Predator Drones, Paris Hilton and Comedy’s Limits

Back in 2007, comedian Sarah Silverman hosted the MTV Music Awards and told a joke about Paris Hilton going to jail. “I heard that to make her feel more comfortable in prison, the guards are going to paint the bars to look like penises,” she said. “I think it is wrong, too. I just worry she is going to break her teeth on those things.” Hilton was in the audience, and she was offended. Silverman later said she should not have told the joke, and apologized.

Earlier this year, Silverman appeared at a TED conference, and did a long routine that offended many. Silverman explained the experience recently to New York magazine.

“The bit was tied into the theme of the conference, which was ‘What the World Needs Now.’ So I say I’d like to adopt a retarded baby because I don’t have this urge to have a little version of myself to get right this time.” She stops to explain her feelings about the word retard. “I don’t like it. I think it’s a negative bummer word. Retarded, however, technically means [mentally challenged].” She continues: “So I say I’m adopting a retarded baby and I’ll be worried about who will take care of my child when I’m gone. So, solution! I’m going to adopt one with a terminal illness. Now, you’re probably thinking, what kind of person looks to adopt a terminally ill retarded child? An amazing person! I don’t see those 9/11 firefighters adopting retarded children with terminal illnesses. I’m just saying. Of course, there’s going to be the uncomfortable, inevitable question in the adoption process: Are you sure there are absolutely no cures on the horizon?”

Silverman did not apologize for the “retarded” routine. Why apologize for the Hilton joke and not this one? I don’t know. One of the great mysteries of comedy is that it is not clear where the lines should be drawn. In fact, good comedy often means that the lines are being redrawn. Which brings me to the topic of this post, Barack Obama’s “predator drone” joke at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner.

Is this joke out of line? I didn’t think so at the time, but Adam Serwer makes a good case at the American Prospect.

I suppose the relative lack of outrage has to do with whose lives were the butt of the joke — we recognize the names and faces of the American service members who died because of Bush’s nonexistent weapons of mass destruction as friends, relatives, and family members. The people who die in drone strikes are anonymous — they have no faces or names — except for the suspected terrorist targets the administration celebrates as being neutralized.

I like my comedy with edge, and . . . but . . .  still . . .  it is something to think about.

At CPAC, Romney Stresses Conservative Credentials

Three days after a trifecta of losses underlined lingering questions about his ability to win over the Republican Party’s base, Mitt Romney arrived at CPAC to allay skeptics’fears. Throughout his second bid for the GOP nomination, Romney has made his business bona fides the centerpiece of his candidacy. But on Friday, before a packed room at the annual conservative confab, he sought to emphasize the record he compiled in Massachusetts. “I was a severely conservative governor,” he told the crowd. “I know conservatism, because I have lived conservatism.”

Mired in the Sticky Politics of Health and Faith, Obama Shifts on Contraception

In the face of mounting pressure from Catholic leaders and politicians, the White House on Friday tweaked its position on contraception coverage mandates in the Affordable Care Act. Rather than require large religious institutions like Catholic colleges and hospitals to provide employees with free health insurance coverage for contraception, insurance companies themselves will have to pick up the tab.

You sure took a long while getting to the Barack Obama predactor drone joke. Not that it isn’t fun to read Sarah Silvernman penis jokes, especially ones made at the expense of Paris Hilton.

I watched Obama’s stand-up routine live, & I had the same visceral reaction that Serwer spelled out. Predator drones aren’t very funny, especially when they’re killing non-combatants, as ours do.

Besides, anything that makes me feel a little sympathetic to Hamid Karzai’s attitudes toward the American military can’t be a good thing.

  • nskk

oh come on. What if he had said, “I have 1 word for you, CIA.” would that not be funny because the CIA has spurred coups that have killed innocents.

The joke is that the President is willing go to such extreme, and unnecessary, lengths to protect his daughters from boys. That’s all it is.

  • charlieromeobravo

how about this: if it takes three days to get around to being offended by a joke and writing about it, maybe it wasn’t all that offensive to begin with. If you have to reflect on it for that long maybe you’re just looking for something to be offended by…

  • doubleang

    how is this offensive?

How many countless people have made nuclear bomb jokes? Even the simpsons had Homer Simpson re-enacting the scene from “Doctor Strangelove”, and The A-bomb killed almost exclsuively innocents.

Taking offense at this is being way way too sensitive

  • http://forgottenlord.livejournal.com forgottenlord

When I first read that joke, I was instantly transported back to West Wing where, upon giving his permission to Charlie to date his daughter, President Bartlett said: “Just remember two things: she’s 19 years old, and the 101st airborne works for me.” It’s just a standard, overprotective-father-with-too-much-power joke. He wasn’t making light of the atrocities the Predator drones have committed, he was making light of his authority as Commander-in-Chief. How is this even remotely edgy?

  • bacotawordpress

I think “the edge” in comedy is the fact that it offends somebody. The trick is not to tell the joke in earshot of somebody who would be offended.

