Reid on the Rebound?

Sure, he’s a loooooooong way from, um, winning — or even being in a position to win. But he’s had a good month and his poll numbers are finally going slightly north. On the other hand, they could’ve hardly gotten worse. A webstory today from me.

Romney Defends Bain Record, Hits Obama on Economy: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have a Clue’

Mitt Romney lashed President Obama’s economic stewardship in an interview with TIME’s Mark Halperin on Wednesday, deflecting attacks on his years as a private equity executive and laying out how he hopes to take control of the economy as soon as he’s sworn in, should he defeat Obama in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

Thanks fo the story, Jay. Given Katie’s last post about Joe McGinness vs. Sarah Palin immersion journalism, did you or will you “go inside” Reid’s campaign or cover in more detail traditionally via press corps? I hope so; think of it as more “political hostile training” after your TP coverage in TN and real h-training in England …as preps for Afghanistan, of course. Also think of chances to spend evenings in casinos drinking and gambling (with sources, asking people there about Reid, etc.). Worry about the expense reports later; when you uncover a big scoop, the accountants will forgive you.
    .
As for Sue Louden, are her ties / bonding to Ensign (no, not THAT kind) hurting her in polls? Or is falling status entirely self-inflicted? Have you heard if TP candidates will run in Nov. if one doesn’t win the R nomination? Thanks for your thoughts.

Do they deduct from your paycheck for writing sentences like that?

  • deconstructiva

Not if you’re paid by the word. I didn’t catch that either. I fed that sentence into word’s spell check and it didn’t find the duplication; it usually notices errors.

  • kevin

Two wrongs don’t make a right, but maybe two haves make a whole?

  • http://www.twitter.com/jnsmall Jay Newton-Small

    I fixed.

  • deconstructiva

Kevin, in the cases of Ensign and Gibbons, do two halves fill a hole? (sorry, Jay) Then again, “Reid on the Rebound” has fewer connotations than “Ensign / Sanford / etc. on the Rebound.”
    .
Not comments here compared to Kate’s post, alas (except for spell check). Maybe many here already dismiss him as lost; I bet he’s toast too unless TP Nov. candidate splits R vote. Jay, if you wanna drive up the thread count until your Afghan coverage, you can always go back to AK and interview Sarah again (or catch her at the airport as she departs from her jet before boarding the folksy tour bus, but I digress). Actually, do you plan to, Jay? I know you caught hell here in comments over last interview / cover story, but there are new serious q.’s for you to grill her on: TP endorsements / influence, speaking fees, vacation home tax status, SarahPAC’s payments to mystery third parties, etc. (I’m done; thx for your thoughts, Jay)

This reprobate is history! The American people are now alert to the chicanery and deceit of bottom feeders like Harry Reid and he will be one of many, KICKED from the public trough! The rainbow promises of starry eyed, liberal Senators, are nothing but a hoax and our deficit is nothing but staggering. It is increasing at a rate of one billion dollars per day and these frauds continue to perpetrate the myth of “having your cake and eating it, too!” They should be run out of town on a rail!

  • nibblybits

“…our deficit is nothing but staggering…”
As long as they don’t cut their Medicare payments to you, huh?

  • earljr1

As an associate professor of surgery, my compensation is paid by the university, nibbly….sorry to disappoint you.

  • nibblybits

And the university get no federal dollars that contribute to your paycheck, earl? Why don’t you rail about that?

  • kevin

Surely no NSF funding or Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements, right?

  • kevin

OT, but relevant to recent discussions here:
    .
Nate Silver is in the process of putting together a new evaluation of polling outfits’ reliability, and it looks like Rasmussen is going to get called out for their biases.

I wonder. Is your megaphone hooked up to your crystal ball? Does it run on rechargeable batteries?
    .
    Just asking…

  • sacredh

This is the first I’ve heard that Rasmussen might be biased. Everytime the libtards see some poll numbers they don’t like, they attack the only fair and balanced polling organization out there.

  • earljr1

And exactly what does this have to do with a thirteen TRILLION dollar deficit….increasing at one billion dollars per day? Federal funding to our university for services rendered constitutes HOW much of that debt? What we deliver are services considered essential to our community, but yes indeed, we could cut them….and then listen to the liberals scream to high heaven! Your “hands out” mentality is a joke, but this staggering deficit is ANYTHING but. Reid has to go. (and will)

  • Ivy_B

    Thanks for the insight, sacred!

