Leno at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner: He’s No Obama

Our colleague Richard Zoglin files this from Saturday night’s big event:

Jay Leno was a disappointingly safe choice as host of this year’s White House Correspondents’ dinner. Still, there was some logic to it. At a time of bitter partisan rancor in Washington, the press group clearly felt no urge to risk stirring up more ill will with a real political satirist like Stephen Colbert (who skewered the Bush gang back in ’06) or a loose cannon like Wanda Sykes (who last year labeled Rush Limbaugh “the 20th hijacker” because he’s rooting for Obama to fail). You could even argue it was an ideal time for Leno to trade barbs with President Obama. Both got big promotions last year. Both ran into unforeseen problems. And both rebounded quite nicely in the end. Leno’s flailing attempt at a prime-time program on NBC was mercifully canceled, and he was awarded his old job back as Tonight show host. Obama got health care passed.

Still, the lopsided result of Saturday night’s comedy faceoff at the Washington Hilton was a little startling. Leno, the workaholic comedy pro, got bested by the stand-up neophyte onstage, Barack Obama.

Maybe you have to know the room. Obama’s material was a canny mix of self-deprecation and score settling with the various constituencies in the hall. “I may not have the star power that I once had,” he admitted, talking about his dropping approval ratings to the assembled journalists. “But in my defense, neither do all of you.” He took on old foes: John McCain “recently claimed he had never identified himself as a maverick,” said the President. “And we all know what happens in Arizona when you don’t have ID.” And new ones: “All the jokes tonight are brought to you by our friends at Goldman Sachs,” Obama said. “So you don’t have to worry. They make money whether you laugh or not.”

But it wasn’t just the material. As a stand-up comic, Obama has mastered the timing, the deadpan misdirection, the rhetorical sucker punch. He scoffed at charges that there are secret provisions in the new health care bill: “That’s ridiculous. There aren’t a few secret provisions.” (Beat.) “There are, like, hundreds.” Or his take on Congressman Eric Massa’s account of Rahm Emanuel’s temper tantrum in the locker room of the congressional gym. “He claims that Rahm started screaming obsenities at him,” said the President. “To which I say, welcome to my world.”

Maybe it was the big laughs Obama drew that unnerved Leno, because he seemed off his game from the get-go. He started at top speed, rushed his lines, seemed too tied to his notes (no Tonight show Teleprompter) and made little effort to connect with the crowd in any real sense.

Not that he could have done much with the pedestrian material. He joked about Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign (“Leave no child with a bigger behind,” he dubbed it). He went to the trunk for more John McCain-is-old jokes. (If McCain had been elected, said Leno, the dinner “could have been an early-bird special.”) The crowd seemed a step ahead of him more than once, as when Jay noted that the Louisiana oil spill may wind up being “bigger than that huge disaster they had up in Alaska.” (All together now.) “Really? Bigger than Sarah Palin?”

Leno padded out his routine with video clips, a combination of real-life blooper reels (Joe Biden forgetting the name of the movie Avatar), jokey reediting jobs (Michelle’s appeal on obesity combined with clips of Barack wolfing down burgers) and Tonight-style comedy bits, like a fake ad for trading in your kids who are failing in school, dubbed Cash for Flunkers. Among the graying band of Leno lovers on TV at 11:30 p.m., maybe. In front of the Washington’s movers and shakers — uh-uh.

Too bad. Leno may be the last exemplar of the Bob Hope-Johnny Carson tradition of mainstream, offend-no-one political humor. It’s not exactly in vogue these days — we want our satirists angry, like Jon Stewart or Bill Maher or David Letterman — but it’s a worthy tradition. Even, in a toxic and dysfunctional political climate, the sort of comedy that can defuse tensions, help to heal.

Sorry, not this year.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Making a joke about predator drones and the situation in Arizona – it’s not funny to use situations were people are killed, or where people are being deported. Obama had not much self-deprecation, mostly he insulted his critics.

Leno was just plain awful. His one good line about MSNBC soft balls was booed. He hit the press and the president and that’s not allowed.

  • apr2563

    Leno was really unfunny.
    .
Adam, besides Colbert skewering President Bush he was punishing to the assembled press. What was funny was the awkward silences and embarassing titters by the press when Colbert nailed them. Most came out very unhappy and critical of him. Later, their minds let them revise their opinion.

  • http://erieangel.wordpress.com erieangel

Leno was a poor choice for the dinner. He isn’t really very funny these days at all.

