.2
    .
See, in particular, the second half, as your fate is ascribed there…

  • keithscatch

Once again there are clueless people namely 53_3 posting scriptures that they know not what the heck they mean. Just sampling of scripture and pasting means you are not rightly dividing the word of truth.

Let me help you. Bearing false witness against your brother in no way shape or form is referring to bringing accusations against a group of people. This is a verse that specifically refers to lying about something you say your brother did/didn’t do or said or believes. Competent well read Christians who rightly divide the scripture do not use a verse out of context such as this and try to apply it to something not intended.

As for your other scripture verses. Neither of them apply to anything anyone has said here. But perhaps in your mind they fit somehow?

I will agree with other Christians who have posted on here. Beck is very factual, well read, knows a heck allot more about history than anyone on this forum or website and does a tremendous job of bringing his audience FACTS about our history. Suggesting otherwise is naive and only shows your own ignorance about our past.

Also, Beck NEVER said that ALL BLACK people believe what those moronic Black Panthers believe. I watched the show and have it recorded. Accusing him of saying this MR 53_3 means you are BEARING FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR BROTHER.

  • 53_3

    Beck is not “my brother”!
    .
The Ten Commandments mean what they mean, keithscatch. Do you why they are cast in stone as opposed to all other passages in the Bible?
    .
Unlike your attempt to excuse yourself:
    .
“Bearing false witness against your brother in no way shape or form is referring to bringing accusations against a group of people.”
    .
The reason they were cast in stone is that there are NO exceptions!
    .
“borther” can mean one or many.
    .
Nice weasel worded attempt to skip out on God because of technicalities!
    .
I would love to see you do it…

  • 53_3

If you think Beck knows history, well, let’s just put you down as DNS in the race for knowledge…

  • 53_3

    Oh, keithscatch:
    .
I don’t worship anyone who promotes hatred. You thread through the Bible to justify whatever hateful agenda you hold in your head. You are full of judgment.
    .
It seems that what you are having is what I would call either a “Golden Calf” moment or maybe i should drag out one of the other of the Ten Commandments.
    .
    Yeah. That one.
    .
The one about worshiping other gods over God…

  • 53_3

I have a nice religious organization just for you:
    .
    It’s called the “Order”.
    .
Oh, wait. Sorry, the founder of the Order was taken out of Whidbey Island in the mid ’80s…

  • 53_3

    To summarize:
    .
Though many of you think because you have read the Bible from end to end, and may even know what and where every passage is, there is one thing that God gave the common man.
    .
    The Ten Commandments.
    .
These, graven in stone, are the keys the common man and woman, who don’t have time to explore in minutiae the Bible’s many passages, a standing equal before God.
    .
For many Christians, they are the Great Equalizer that effectively prevents bloviators from disrepresenting Christianity and making it the enclave of only those who claim to know Him better.
    .
God is a very smart diety…

  • 53_3

To sell hatred for political gain under cover of God is undoubtedly a grievous crime, keithscatch.
    .
I wouldn’t try to split hairs with the Ten Commandments…

  • keithscatch

So according to you 53_3 you can say whatever you will about someone as long as they are NOT YOUR BROTHER? Wow, truth comes out now. Nice try. But God is not mocked for whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap. Jesus came to expose the deeds of people like you so that you have no excuse.

Once again you deny the obvious. You attack Beck as if he were a racist. Yet you have no proof and only cite examples where Beck shows his viewers video clips showing certain black people saying the most ungodly and racist comments I have ever heard. In your effort to villafy Beck you like other libs stretch what Beck says to mean all black people.

I have been watching his shows every night for several months now and have not one time heard him say anything racist. I have heard him say things that based on evidence is accurate although harsh. He has said harsher things about white people then I have heard him say about blacks. What I love about Beck is that he peels back the layers to show you what is happening in this country by godless, evil people who are bent on turning this REPUBLIC into a socialistic country where government takes care of us all.

