Quote of the Day

“The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.”

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

I remember a commercial up here last year trying to tell people to stop throwing oil from home-done oil changes into the gutter with a line saying, IIRC, “1 liter of oil can ruin 10,000 liters of water”.
    .
Mr Hayward, how many liters of water have you destroyed? If you were to draw a sphere around your sunk platform where the total volume of water contained in it is equivalent to the number of liters you’ve ruined, how big is that sphere? How many States could fit comfortably in that area? How many states are already in that sphere? I’m betting the number isn’t 0 to either of those last two questions.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

    Other things to consider…

“On the bright side, you’ll be able to be able to get oil for your car’s engine by squeezing it from a couple pounds of delicious jumbo shrimp.”

“On the bright side, the Gulf water isn’t the same, boring, brilliant shade of blue.”

  • square1

That’s funny. The quote reminded me of the movie The Rainmaker:

On seven prior occasions we have denied your claim in writing. We now deny it for the eighth and final time. You must be stupid, stupid, stupid.
    .
    Sincerely,
    Everett Lufkin,

I am sure the BP quote will go over about as well in front of a jury.

Mr. Hayward, I’m sorry, but the amount of dispursants you are putting into that very big ocean is huge in relation to the corral reefs and other ecology it is going to ruin.

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

BTW, how dumb does this guy think the American people are? I know he thinks Congress is stupid, and for the most if they are not idiots they are corrupt and will deny the existance of their brains for a sum of money. But the rest of us are not stupid nor do we get anything from acting that way.

Is it possible that this quote is out of context? Because that is an incredibly dumb thing to say.

    Sorry, 53_3, I forgot.

We know to ignore all scientific facts about archeology, biology, chemistry and physics since a literal reading of the bible tells us that the world is only 5,000 years old and the fossils were put there by Satan.
    .
Of course the Messiah, Ronald Reagan (not that JC guy who told us to be generous – no God loving Republican likes him anymore) told us to ignore modern Economics and the science of climate change.
    .

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

“McCain’s answer to the oil gusher: “Just build a dang wall.”"
    .
Yeah, walls always work so well like The Great Wall of China kept the entire world out of China so that they were never invaded by anybody and never colonized by places like Portugal, England or Japan and, just think of how well East Germany is doing maintaining communism with their Berlin Wall. With a wall, East Germany will always be communist…
    .
Wait…. I think there are a couple of historical errors there.
    .
Never mind. It’s a conservative idea and no more of that liberal “thinking” stuff.

    Dear Mr. Hayward,
    .
I am sorry that my septic system is leaking.
    .
But, if you think of the volume of my sewage compared to the volume of the water in the water table around your well, most of your family may survive from the e coli bacteria poisoning.

Tony…you’re a douche bag. The Gulf of Mexico isn’t an ocean. Saying something that stupid makes me wonder how you got to be CEO of anything bigger than your dad’s grocery store. How’s that leaky-oily thingy working out for ya’?

    Mr. Howard:
    .
We are very sorry to have heard that you have been bitten by an Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus). We’ve noted that you have only been injected with 30 mcg of the toxin.
    .
Under normal circumstances, we would have taken great pains to fly you by helicopter immediately to the nearest trauma center, accompanied by a fully trained EMT crew to ensure your survival.
    .
However, since 30 mcg is such a tiny, tiny fraction of your total weight, we regret to inform you that we do not feel that you have any need for immediate medical attention.
    .
    We appreciate your patronage