  • gysgt213

Jay was the bomb the NYPD couldn’t get to in time last nite.
    .
Leno = funny as Palin = intellectual as the MSM = journalistic integrity.
    .
Jon Stewart, Bill Maher and David Letterman are angry? Please, have you all even listened to Rush, Bill, Glenn, Sarah, all Fox News or actually paid attention at the last tea party rally you people covered like a blanket? That’s angry.
    .
As apr points out like Colbert you guys really do not want Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. You all can’t handle it.

“All the jokes tonight are brought to you by our friends at Goldman Sachs,” Obama said. “So you don’t have to worry. They make money whether you laugh or not.”

    .
Yes please elaborate Mr President. Please tell the world how much Goldman Sachs has paid to buy your Administration. Does it amount to anything Al Gore has amassed?
    .
Is your close relationship despite the libtard naysayers refusal to believe is only a precursor to the TRILLIONS of dollars that will be made on the “Carbon Credit Exchange” being set up in Chicago you are in cahoots with Goldman Sachs, Al Gore, George Soros, Van Jones, The Tides Foundation and the Joyce Foundation?
    .
I guess the lame stream media’s refusal to report and investigate this growing concern of Chicago corruption is more evidence of how far into the bag they are with this President. This will dwarf Watergate in size once it is all exposed and go down as the most corrupt event in modern American history.

Jay Leno is like a prematurely aged Bob Hope — bland and sycophantic. I wish they’d had Wanda Sykes back. I’m still laughing at, “I hope his kidneys fail.”

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

I remember about a year ago that Obama was being called humorless. About ten years ago Leno was supposedly one of the funniest men alive.

In the clips I just saw on Youtube it was Leno who bombed and Obama who had a couple of good one liners.

Frankly, even Lincoln was an example of a president known for humor, it does not tell you one way or another if the president is great or not.

Strangely enough, one of the few things conservatives have left to say about Reagan was that his jokes were funny.

Maybe a few one liners could get out the Reagan lovers. Who knows?

Leno was terrible! More than inoffensive in the clip I saw he was unamusing.

Leno should hire Obama’s WHCD writers. He needs some fresh material (“Betty White’s last performance was interrupted by John Wilkes Booth”. Really? That’s the material you brought to Washington in 2010?).

Obama was great–both the material and the delivery.

Leno looked like a guy they picked up off the street who’d never delivered a joke before. Reading from your notes like that? He’s paid for this gig, right?

And Leno is -nothing- like Carson or Hope, two consummate professionals, even when dealing with less-than-edgy material. I am sure, even if the material was bad, those two pros would have amused on timing.

I thought Sykes was pretty good last year. But the WHCD should show some guts and bring back Colbert in 2011. Now, THAT was funny!

The house gets cleaned. Every day. All day.

  • sacredh

OT (like anyone would notice), but yesterday we cut down some evergreen bushes around the house that the ice damaged this past winter. I hooked some chains up to my truck and pulled the stumps out of the ground. I accidentally ran a large splinter about 3/4 of an inch into the palm of my hand. I pulled it out but it was bleeding pretty good. I washed the blood off at the outside faucet and went into the house to get it cleaned up and bandaged. It was still bleeding.
    .
I rubbed my palms together to get blood on both of them. I showed the MIL and she asked me what happened. I said I was just outside and my palms started to bleed. I said it was stigmata. She followed me into the bathroom. I turned the water on and told her I had to take a leak and could she lend me a hand.

  • 53_3

You are relentlessly cruel to the MIL, sacred. Don’t let her watch any horror movies…

  • apr2563

And by the way, Colbert, Stewart, Letterman, and Maher aren’t angry, they just make note and chronicle the stupidity of our journalistic and political class. Too bad they don’t learn from them. But, they help keep me sane.

  • Art Pepper

OT and not nearly as important as the WHCD:

I’m reading now that the oil spill will make an energy bill less likely, because expanded drilling was going to be the GOP price for “bipartisan” support. (Which is kind of like agreeing to go on a diet, as long as chocolate fudge cake is added to the list of allowed foods.)

But now the “optics” of expanded drilling are wrong, so they probably can’t add that to the bill, so there may not be a bill.

    http://www.startribune.com/business/92583199.html

Is there any universe in which that makes any sense at all?

  • apr2563

The only one last night to take down the press was President Obama. His riff on Politico was great.

  • apr2563

That’s the kind of idiocy the press reports while ignoring the total amorality of the facts.

