The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Jay, any whispers about how “establishment” R’s are going to back her and GOTV for her …or not? Will they sit on their hands or have more TP / R infighting? Given short length of article, did editors leave anything on the cutting room floor, thus if so would you share those extra items with us, please? Thanks for your thoughts and good work.

    Definitely low hanging fruit.
    .
This statement is telling however: All of those things that I oppose, he agrees with,” she said. “So if I’m wacky, what is that?”
    .
Part of the reason for the ascendency of the Tea Party is that it is infinitely easier to talk about what your against than to talk about what you’re for. And if your actual position is a desire to completely dismantle the Federal government, it’s easier yet. You’re against EVERTYTHING!
(the fact that Tea Partiers seem equally serene while State Governments also collapse sort of spoils the illusion that they are sincere if their ‘anti-federalism’)

  • Paul-no not that one

I want to see if she can run her whole campaign without taking questions from outlets other than FNC and rightwing radio.
    .
    I’m guessing she can.

  • deconstructiva

Sarah can help. I’ll bet she can teach Angle winking and fancy pageant walking too.

  • http://elvisberg.wordpress.com Elvis Elvisberg

I agree, that was a telling quote. She seems to have memorized 4 or 5 buzzwords that she calculates will make people feel resentful and angry about governance. But that only gets you so far. Sure, some people want to end Social Security, but as President Eisenhower pointed out, “Their number is negligible and they are stupid.” I suppose that Angle’s absolute refusal to interact with non-Republican media may allow her to avoid having to spell out anything more complicated than reciting that list.
    -
She is a good embodiment of the GOP’s gleefully ignorant, conspiracy-minded id… which means that she’d be right at home with the elected officials of the Republican Party. As indicated by this story of the transition of a conspiratorial lie transitions through the GOP bloodstream, from some crazy guy’s email forward to Glenn Beck to former House Government Oversight Committee Chair Dan Burton, there’s just no difference between the leadership of the GOP, Glenn Beck, and ilikechips. (Link is here).

”She wants to privatize Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. She has no use for the departments of Energy and Education, the IRS, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Environmental Protection Agency or Planned Parenthood. She’d like to repeal the 16th Amendment, which provides for direct federal taxation, and has expressed a fondness for the 18th Amendment, which created Prohibition. She has a permit to carry a concealed .44 Magnum and brags about bringing it to campaign events. But her passion also leads her to make troublesome statements…”
    .
…a casualty of a GOP right flank gone a little haywire this year…”

    .
    Funny stuff, JNS. Thanks.

Bad news for Time magazine and other wishful thinking Democrats: Angle’s up by seven over Fairy Reid. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/nevada/election_2010_nevada_senate

  • m0mentom0ri

Doesn’t matter if she wins or loses the election, testee. She has a ’2nd amendment remedy’ if she loses.

Despite the infamously bad markets of the past ten years “She wants to privatize Social Security”, Despite the famous failings of private sector health care, she wants to privatize” Medicare and Medicaid”.

“She has no use for the department of Energy” even though we are facing climate change due to the types of energy we are using.”
    .
Despite that fact that “Angle is an art teacher Christian-school founder” “She has no use for the department of Education,”
    .
Despite teaching Art, “She has no use for.. the National Endowment for the Arts,”
    .
Despite climate change “”She has no use for.. the Environmental Protection Agency ”
    .
“She’d like to repeal the 16th Amendment, which provides for direct federal taxation, and has expressed a fondness for the 18th Amendment, which created Prohibition…She has a permit to carry a concealed .44 Magnum and brags about bringing it to campaign events.: “The nation is arming,…”So if I’m wacky, what is that?”"

The far right wing of the Republican Party is, obviously, engaged in a war against reality and, in their own bubble, reality is loosing.

Two words from Democrats to the far right wing of the Republican Party who brought us Angle for Reid to run against: Thank you.

The only two things which can cost Reid this election now is if he is found in bed with a dead woman or a live boy and, from what I have gathered, he will not be found with either.

  • newfreedomblog

“Two words from Democrats to the far right wing of the Republican Party who brought us Angle for Reid to run against: Thank you.”

