NBC’s First Read has found a videotape of RNC Chairman Michael Steele at a Connecticut fundraiser (above). The audio’s not great but in it Steele seems to suggest that President Obama is responsible for the war in Afghanistan. “Keep in mind again, this was a war of Obama’s choosing. This was not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in,” Steele tells the crowd. “Well, if [Obama] is such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?”
Leaving aside the great Princess Bride reference (Vizzini’s advice to “Never get involved in a land war in Asia”), did Steele, um, forget that it was President Bush who invaded Afghanistan?? And since when are Republicans against the war in Afghanistan??