  • sacredh

    You’re welcome Ivy-B.

“Keep the gubmint out of my Medicare (reimbursements)!”

  • earljr1

Boy, you guys are getting desperate….talk about grasping at straws! Your “rainbow in the sky” party is going to take a beating and you are crying like girls. Blame it all on Bush and then blame it on Rassmussen…surely this cannot be right, America seeing through the charade (how dare they)

  • earljr1

And if we cut those services, nibbly, then what? Would that shut you up, or make you even MORE hysterical?

  • nibblybits

I have no problem with Medicare. I was just pointing out your hypocrisy, but you did a better job of it than I.

  • diecash1

Well earljr1, at what point will you be offering more than hot air and vitriol? It would be a refreshing change of pace for you.
    ..
Does it hurt your feelings that Rasmussen had demonstrable bias in 2000? You can continue to try to distract from that but it is a fact.
    ..
Feel free to continue ranting, raving and whining about the Democrats because it seems to be all you’re good at. I certainly hope you’re better at practicing medicine for your patients sake.

  • nibblybits

Why not, earl? You were just complaining above about our $13 trillion debt without mentioning that $5 trillion was pre-2000 and almost $6 trillion was W’s during his 2 terms (and we still continue to pay for those policies: 2 unfunded tax cuts for the rich, 2 wars whose costs he kept off the books, and the Prescription Drug Bill, all passed with a Republican Congress).
    .
Here is a simple chart to explain our future deficits to you in a way you might get:
    http://www.tnr.com/blog/jonathan-chait/75128/the-stigmatization-bush-blaming

  • earljr1

OF COURSE you have no problems with medicare, but what about adding significantly to the deficit with this ill conceived HCR? You and your fellow liberals were SO excited that you failed to get an accurate accounting of its cost….now and only now, are we seeing the deceit and fraud. Reid was one of the main instigators and he will now pay the price.

  • diecash1

Don’t forget about the additional $1 to $1.2 trillion from W’s last budget deficit that was passed to Obama.
    ..

  • earljr1

There you go again, nibbly, blame it ALL on Bush…somehow, I JUST knew that was coming. Do you dreamers EVER assume responsibility for ANYTHING? (great job in the gulf, by the way)….or was that Bush’s fault, too?

  • nibblybits

Well, earl, you either believe that chart from the CBO or your own lyin’ eyes! I can’t help that math is not your strong point.

  • earljr1

You deliver skewed stats from a liberal rag and you are CERTAIN that it is ALL Bush’s fault. I knew that liberals were gullible, but this goes beyond reason. BTW, nibbly, my affinity for math got me admitted to medical school at age nineteen.

  • nibblybits

Then you don’t have much of an excuse to deny the reality of the repercussions of 8 disastrous years of Bush.

  • deconstructiva

I guess you cheated on your history exams, Dr. Earl, since you told april Monday the US never declared war on Germany in WWII (we did). Or are you just cranky from today’s realization that your “keep your govt. hands off my Medicare …AND my publicly funded university paycheck“ belief has some teeny tiny inconsistencies?Just don’t ponder this during operations, please.

I really have a hard time imagining you’re actually a doctor.
    .
If so, you might want to try decaf. It’ll make you less hyperactive.

  • kevin

There you go again, nibbly, blame it ALL on Bush
    .
Yes, Bush gets the blame — because it’s his godd@mn fault.
    .
Man, does anyone else remember way back when Republicans posed as the party of personal responsibility? When they said that people need to take ownership for what they did, and pay the consequences for their mistakes?
    .
Those days are long gone, I guess. Now that Bush has been out of office for sixteen months, we’re just supposed to pretend he and his administration didn’t drive this country into the sh!tter?
    .
Sorry, champ. Not going to happen. The Glorious Conservative Revolution of tax cuts and deregulation, of lashing out blindly abroad and trusting private industry not to screw us over at home — that all led us into this disaster we’re in.
    .
You’d like for us to forget what your ideology did to this great country, but we’re not going to do that. You broke it, you bought it.

  • apr2563

earljr1: Since I am once again in my Madame DeFarge mood, I have been pretty snarky today. But you really are a pompous person. You never fail to let us know you are a doctor. Your are constantly prepping for some operation. Now we know you went to medical school at 19. We have also been told you make a lot of money. Can I assume you have a beautiful wife, perfect children, and a spacious estate? Let me know. I need to know. Has your life style been featured in Town and Country?
    .
We are rarely allowed to forget your religious superiority. You have prayed for me many times. Yet you have disdain for anyone who disagrees with you and use highly unChristian language in your posts. But keep praying for the pagan, unpatriotic, Nazi/Socialists among us. It must keep you busy inbetween posting statements that are full of hyperbole and misstatements…and all that prepping.