The Bible I have studied for a long time doesn’t espouse the social theology that some of these marxist people are pushing at all. It is a perverted gospel and needs to be exposed for what it is. I guess the Apostle Paul would be an outcast today as well for saying, he that doesn’t work let him not eat.

Socialism doesn’t work. Never has and never will.

  • keithscatch

Got news for ya, the 10 commandments are not the only word of God. Better get used to the fact that all 66 books in the Bible are God’s word and you had better be about learning it and living it. Because if you are going to try to live by the law oh man, you are going to die by the law.

By the way, how did those stone tablets work out? Didn’t last very long huh? The great equalizer for US Christians is JESUS or Yeshua. He is our atonement before God and He took on himself all of our sins so that we might be able to stand in the awesome presence of God.

I sure hope that you have asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins and appropriate His blood over you so that you too can approach God. Otherwise it is all in vain.

  • sciamachy

“Jesus was not a victim”…? What kind of moron is Beck? If you look up the word “victim” in the dictionary, you find
    “victim (plural victims)

    1. (original sense) A living creature which is slain and offered as human or animal sacrifice, usually in a religious rite; by extension, the transfigurated body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist.
    2. Anyone who is physically harmed by another.
    3. An aggrieved or disadvantaged party in a crime (e.g. swindle.)”

So, the original sense of the word victim means a sacrifice, and Jesus is the quintessential example.

  • scot4999

where in my statements did I say all blacks or even ‘The Black’ community? I never did. THe distiction was made at the beggining that this is about people like Cone that believe in the Black liberation movement or theology.

Nice try but you FAIL at your attempts to label me a sinner. Only showing your lack of reading comprehension.

  • scot4999

Obviously missing the point he was making. The classical definition of victim isn’t the one being argued by Beck or Black Liberation. So Beck is arguing the Black Liberation definition of Victim not the dictionary version. No one claimed Jesus wasn’t killed or sacrificed, only that he chose to be and had the power to stop it. He then was resurrected thus conquering death and triumphing over it. The point Beck is making is that because of that he is a victor not a victim.

  • 53_3

    Not you, scot4999. Glenn Beck:
    .
“”Black theology* refuses to accept a god who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community…”
    .
But, you keep the Golden Calf award for supporting his statement and using God to do it!
    .
That is where you are bearing false witness!
    .
*I’ve been in the Black community for 40 years. This is patently not true! Black Liberation Theology does exist. However, only a very small percentage/i> in the Black community ascribe to ideas like that!

  • 53_3

    See 52.6. You are ridiculous!

  • 53_3

“By the way, how did those stone tablets work out? Didn’t last very long huh?”
    .
Wow. You are going to criticize God’s method of getting the message out? You should be addressing that particular question to God.
    .
First and foremost, you refused to address the symbolism in engraving those Ten Commandments in stone. There is only one meaning for that, and that is permanence and inviolability.
    .
Despite your efforts to claim Christianity for your own, you have violated at least three of the Ten Commandments.

  • 53_3

    scot4999, keithscatch:
    .
“”Black theology* refuses to accept a god who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community…
    .
    Point 1:
Glenn Beck specifically proscribes the Black community, and thus ALL Black Americans.
    .
    Point 2:
I know no god but God. I do not make or worship graven images or icons.
    .
    Point 3:
The architects of the Devil’s work are not my brothers, nor are they my neighbors. Yet, I forgive their sins. I must, as God will eventually punish Glenn Beck – and you – and that his His job, not mine!
    .
    Point 4:
Also, in attempting to ignore the span of time from the Old Testament to now, you are perverting God’s words by injecting modern political views into His writings.
    .
I feel really, really sorry for you. You are the prime example of why our forefathers were so concerned with the separation of Church and state…

  • jfroimzon

Jesus a ‘Palestinian Jew’? Palestinian? Talk about revisionist history! Isn’t it great how they slip these words/concepts little by little until people get so used to it they take it for granted… No Palestine back then, not even close… If you have a problem saying Israel, at least say Roman (part of the roman empire back then, not by choice by the way).