  • sacredh

53_3: I’m not really cruel to her just to be cruel. I just get even. Her whole problem is that her daughter divorced a minister and married me. She just can’t accept the fact that I’m not a believer. In her mind, because I don’t believe, I’m not worthy of being treated like anyone else. She’s introduced me to several people as “my daughter’s heathen husband”. Not even a name.
    .
Things have been going downhill (even further downhill) since the first week of February. I came home from working midnight and slipped on the ice in the driveway. I landed flat on my back and shoulder. I cut my hand and it knocked the breath out of me. I laid there not moving for over a minute. She saw the entire thing from her bedroom window. She never came out to see if I was hurt badly and she never said a word to my wife. She just watched from her window.
    .
When I finally got up I went inside and into the bathroom to wash my hands. Her bedroom is next to the bathroom. She said she saw me fall and when I asked her why she didn’t check to see if I was OK, she said “There’s nothing I could have done”. I reminded her that I was the only person in the house that knew CPR and that if she ever needed it…she was a dead woman….so things have been a little tense around here. My wife was furious at her for not doing anything.

53_3: I’m probably too laid back for my own good. The MIL drives me nuts because she goes to a fundamentalist church that says Obama’s the anti-Christ yada, yada, yada. She thinks it’s God’s will that she convinces me too. I’ve already blocked out Fox and all of her religious channels on the Dish. Probably for good. I don’t know why she just doesn’t accept the truce I’ve offered her hundreds of times. She’s always going to come out on the short end. She’s nasty. I’m creatively nasty. I’ve been pulling more haunted house stuff on her and she laps it up because she blames almost everything on demons.
    .
For the last month I’ve been either setting the clocks ahead or behind before I go to bed so that she either gets to church late or early every Sunday. As soon as she goes to sleep I go into her room and set the alarm for 3 or 4 am every night. I turn her crosses upside down when she goes to sleep and she thinks it’s the devil. She’s almost right. I’m sort of enjoying myself.

In the Northeast, where I spent my entire life, it’s never about politics or religion when you are working and, for NYC, there are many religions. If you ran around lecturing strangers about Christianity, they might counter your arguments with Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam or anything else. NYC is still a majority Catholic, but Catholics are not a knock-on-your-door religion.
    .
Far more than politics, which is just not discussed on the job, for the most part, nobody knows your religion or if you practice it unless they see you in that church. If not, you just keep your religion to yourself.
    .
Sure, there are houses of worship here including a few evangelicals, but, in the past five years I only once had somebody try and convince me to to go to their church. The rule of thumb in NYC is that you presume that everybody knows everything they want to know about your religion unless they ask you.
    .

Just a couple of years ago my wife, my-ex and an old girlfriend all went out together. The old girlfriend was also a best friend of theirs. I kind of got passed around like a joint at a party (in the old days). I was wild. They were nuts. My wife is a little bit vicious. That’s one of the reasons I love her. Her stories beat mine hands down any day of the week.

And here I was wondering how the comment count got so high, given the Swamp’s recent bout of narcolepsy (i.e. irrelevancy, stupefying self-absorption and tone-deafness). In any event, thanks Joanna!

  • Cliff

They are afraid that if they don’t vote Democratic they will lose all the free stuff. The Social Welfare system created primarily by Democrats have destroyed the productive lives of millions of our black citizens.

    .
    Hahahaha what?
    .
This is astonishingly ignorant. I mean, you really have to be trying hard to be this wrong about a situation.

  • Cliff

Recent bout? Is there an alternate universe Swampland that I have not been invited to?

  • ohiolib

I know you’re off-topic, sacredh, but by all means; keep posting personal stories here. They’re hilarious.

  • http://jcapan.wordpress.com jcapan

Initially, I was commenting on the quietude of the Swamp, the loss of so many regulars, and then (without any coherent segue) I transitioned to attacking the woefully inadequate work done here. There is a pretty strong correlation, no? In my defense, I’m sick as a dog–these darned kids are like petri dishes.

    Cliff,

As I said, I’m sure the truth must hurt Liberals like you. You mean well but you screw up the lives of people you try to help.
    .
That what happens to Liberal elitist. Their ideas only cause moire pain for the poor.

  • husein11

Adam, if you haven’t figured out by now that knowing the consequences, the members of the press and Hollywood are just PETRIFIED to say anything negatively or jokingly about their dear leader then you clearly are not intelligent enough to write for a junior high school newspaper. But then again you write for Time which is less sophisticated than a junior high school newspaper.