  • earljr1

This is the greatest lark yet, a whole room of flustered chickens squawking to beat the band! It is generally known that liberals are an unkempt, grumpy lot and you have definitely proven this to be the case. What a bunch of losers. You will NEVER assume responsibility for ANYTHING and all remain ensconced in your make believe fairyland. Most people outgrow childish fantasies, but not you folks…money grows on trees, or can be printed (as much as you need) and HCR will PAY FOR ITSELF. THIRTEEN TRILLION, folks and growing by one billion per day….hello, is anyone home? Does anyone care? Of course not, this is a liberal household and we make excuses for bad stuff. (or go back to sleep)

  • earljr1

Yes, april, one VERY beautiful wife and two children…a boy and a girl. All happy, well adjusted and healthy. God IS good. Thank you for asking. I will take ANY opportunity to brag on them.

  • deconstructiva

So Doctor, since your university takes in public funds, the public helps pay your salary. Isn’t that Ayn Rand Collectivism of the highest order? This makes you a liberal parasite by your own definition, yes? So why are you still feeding off the public trough while you disparage it? Why not quit your job and go Galt already?

  • earljr1

Because someone has to train the next generation of doctors to take care of old geezers like you, decon. Our hospital complex, as well as the University itself, is privately funded and EXTREMELY well endowed, thank you. We DO treat a fairly good number of charity patients, but receive little recompense from either state or federal government. Most federal funds are for research and we are considered to be one of the countries best, in that respect.

  • kevin

Let’s see … the opinion of a random crank on the internet who’s proven he knows dickall about the economy, or the opinion of the nonpartisan CBO and a host of pre-eminent economists?
    .
    Boy. Tough call here.

  • diecash1

At the risk of being redundant, let me try this again.
    ..
earljr1, at what point will you be offering more than hot air and vitriol? It would be a refreshing change of pace for you.
    ..
apr2563 nailed you: A pompous gasbag; one that fails to admit the shortcomings of his ideology.
    ..
At what point do you plan to have an honest discussion? Maybe one without all of your arrogance and derision. Never seems to be the likely answer.

  • kevin

Most people outgrow childish fantasies, but not you folks…
    .
Did a fan of Ayn Rand just denounce the rest of us for “childish fantasies”?
    .
Go move to Somalia, Earl. It’s a glorious libertarian paradise. No government meddling at all! You’ll be truly free! You’d love it.

  • kevin

At what point do you plan to have an honest discussion? Maybe one without all of your arrogance and derision.
    .
But he uses a lot of ALL CAPS words! Doesn’t that mean he’s SERIOUS?

  • deconstructiva

So Doctor Earl, you’re mostly but not entirely private-funded (research), just nibble at the public trough instead of dive head in, fair enough. But there’s another problem. Since you keep dwelling on private funding and other money issues, how obsessed are you with money? Many folks are that way, maybe too many.
    .
The problem is combining this with your religion. Jesus clearly disdained flaunting wealth (and flaunting religious virtues too, but I digress), etc. such as command to sell your goods, give to poor, and follow Him. So how do you reconcile your self-professed faith with your obsession over money? “By the book” (Bible) these two beliefs are not compatible.
    .
There are many doctors of faith who are more interested in healing than just making money. Some volunteer in poor countries. I presume you’re NOT one of them. As apr noted, you flaunt your faith so it’s fair game. What’s more important to you, healing others (even, yes, the poor, to satisfy Jesus’ said request) or making money? Your faith or your wallet?

  • diecash1

But he uses a lot of ALL CAPS words! Doesn’t that mean he’s SERIOUS?

David Broder serious or Sarah Palin serious?
    ..
    No, seriously…….

  • earljr1

I think little kevie needs his diaper changed, now. He’s getting a little on the cranky side. (Nothing funnier than a wet, indignant chicken to brighten one’s day) ruffle those feathers, kevin and pretend you really ARE a rooster.

  • kevin

Thanks for completely disproving our assertions that you act and think like a child. That was quite impressive.

