Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

You all forgot to add the third person to your discussion.
    .

“Will Obama Be the ‘Jimmy Carter of the 21st Century’?”

    .
While Barton and Greene do make for fun discussions about our politicians and potential politicians. The real “joke” is squarely on the American people. The joke that this nutball was ever elected President of the United States of America.

    .
The reactionary Conservative meme will continue about the “Chicago thug and his shakedown”. Above is a statement from Rep congressional members and their Joe Barton like letter.
Also, the Reps real leaders, Limbaugh, Beck, Palin and the Fox echo chamber will continue the meme.

Seems to me that as far as Greene is concerned, I see this:
    .
    1. His status as a lawbreaker is not settled yet.
My position: Innocent until proven guilty. If he’s guilty, well that’s it. If he is found innocent, we’ll see…
    .
    2. He’s a bit of a trash talker, and has a somewhat checkered history, but unlike most of the right wing “heroes”, he did serve.
    .
    3. Jury is out for me, I don’t know enough of what he stands for.
    .
As for Barton, well, I look at him as a great asset for the Democratic Party. We need more GOPers to go the way of Barton.
    .
Sarah Palin started at the top and worked(?!) her way down.
    .
Barton worked his way up, and is now taking a big dive in a small pool.
    .
    Greene’s still dogpaddling…

Who knows about Alvin Greene. He could be Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or Chauncey Gardner. Let’s see what happens. I do want to thank Michael, again, for treating him with respect and bringing us some actual facts. So far, most of the information has come from snickering cable outlets.

State senator totally schooled by high school journalist. This kid was so prepared that the senator excused himself and never returned. Establishment media should take note.

    Adam:

“I sincerely apologize for the fact that” I still cannot approach that play button with my cursor. It’s like there’s a forcefield surrounding it. Weird.

Watch the tiny smile on the kid’s face as the Senator walks out.

  • Cliff

I’m right there with you, jcapan.

  • Cliff

Well it looks like I will be crossing Huppenthal off of my “to-vote-for” list.
    .
On a related note, I apologize, everyone.
    .
I apologize for my state being so chock full of stupid f–king assh*les that you can’t go three days without hearing one of them say the stupidest goddamn thing you’ve ever heard.
    .
On the bright side, you’re all probably inured to it on account of rusty’s and freeper’s posts here.

Thanks Cliff–good to hear this mysterious force is not exclusive to East Asia. I dunno–people on the internets, I read them, sometimes reluctantly, sometimes not. Actually hearing or seeing them–good googlymoogly! I was even reluctant to dial in for SZ on VS, and he’s not paid to serve up steaming divots of horsesh!t.

    .
Cliff you may want to rethink your vote. The blogger who took the video of the interview from You Tube has retracted her posting. Evidently, the video was not complete and missed some facts.
It was good the blogger retracter. Huffington Post has not updated. I wanted to make sure the retraction got passed on.

I always thought there was something odd about the Most Popular Posts on Swampland list on the front page. They didn’t seem to correlate with reality.

This post only had one comment until after 5:00 pm yesterday and now it has 13 (including this one), but it is the number one most popular. Hmmm. If I were a nicer person do you think the folks at the Swamp would make me popular too? Or, is that so high school of me?

Just wondering what the criteria for the list are… Something the editors are trying to promote? A social good to help those afflicted by the force field? Alas, didn’t work for my cursor.

  • 53_3

    Maybe to promote the newbies?
    .
I had no problem accessing the play button, either.
    .
Does that mean I got powers?

  • Ivy_B

Does that mean I got powers?
    .
I think it just means you make different choices. ;)
    .
If they want to promote the newbies, that’s fine, but then don’t call it Most Popular…

  • Cliff

Well, damn HuffPo and the blogger for getting me all riled up.

  • Cliff

Now that my glaring ignorance has been exposed, I’ve done some looking around on Huppenthal.
    .
He was one of the sponsors of the Birther legislation here in AZ, where all presidential candidates need to provide proof that they’re natural born citizens:
    http://www.azleg.gov/DocumentsForBill.asp?Bill_Number=HB2441
    .
He also voted in support of the bill that bans human-animal hybrids.
    .
Apart from that, he seems to be a pretty run-of-the-mill Republican.
    .
I’ll still vote against him, but not on account of the high school reporter.
    .
So thanks, apr, for getting me off my duff to do my homework!

  • 53_3

    I agree.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

I have no idea why I even bother responding to you, but, he is doing better than he has in months in the polls and, of course, as in the Harry Reid case, even if he were loosing, the Republicans would, most likely, succeed in finding a candidate far less electable.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

In the horse race, my least favorite part of political discussions, I think Joe Barton and Sarah Palin are the best assets the Democrats could ever ask for.

The fact that we have a two party rather than a multi-party system in the US means that candidates and parties can be voted for or voted against.

I can easily see with all of the weakness of HCR, the fact that Obama never checked to see that MMS did not improve enough during his watch, unemployment after finishing a large fall under Obama’s watch despite a stimulus package which was too weak falling at a snail’s pace, no action taken on immigration reform, financial reform watered down that people are unlikely to vote for Democrats.

However, looking at Joe Barton, the Republican stance of drill baby drill turning, oh, sht, spill baby, spill, Republican denials of climate change, Republican obstructionism, Sarah Palin’s lies about death panels, Sarah Palin’s lies about 16,500 armed IRS agents coming after us not to mention the fact that most Americans hold GWB and the Republican congress responsible for this recession and for the Iraq War, people will be voting against Republicans in many districts.

Even the ant-Democratic rhetoric is mixed. Half of the time they are calling Obama and Democrats wimps and gay and the other half of the time, as with Bob Ethridge, mean spirited thugs.

Democrats have a simple anti-Republican campaign: Republican politicians are brain dead servants to big business including the military industrial complex.

The Democratic 2010 congressional campaign looks like it will be this: look how the Republicans are dumber than ever.

“Vote for Democrats: because the other guys are morons.”

It’s a sad way to win or, at least, not to loose too many seats this year, but, it will not give anybody a good place in the history books.

“Will Obama Be the ‘Jimmy Carter of the 21st Century’?”
    .
This is yet another spin of the failed Republican spin..
    .
Will Obama Be the Napoleon Bonaparte of the 21st Century?

Ans: NO. Obama did not lose HCR, which was supposed to be his waterloo.
    .
Will Obama Be the George W Bush of the 21st Century?

Ans: NO. There can be only one failure called Dubya in the 21st century and Katrina/ 9/11 happened on his watch.
    .
Will Obama Be the ‘Jimmy Carter of the 21st Century’?

Ans: I am trying to find out what was Jimmy Carter’s Waterloo / Katrina. Was it the Iran hostage crisis? Then NO. Iran sanctions are falling in place under Obama.

  • nflfoghorn

PS – I thought calling the opposition morons or “liberal” (implying ‘moron’) was how all politicians won their seats. Removal of lobbyists’ direct influence can elevate our servants, but I guess it’s much easier to listen to the NRA (e.g.) “represent” constituents vs. actually listen to them.
    .
BTW I heard of an “iConstituent” On Demand section some congressmen have on many cable systems. Wonder how that works?