Please, what father hasn’t joked about threatening a daughter’s (potential) date? Move your mock outrage onto more important things.

  • kbanginmotown

    Exactly!

  • nflfoghorn

Our drones kill *some* innocent people but significantly far less than other less precise weapons or, heaven forbid, actual soldiers. Never want to see innocents die but this is, after all, war.

  • Matt

Why would someone consider this joke “out of line” Just because of the Predator drone aspect, or because it involves any sort of weapon? Come on…

  • nflfoghorn

Leno was chosen because, for the most part, his comedy is inoffensive.

  • formerlyjames

I’m not outraged by the predator joke, but rather than bring a laugh, it caused me to wonder beyond the moment to the horrible civilian damage the things have rendered. My reaction was that it was not funny and slightly undignified for a President to say.

  • Jim, Foolish Literalist

Which brings me to the topic of this post, Barack Obama’s “predator drone” joke

really? You needed all that to get to this?

I get why people didn’t like this joke (myself because it acknowledged the existence of the Jonas Brothers), but I’d say it’s cause for discussion–”something to think about”– rather than instant outrage. I think we used to call it “perspective”.

  • Paul-no not that one

(myself because it acknowledged the existence of the Jonas Brothers)
    .
    See? Now THAT’S funny.

  • sevenoaks07

Happened on Saturday; this on Tuesday. Talk about timely reporting. Anything important happening?

  • formerlyjames

    Agree, very funny, Jim.

  • kevin

Seriously, how is this edgy? Every one of my friends with a daughter has made this same joke, but because we don’t have Predator drones at our disposal, we substitute references to guns, etc.

  • kevin

    Not in Michael Scherer’s world!
    .
If it didn’t come through on Drudge or TMZ, he doesn’t know about it.

  • doubleang

That said, thanks for working in the Silverman jokes

  • grape_crush

Geezus, Scherer…you sure go a long way in order to try and generate some controversy, don’t you?

Is this joke out of line?

It’s a sentiment that most fathers have about their daughters…The POTUS just has bigger weapons to mock-threaten with than I do.

  • deconstructiva

Aw c’mon Michael, nothing happening today on finance reform? You’ve posted good stuff on that. For comedy, post “1000 words” and let us write our own material. Or for taking our minds off arresting immigrants, oil spills, failed bombs and other crap, find a non sequitur youtube clip …or write a poem. Or post pix from the WHCD nerdprom (I asked Jay to do so but she didn’t).

  • nmp1

My God! You people have got to grow up! It was a standard joke about a father protecting his daughters A joke! Not unlike the tens of millions of fathers who have told the same joke with different weaponry.

And you really wonder why people don’t take journalists seriously anymore? You take yourselves serious enough for everyone.

  • rose83

Aside from the serious concerns Jim FL has raised, I didn’t see any issue.

As for MS’s off-topic query about where exactly the line is that Sarah Silverman sometimes crosses, anonymity is a key factor. Paris Hilton is a real person who was going through a difficult time, and was present in the audience. But the adoption jokes don’t center around a specific, named child. Plus it’s obvious the target of the joke is the Sarah Silverman character, not the babies.

To go further off-topic, one of the things I really like about Sarah Silverman is that she’s not upset by people who are offended by her jokes, and she doesn’t feel the need to denigrate them. She understands that free speech is a two-way street and that humour is contextual.

  • bobcn1

‘The people who die in drone strikes are anonymous…’

I know some people hunt for reasons to be outraged, but this is a real stretch. Whether drone strike targets are anonymous or not has nothing to do with what Obama said. His target (in the joke) was not anonymous. It was the Jonas Brothers (if they messed with his daughters). This is just a twist on a pretty traditional father’s joke.

It’s pretty clear that Serwer’s complaint is the use of drones. He’s just using Obama’s joke to make an unrelated point.

If you’re really that sensitive, maybe you should look for a gentler, less offensive source for your comedy. How’s about ‘comedian’Rush Limbaugh?

    Well, maybe not…

  • mc723

As the father of two girls, I’d use Predator Drones on the Jonas Brothers, and Justin Beiber, et. al., if I had them.

    Outrage!

If news is this slow, aren’t you supposed to have backup stories about some student graduating, or some charity, or some weather or environmental system. You know there is a GIANT oil cleanup going on, maybe you could be outraged at that.

This is a joke, and unless you know someone who was killed by a predator drone, I doubt you have real cause to be offended. As a dozen other posters commented, its the standard “Have a nice time out, I will be waiting here with my shotgun” joke.

  • sacredh

If a joke doesn’t offend somebody, it probably isn’t worth telling in the first place, let alone re-telling. Take “1000 Words”. Some of us go there and try to keep it light. Others post some of the most vile, offensive attempts at humor that one can imagine. Sexist, degrading filth that pulls at the very fabric of our society. If they ever post a photo of Madonna on tour wearing those terrible predator cones, I shudder to think about what sort of comments it would generate.