  • kevin

David Broder serious or Sarah Palin serious?
    .
Oh, Sarah Palin serious for sure. I believe the saintly Dean Broder believes capital letters are a sign of intemperance.

  • earljr1

Wrong again, decon, For six years, (during summer break) two while in college and four while I was in med school, I was part of a volunteer medical group (faith based) treating patients in Haiti and throughout central America. I learned a great deal and they (the patients) taught me even more. My surgical internship was a breeze after my experience there and it certainly prepared me for my surgical rotation in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I also volunteer at our free clinic (along with my lovely wife) and usually put in 5 to 10 hours per week. (she, considerably more)

  • maverick2k9

Boy, you guys are getting desperate….talk about grasping at straws! Your “rainbow in the sky” party is going to take a beating and you are crying like girls. Blame it all on Bush and then blame it on Rassmussen…surely this cannot be right, America seeing through the charade (how dare they)

I am going to start a t-shirt business with your funny quotes on them. To start with, how about “Just you wait until November” ? LOL

  • 3xfire3

    Earl,
    .
You state facts, the idiots want to shoot the messenger.
    .
Their level of maturity is that of a 6 year old.
Don’t let the loons, who always gang up on you, bother you. They are a bunch of losers who could not make it in the real world.
    .
This lack of accomplishment fuels their need for a hand out society.
They would all have to go back to living with their mothers like Patrick, if they could get all the free government stuff.
    .
It’s hard to argue with non achievers.

  • 3xfire3

    Earl,
    .
You are right again. The loons will reach for straws to try and prove their improvable points.
    .
The following is the supposedly damaging information from Nate Silvers Article.

“Although Rasmussen has certainly gotten a lot of things right, their high pollster rating was mostly based on their strong performance in 2004 and 2006. Their rating is likely to go down now that we’ve found their 2000 data, and are adding in the 2008 data, when their performance was mediocre”.
    .
Nate is a good poll analysis but will readily admit that he is a Liberal.
So by adding 11 year old data he going to lower Rasmussen’s current accuracy rating.
    .
If we look at Rasmussen’s accuracy over the last 3 elections, we find it to be still one of the highest of any of the polling companies. To go back to 2000 to try and bring Rasmussen’s rating down seems to be a real stretch.
    .
Kind of reminds me of the old saying “Figures don’t lie, But liars use figures”.
    .
You notice that Kevin made his post and then all the other Liberal quickly jumped on the band wagon. Notice the heard mentality. Not a lot of maturity or smarts there.

  • apr2563

We have to be kind to earljr1. He is so close to sainthood. He may lack humilty and kindness of expression but he is close to martyrdom with his good works. Mother Teresa would be shamed by his holiness.

  • kevin

Yes, 3xfire has found us out! We’re all welfare queens!
    .
And so are the 56% of Americans who voted for Obama! They’re all on the government dole! Every one of them. None of them have jobs, or families, or educations, or any kind of achievement at all!

  • kevin

I’m smart enough to know it’s spelled “herd mentality.”

  • 3xfire3

    Earl,
    .
Nice to hear of you work in Haiti. I have worked with the “Food for the Poor” organization that has done a lot of work in Haiti. You find very few Liberals who actually do any real work themselves to help other people. They sit back and want the government to do the work. Can’t be bothered to use their own money or time.
    .
As a heartless conservative let me describe my schedule yesterday. Worked at a local soup kitchen from 10:30 till 1:15. I volunteer each Wednesday to help cook and serve food to the homeless and poor people in our community.
    .
After that worked at the Church Food Pantry from 3:00 to 5:00 working orders and passing out food to needy families.
    .
Isn’t it amazing how heartless we conservatives are? We really are greedy individuals who hate poor people.

  • 3xfire3

If Earl was a Liberal all you liberals would be embracing him as the great person he is.
How many of you have worked in Haiti and are doing surgery on people who have no money.
    .
You all gang up on him and call him names, make personal attacks and try to put him down for no other reason then that he has different political views then you do.
    .
If it wasn’t for people like Earl many poor people in Haiti and in our country would die from lack of medical care.
    .
Your comments about Earl only show what a bunch of low life’s you are.
    .

  • earljr1

Thank you 3x, for the kind words. Their barbs mean nothing to me….it only exemplifies the level of frustration they are feeling. The best comedy in town is a flock of flustered liberal hens, all fluffed up and indignant. It really does make me laugh out loud. Keep up your good work here, 3x and thank you for your community service…we need more just like you. Have a great day.