Your post doesn’t displease me. I simply consider the source and could care less. After all my comments about you are true.

Tis true Obama did a better comedy presentation than Leno (probably with people like press secretary, Gibbs, as his writer. And many would sure like to see him take that up instead of where we have him now, but I digress. My real issue is with the writer of this article who seems to think that the Leno comedy style is out of date as being too lacking in hate and mean spiritedness. As of the moment his ratings are better than cynical Letterman. And remember Ellen DeGeneres and Opra Winfrey are not exactly edgy either, and they are very popular with mainstream America. So people like Maher and Letterman (and Obama) have their fans, who enjoy the take no prisoners, one-sided hate speech of people like that. But it seems to me the writer, Sorensen, misreads the tastes of the vast majority of us. He has that right, of course, as long as we clear that up.

    3X,
    .
I would call you an Alzhiemer’s patient, but, since it is a true disease, which a relative through marriage died from I believe it would be horrible insult to her memory.
    .
Food in embarrassing food stamps or EBT card, a place in the run down, depressing and often dangerous housing projects where, except for when an occasional game of basketball or baseball breaks out, for entertainment you can get robbed, raped, killed or, much more likely, get severely depressed since you can’t find work you are qualified for… who could ask for anything more!
    .
I am not on welfare. Very briefly I was out of full time work long enough for my unemployment benefits to run out and got food stamps (EBT card). It was $50. Then, $10 per month since I am single.
    .
I am single because I do want to complete my education.
    .
Obviously you are a very lazy man just to imagine such a world where people will prefer food stamps, your cousin’s old TV, Salvation Army donated furniture and housing projects to doing ever slightly better with full time work.
    .
Obviously if you were qualified you would stay at home, eat welfare food in the projects and watch that old TV. You just hated working for a living and envy people who can get enough to survive for free.
    .
Since liberals are much harder workers and want work much more badly than conservatives do, we do not imagine “free stuff” like that even slightly attractive.
    .
In your good “Christian” ethics, you would gladly cut off benefits of all kinds to the poor until they had to steal from you to buy food and have shelter, then you would jail them and take away their children.
    .
Hence, you believe that, possibly with the exception of those supposed in-laws, you look down on minorities and believe that what they have is what they want.
    .
I can not imagine a self made man really saying the things that you say. I don’t believe you never got a ride in your limo to the train station to know where the tracks are much less grew up on the wrong side of them.
    .
Your ignorance is overwhelming 3X. I do wonder, unless you inherited it the way your man GWB did if you ever manged a lemonade stand.

“It also helps that I look more redneck than most renecks do.”
    .
I know what you mean. I look more like a Irish-Catholic-suburban- Republican than most Irish-Catholic-suburban-Republicans do. People just presume that I am moderately religious and conservative rather than a liberal atheist.
    .
I have no idea what a liberal is supposed to look like, but, all I know is that I am not often believed to look like one.
    .
Ten years ago when I was a census taker, people thought I was a cop.
    .
I guess people think that liberals atheists have horns coming out of our heads and don’t do things like marry and have children (or try hard to set your life to do so before I’m 45 or I get a college diploma, whichever happens first).

  • apr2563

53_3, Where do you suppose we go for this free “stuff”.
I could use some “stuff”. I know that many poor people, black, white and brown work 2 and 3 jobs to survive. They would probably like some of that “stuff”.
Middle Class blacks of course, not getting any “stuff”, they were free to vote based on race. I am sure they didn’t bother their silly heads with facts.
    .
They would have probably voted for McCain and Palin, if Obama hadn’t run. I am sure the next Republican can also count on the Latino vote. After all, the Republicans have such a reputation and record of tolerance. They have the Southern Strategy and now the Southwestern Strategy.
    .
Women who aren’t getting free “stuff” will also likely be pleased by the rules regarding their reproductive rights: forced sona grams that must be viewed, ok for Drs. not to inform patients of birth defects so they will not choose abortions.
    .
Gays and lesbians are all rich so they don’t get free “stuff”. Republicans wouldn’t want them getting married or adopting. I am sure gays and lesbians wish they had Republican family values. Better than free “stuff”.