Besides that Beck is a lunatic who shouldn’t be taken seriously if it wasn’t for the crazies and ignorant who do take him seriously.

    Kieth,
    .
I was raised Catholic and had a very, very slow departure until I was 26 years old.
    .
So long as you consider the very first Christian Church Christian, which some very deranged people do not, I am very familiar with Christianity.
    .
As far being on the side of alcoholism, drugs, fathering children out of wedlock and those things people are born again from while in prison, rehab or other desperate situation, I have absolutely no idea what that side of the world Glen Beck is from.
    .
Sure, in college there were times I drank hard and within minutes of shot number ten was worshiping the porcelain god, but, that is how one learns to enjoy two or three drinks and not wishing to have ten in the future (on the fairly rare occasion I get around to having a drink).
    .
Being on the side of making the focus of my own life making the income needed to be a responsible husband and father, as Christians are, indeed, encouraged to do, I have spent my entire life that way.
    .
The only difference between now and when I was a practicing Catholic is that I have an extra hour every Sunday and holy day of obligation.
    .
I was, as many are, both Catholic and politically liberal. Read the parts about mercy and it is hard to imagine an FU conservative showing his face in a church unless he wants to spend half the afternoon in the confessional for the hatred of the poor he supports is hard to imagine.
    .
You, apparently, subscribe to a self centered Christianity where the goal of seeing the poor, the disadvantaged and the disabled rise is not the goal, but, that God created those people to test you on how much you can give in charity.
    .
“The poor you will always have with you.”
    .
There will be plenty of times kindness and warmth can be used no matter how much the government provides for the poor. Nobody is going to put kindness out of business, so, vote and live more selflessly and stop thinking of the needy as gods toys for testing you, personally.

    .
    Atheist indoctrination?
    .
Oh, yeah, those Atheist Tuesday schools where Atheist priests and ministers come over and teach children that that above them is the ceiling. Above the ceiling there is a blue sky and, beyond that, space with nothing else.
    .
Well, if there were an atheist indoctrination, it would take about 2 minutes per lifetime since that is the only common beliefs among atheists.
    .
I have heard of atheist organizations, but, to me, that sounds like an organization of people who do not believe in UFOs, an organization of people who believe that Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK…
    .
I so miss the smell of incense, the organ pipes with hundreds of people gathered wearing their best clothes. In reality, except for weddings, atheists have absolutely no counterpart to that.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

I would summarize it this way:

Beck did a classic conservative move by taking a tiny group of people of no significance, making them sound like the norm and then tearing down this scarecrow.

Examples of right wing inappropriate and unreasonable extrapolations:

    1) Immigrant legal and undocumented: dramatically lower probability of committing a crime than a native born American but less than 100% immune. Take these few people who are both undocumented immigrants and stomach churning evil criminals. Patch these very rare examples together. Ignore that far more crimes of the same sickening nature are being conducted by native born psychopaths within the same huge geographic range and huge time frame to create a scare. Extrapolate that immigrant or undocumented immigrant equals crime. Work people into huge hysteria. Elect many anti-immigrant Republicans.

    2) Welfare queens beginning with the Reagan era. Some master criminals who also commit bank fraud against private, non-government, for profit banks, insurance companies and banks create a long chain of forged documentation for multiple identities. Use each identity to fake poverty. Collect multiple welfare checks. This is, was and always has been a very small percentage of welfare recipients just as it is a very small percentage of insurance claims and bank loans. Elect many anti-poor Republicans.

    3) Frivolous Lawsuits, costing the most plagued community, doctors, about one quarter of one percent of their potential earnings. Find innumerable examples of this. Ignore how over that same time frame and geographic area thousands of legitimate lawsuits have won money for very legitimate injuries. Ignore how even with what may appear to be overwhelming evidence, some people authentically injured do not get a dime. Ignore how many years it takes to win a legitimate lawsuit. Elect many anti-tort law Republicans.