  • dartmouth182

This is what happens when you force journalists have blogs in the 24 hour news cycle: useless, unimportant “news”, that people wish they hadn’t read. Go back to daily/weekly newspapers and get rid of these ever-growing, fresh off your half baked mind, “instant” blogs.

  • sacredh

Bad idea. People might go back to watching tv. At least here we move our fingers around on a keyboard to complain. It’s not much of a workout, but it’s better than nothing.

  • deconstructiva

Alas, sacred, Madonna wasn’t the only one to use the cones. Art of Noise used them too in “Moments in Love”. Anne Dudley is a brilliant composer (she’s the one at the left keyboard singing what few lyrics there are) but this video is just plain weird (why I like it). Does KT like this video since it features figure skating?

  • discostu570

How about this for a rule. If you make it your business to go around drawing “the lines” around comedy, you aren’t allowed to laugh anymore.
    -
Anybody who wants to be offended by any or all of the jokes mentioned above is welcome to do so. The idea though that comedians should be taken to task for “crossing lines” is just dumb.
    -
I’m offended by the US Military’s widespread use of Predator drones and the civilian destruction it causes. I’m not offended by jokes which draw attention to that practice, in fact I praise them. In other words, if you don’t like the joke, the answer isn’t that the President should stop telling jokes, it’s that the President should stop authorizing a military practice which visits unimaginable destruction on people we’ll never know. When a joke forces people to think uncomfortable thoughts, that’s a good thing.

  • sacredh

“When a joke forces people to think uncomfortable thoughts, that’s a good thing.”
    .
Ftw. There’s nothing more gratifying than to see someone nervously laugh. It means you’ve hit a nerve and they’re thinking.

  • http://www.achievingthroughelegance.blogspot.com gabiemonster

Honestly, the world needs a little more sunshine in their life. If we can’t take a joke nowadays, everybody is going to become radicalists who take everything way too seriously and too far. We need to look at the lighter side of things, and it is so obvious that Obama was joking (so, no need to turn that smile upside down, Mr. Sewer), it’s not Sarah’s fault that Paris’sex tape got published everywhere (however, neither is its Paris’). I think joking/comedy is necessary to our lives. There wouldn’t be terms like “funny” or “sarcasm” or “parody” or “satire” because everything would just be taken literally. Everybody would just live in a world of monotone frenzies and we’ll all just stare at a wall for enjoyment.

  • http://moderate01.wordpress.com moderate01

get a freakin life – I’m sorry, but I have to speak out against the PC police on this one. The Jonas Bro’s SHOULD be bombed by predator drones, and people are way, way too sensitive. The drones themselves are inanimate objects, and people who are killed by them are killed because another human made a decision to kill them – the drones did not make the decision, they’re just things. More people are killed by shotguns every year than by drones, but do you hear anyone being offended by shotgun wedding jokes. More people are killed by cars, but do you hear people being offended by bad driver jokes. Lighten up – if you are a progressive like me then you know the price of free speech is that people have the right to offend, and as the defender of the Constitution the POTUS has an obligation to offend

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

So, it’s not as bad as the right wing comparing him to Hitler and Communists, but how can you compare the comedy of Obama to Sarah Silverman?

Silverman’s humor is about getting the reaction “holy S! Did somebody just say that! And it it was that sweet looking Jewish girl who said it! Holy F!”

A good joke is when somebody starts telling something and your mind is ready to finish the sentence with something benign, but, out of nowhere, something ridiculous comes out instead.

I think Time is looking for things to say about Obama since GWB was comedy show on legs.

Hey George Sr was an inoffensive, hard to make fun of president, too. That isn’t showing a bias towards him. You don’t have to try to make everybody laugh at all presidents equally and find as many flaws with all of them.

  • 3xfire3

It was a Joke. People who have a problem with a joke need to get a life.
    .
When the President can’t tell a joke without the PC police getting all up in arms about it something is wrong.
    .
Words are important, but being PC on everything means we can’t have an honest discussion without fear some one is going to make it look like we are anti something.
    .
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the President telling this joke. The PC Police need to get a life.

sure. but u know what wouldn’t funny? if u or ur friend were, say, the head of a militia or a serial killer. (4 lack of a better example) then a gun or a shotgun joke wouldn’t so funny. now it would be funny if obama wasn’t making such a heavy use of predator drones. even though we’re desensitized with the drones, any talk about them automatically conjures up thoughts of innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. whether ur american or not. when ur the one ordering the drones (which are quite effective compared to actual soldiers, as someone else noted), saying ud use the same measure against a boy whose only sin was to love/desire ur baby daughter is just wrong. he should have stuck to the gun argument. cuz u know, he doesn’t actually use one against people

Sarah Silverman works hard to be the most offensive comic possible. Then along comes amateurs like Obama and Joe Klein and Michael Scherer — it’s just not fair.
    .
Changing gears… predator drones are fabulous, but nothing beats one man in one plane, putting one bomb right on target. Especially if it’s a great big bomb, the mother of all bombs, a MOAB.