    .
My oh my, what will you do when you have to eat those words and ‘ol Harry loses this November?
    .
And as for dead women or “live boys”. I know you have a penchant for the young boys so I hear, but ask ‘ol Al Gore what it is like to be caught with your pants down around your ankles.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“… but ask ‘ol Al Gore what it is like to be caught with your pants down around your ankles.”
    .
Al Gore spent 40 years with one woman.
    .
“I know you have a penchant for the young boys so I hear..”
    .
No, I go for highly intelligent women in their late 20s to mid 30s myself, so, don’t worry, though, unlike the rest of your town you won’t catch me in bed with your ugly old wife.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Well, what can one expect when she tells everybody that rusty’s sleeping white giant is only three inches and is chronically sleeping?

  • http://phd9.blogspot.com Paul Dirks

You can read up on Gore here.

    .
As far a Harry Reid goes, the more voters know, the better he’ll look and he has plenty of resources to do the educating with.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Real headline should be: woman lies for $1 Million to Enquirer.
    .
This is the same publication which claimed GWB was having an affair with Condoleezza Rice.

  • shepherdwong

What can one expect from a partisan idiot who would be thrilled to give a complete whack job a seat in the United States Senate, as long as a Democrat loses?

  • jsfox

Get back to me when a reliable, unbiased poll comes out on the NV race.

  • swissArmyBrainBETA

an important point not to miss, and plain as day. Strange I don’t hear that much among the more lengthy and complicated explanations for the ascendancy.

  • firebatfox

Sorry, JNS, but this is cocooning. You can want Harry Reid to win. You can write articles that make it sound like he’ll win, to cheer up depressed Democrats.

But he ain’t gonna win. Put that prediction in the bank right now.

  • 3xfire3

    firebatfox,
    .
Good Post. Your comments are right on.
    .
JNS and the rest of the Loony Left are in their dream world again. Jay writes this crap which is non current news and tries to make it look like Angle’s current positions. They are not.
    .
Reid will lose by a landslide in November and all Jay’s and the loons wishful thinking will go down in flames.

  • nflfoghorn

As unreliable as Rasmussen polls are, for her to be “up by seven” five months out means that her “lead” isn’t solid. And you know there’s only one poll that matters anyway.

  • nflfoghorn

We’ll see your bragging and raise you one scoreboard.

  • apr2563

I just finished reading a biography of Glen Beck, “Uncommon Nonsense”. The man, as you might expect, is certifiable. He has been on meds most of his life.
What is scary is that does not prevent him from being a master at selling himself as a populus. He really is purposefully uneducated and his populism makes no sense. His whole history has been one of self promotion. He just latched on to something that is better than snakeoil. The reactionary right then latched on to him followed by the Republican party.
I believe he will eventually implode. Unfortunately, his cult followers will blame it on a conspiracy.

  • nflfoghorn

Are you saying you can’t wait for his Howard Beale moment? ;)

  • 53_3

She’s sort acute, ain’t she, rusturd*?
    .
*Forgive me. The wingnut in me just had to let fly with a not-so-artful-yet-oh-so-gratuitous insult…

  • 3xfire3

    Apr,
    .
If you want to really know who Beck is read one of his books.
    .
You loons on the Left always amaze me. You read garbage by someone with an ax to grind or someone who writes garbage about people you hate and believe it to be true.
    .
At least the blind man feeling the tail of the elephant truly believes it is a snake like animal. You are blinded by your hate for conservatives and will believe anything to fit your distorted views.
    .
Liberals are haters and that is why you will never be a significant factor in our political system.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“Liberals are haters and that is why you will never be a significant factor in our political system.”
    .
I can’t believe that you even write this on the same thread as the accusation of rape against Al Gore by the same publication, The National Enquirer, who claimed GWB was having an affair with Condoleezza Rice that we, generally, are prone to accepting just any source of information.
    .
What did and I do I think of the Enquirer’s accusation against Gore? Absurdly improbable.
    .
What do I think of the allegation of a Bush-Rice affair? It is almost as improbable as the Gore allegation due to the behavior being less aberrant.
    .
As for Beck, his own self description has been as a former drug addict who never wished to obtain higher education and went on to create conservative commentary which most reasonable observers can easily find out is filled with flaws of various kinds.
    .
If you, also, came online and said that you find the allegations against Gore as absurdly improbable, the Whitewater witch hunt of the mid-1990s a waste of tax payer money and then added on that some people may have exaggerated things about Glenn Beck, then, perhaps I would find your opinions more valuable than dog crap.
    .
In NYC leaving your dog crap out in public is $200. I think it should only be fair if you paid everybody who reads what you write $200 for reading your bent writings, but, know that you, as Republicans don’t, pay for making messes. You’d just leave it as a debt for your grandchildren to pay.