Obama’s star performance got me to thinking.. I doubt Sarah Palin would ever have the cops – or the desire – to donoe of these. She’d either boycott the “lamestream media” otr else use the time to pithch er trademark dark saracams aimed at her foes. She’s not one for humor…

“Myth: People on welfare are usually black, teenage mothers who stay on ten years at a time.
Fact: Most welfare recipients are non-black, adult and on welfare less than two years at a time.
    Summary
According to the statistics, whites form the largest racial group on welfare; half of all welfare recipients leave in the first two years; and teenagers form less than 8 percent of all welfare mothers. ”

  • sacredh

    “She’s not one for humor…”
    .
Her humor is unintentional. Whether she’s getting protection from witches and demons, winking at us like a $20 hooker, fighting the good fight against “Death Panels”, publicly sparring with the teenager that knocked her daughter up, appearing with that other paragon of sanity (Michelle Bachman) or quitting job after job…Sarah is humorous. Or tragic. Or tragically humorous.
    .
I have seen the future of the republican party. Sarah’s the punchline.

  • http://theblindspotsofgod.wordpress.com lawyermommy

I watched the event and think Obama did well UNTIL he mentioned the show which is a monument to youthful depravity, “JERSEY SHORE”.
I was a bit taken aback when he mentioned the participants in that show in comparing their orange tans to that of Boehner.

I am not sure how to put this delicately… but the Jersey Shore cast is full of urban gorillas who brawl, have orgies, no apparent goals in life. Party, fist bump, appear to be driven by nothing in particular ecept alcohol, sex and fights–

The youth in this show, to me, generally epitomize the decadence so cherished and highly rated in “Reality TV”. It is trash and so it sells. It is beneath the President to mention these sorts of folks. It gives them some sort of recognition. Something they certainly do not merit. :(

Mentioning them and acknowledging these urban gorrillas was a faux pas for the President.
Yes, I know it was an all fun and barbs day but still he is President and cannot elevate these sorts of people and their nauseating antics (high ratings on TV and all) to any level by acknowledging them in anyway.

Hope he is more selective about statements he makes in order to show he is still “with the times”. “Jersey Shore” was a poor pick. Very poor.

    *Sigh*

Other than that… Obama seems to have mastered the art of these stand up comic thing. :)

As for Leno, I noticed he was sweating. He is a comic and so this should have been right up his alley. Anyway, I like Jay and he was probably just having a bad day. Oh well.

    Sacredh and Matt,
    .
Your comments about Sarah Palin only show how classless you two are.
    .
The lady has accomplished 100 times more in her life than you two low lives will ever accomplish.
    .
Your twisted hate for this woman shows why Mainstream Americans have little use for Liberals. You are elitist who have absolutely nothing to be elitist about.

  • 53_3

I can guess what 3xfire3 would say about his SIL.
    .
    He would say:
    .
Look, I’m not ignorant!* He’s okay. He’s different. Its the rest of ‘em that are on welfare!
    .
He accused me of being stuck in the past, yet, welfare reform was enacted 15 years ago and he seems to have forgotten that.
    .
He’s accused middle class Black Americans of not being able to think for themselves, and, for voting solely for race, which is highlighted by his first chestnut. I live around and with middle class Black Americans and they have told me that they will not touch the GOP because of the endemic racism. Many are conservative.
    .
He’s accused the remainder of Black Americans of doing nothing but aspiring to the dole; i.e. they are lazy, shiftless, and have no work ethic. Far from the truth. The truth is they want jobs! Many in this group are conservative. Don’t fool yourself, you will find quite a number of conservative Black Americans in this group.
    .
Black Americans are evenly bit as divided on issues of religion, culture, conduct and government as anyone else, but people like 3xfire3 cannot see it because they will not look.
    .
Anyway, I apologize for sometimes dragging people through this, and I try to minimize these kind of debates, but I think sometimes they are necessary, and hopefully, as people become less and less prone to broadcast racially motivated speech, whether they believe it themselves or not, the less I will feel compelled to do this.
    .
    This is 2010. 3xfire3 thinks it’s 1960…

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    Testing Testing
Has the Swamp closed down to liberal remarks or is it just my bad luck?

  • 53_3

If anyone has notice (they can go look!), I have yet to accuse anyone directly of racism, but I have made implications about possible ignorance.
    .
A debate a while ago with Stuart Zechman over this eventually brought me to these conclusions about that:
    .
    1. Since I cannot know someone over the internet, I cannot make a statement about who they are, unless they themselves by actions or speech clarify it.
    .
    2. Rusty is of the type that has clearly indicated that he is racist, as his links provided were from hate groups, and his speech was hate speech (the “Sleeping White Giant” rant).
    .
    3. Even given 2, I cannot know truthfully that even Rusty is a racist. The best I can do is to use observational criteria.
    .
    4. The observational criteria is that if this conduct is indistinguishable from racist speech, than I am perfectly justified in calling it racist.
    .
Now, with all that pointed out, I don’t think 3xfire3 is racist. I haven’t read hate speech from him, but I have read passages in which he has no real knowledge of the subject he writes about. This, by every definition, is ignorance.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

I was trying to get links and more info to explain to 3X that few blacks have anything to do with welfare or food stamps, but, apparently the technical division is either still asleep or gone Republican on us.