    4) Find obscure, obnoxious, numerically tiny group of a minority group with outrageous ideas. Ignore how obscure and numerically tiny this group is. Extrapolate that all of this minority group feels this way. Elect anti-affirmative action Republicans.

    5) Find examples of a particular minority group who have committed crimes, Extrapolate that this group actually with an unusually low crime rate is responsible for all crimes. Make propaganda films. Elect Adolph Hitler and kill six million innocent civilians, elderly women and children.

    Why is this racist?

Beck is extrapolating that this is the standard or an acceptable theology common or even heard of in the AA community when it is, in reality, totally unheard of to a vast majority of the AA and outside of the AA community. The response from the extrapolation is to not support candidates supported by the black community and to ignore very real and legitimate complaints from the AA community believing that is is a part of this plot to steal money from white people.

So, this is your standard conservative to right wing scare crow game.

Yes, I do believe that immigration laws should be enforced. No, I do not believe anybody who commits stomach churning evil and terrible crimes should ever go unpunished for any reason. No, I do not believe that all whites should hand over all of their possessions to black people. Yes, I do believe affirmative action, which is designed to be a tie breaker among two, for all practical purposes are in a dead heat for who gets a particular job to continue for some time to come.

The right wing scarecrow game is incredibly destructive and filled with false fear mongering. It, also, can raise huge profits for those willing to lie and lie more to create these fictions.

Hence, Glen Beck is worse than a whore. A whore puts out her own body. He is a pimp. He tells you that he love this country and sells it to the highest bidder to get this country F’ed.

He is a morally repulsive man.

@lcky9: The phrase is “The gods help those who help themselves.” It’s not from the Bible, but from Aesop. However, “Love your neighbor as yourself” comes from the Bible, as does “‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD” and “There are three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. By faith, we believe in God and believe all that he has revealed to us and that Holy Church proposes for our belief. By hope we desire, and with steadfast trust await from God, eternal life and the graces to merit it. By charity, we love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves for love of God. Charity, the form of all the virtues, ‘binds everything together in perfect harmony.’”

Alex, how in the world can you even feel good about this article? Listen to what Cone is saying, and what Beck is saying! You say that He ingnores the church tradition of fighting for the plight of the powerless? Why did Beck do Crime Inc? Alex, can you debunk crime Inc? Can you prove Beck’s stories wrong? So someone who goes on t.v. day in and day out promoting the ideology Jesus, is aginst church tradition? I guess going on t.v. and trying to expose corrupt people that are running our nation in the ground, who shove thousand page bills, and say that they can not tell us what is in the bills untill it is passed, That exposing the fact that our President has advisors who have a similair idealology of Cone in the whitehouse. We have a known terriorist who hangs out with the president, is not for the plight of the powerless. Alex I have some real nice ocean front property, just sighn on the line, and I will take you to Montana to show it to you.

Jesus, chose to take the place on the cross. He knew he was going to be captured, He knew what was going to happen to him, He could have ran, he was tempted by the devil to run, but he chose to take his place on the cross, and die for all of us.

If anyone said the sort of nasty things about Mormonism that Beck is not only allowed, but, I suspect, encouraged to say about my faith, he would be immediately be branded as some sort of anti-Mormon bigot. Since when did FOX become the Sunday School teacher to the nation? And who is writing their curriculum?

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

The Romans put Yashuah-Jesus-Issa on the cross at the request of the Edomites Jews [Pharisees], just like today, Zionist Christians are invading many countries and send billions to Israel at the request of Zionist Jews. The leader of the Romans in Palestine was Herod, an Edomite Jews, just like today, Bush and Obama are Jews pretending to be Christians. Yashua-Jesus-Issa was an Israelite, he was not an Edomite Jew.