    .

    .
A self proclaimed former CEO is calling liberals elitist?
    .
    That doesn’t smell right.
    .
It smells like the pot calling the kettle black.

  • 53_3

You have to be careful, you may have words across white space that equate to IT banned words.
    .
    The filters kinda go gaga…

  • 53_3

3xfire3 is a pot that is really, really good at calling the kettle black. He always capitalizes the word ‘racist’ too.
    .
    I have no idea why…

  • 53_3

I think sacred, with a Red, White and Blue whip, she would make a great dominatrix.
    .
I always thought so. Particularly, ever since that day she was at a rally wearing that red leather jacket with boots the day before McCain had to go on air to the media to counter all the hate speech she was stirring up.
    .
If someone has that video, I’d love to see it!

  • 53_3

One more observation about the Black community:
    .
It should be noted that before Obama won the nomination, many, if not most Black Americans felt that the Democratic party took them for granted. In some cases many still do.
    .
This is the only thing 3xfire3 has said that is true during the entire debate with him.
    .
However, unfortunately for him, this observation makes my points that much stronger, and weakens his, because, as I’ve said many times, there is maybe 40% of Black Americans who are conservative.
    .
McCain was quite popular amongst them*, and the possibility of a McCain / Powell ticket in 2000 positively excited them. Many saw that as their ticket out of the Democratic party, with the driver being the one I mentioned above.
    .
Yet, given all these forces push and pulling on conservative Black Americans, only 3 percent of all Black Americans voted GOP in 2008.
    .
It points to just how much more powerful the their aversion to the endemic racism in the GOP is.
    .
*Make absolutely no mistake. It was Palin that drove Black American conservatives away. Her use of racial hatred for political gain was intense and relentless and eventually led to Powell’s condemnation of the practice, which was the final straw that broke the back of McCain’s chances to win.
    .
Kill him! Kill him! Remains forever in my mind…

  • 53_3

In addition to the commentary 39.13, I add this:
    .
Significant support for my contentions above, and against 3xfire3′s statements is the fact prior to Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of her campaign, alienating many Black Americans, they favored her 70/30 over Obama.
    .
Her husbands’ faux pas, coupled with her own, caused those numbers for Black Americans to flip 70/30 for Obama. which clearly points to the fact that the Black community as a whole is able to accurately evaluate candidates on criteria other than race!

  • 3xfire3

    Patrick,
    .
Are you and 53 brothers? You two are the most irrational of all the commenters on this site.
    .
I was pretty confident that you were the most insane person on Swampland, but after reading many of 53′s recent posts I was ready to transfer that title to him.
Now I guess I will have to give it to both of you.
You both actually win by a fairly large margin. As the doctor said about 53, I think you both are in serious need of Psychiatric help.
    .
I choose to debate sane people who are capable of rational thoughts. Neither of you qualify.

  • http://theghostoflennybruce.wordpress.com theghostoflennybruce

Leno has never been funny, ever.

With his remarks the president was apparently attempting to make up for this shortfall, and, it appears, did quite well.

Most of those commenting on this piece however imagine themselves humorous.

Such is a welcome relief from the ranters, even if the humor remains imaginary.

Ah well, one’s ceiling is another’s floor.

3xfire3: We attack politicians we don’t like and you responds with personal attacks on individual posters. You frequently whine about the “leftists liberals” on this site resorting to name calling. STFU. You’re a hypocrite and a fool. .
    And you know what?
    .
    You did it to yourself!
    .
Thanks, you encephalitic ignorant nutball. I have a hunch your relationship with your SIL is more “compartmentalized”* than you think…
    .
*This is common between many Black males and their white friends who are somewhat ignorant or worse. Mind you, these are very real friendships, as my brother in law has one such friend.
    .
I call it compartmentalized because there are very strict boundaries that define the such a friendship, with is otherwise genuine. These strict boundaries, in my brother in laws’ case is that Black women are never discussed in the context of “man talk” and nor is certain politics.
    .
Believe me, 3xfire3, I know what I am talking about!
