Financial Reform Vote–No Cloture

The Senate just failed to stop a Republican filibuster of the Financial Reform Bill. The Democrats forced the vote even though they knew the Republicans would stand together because they want “Republicans Block Financial Reform” headlines tomorrow…and also “My Opponent Backed the Bankers” ads in the fall. Republicans filibustered because they think that anything Democrats propose can be twisted into an unpopular “big government” program…and also because the GOP just can’t quit blocking things.

So both sides are very clever. I’m sure these shenanigans will do wonders for the Senate’s approval ratings, which are subterranean. You’d think it would be in everyone’s best interests to get this Wall Street Reform passed quickly, elegantly, overwhelmingly and without games, since it’s something that the American people favor by huge margins. But this Congress is one sick culture.

Romney Defends Bain Record, Hits Obama on Economy: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have a Clue’

Mitt Romney lashed President Obama’s economic stewardship in an interview with TIME’s Mark Halperin on Wednesday, deflecting attacks on his years as a private equity executive and laying out how he hopes to take control of the economy as soon as he’s sworn in, should he defeat Obama in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

Joe, don’t forget to add the kicker – Ben “Mutual of Omaha” Nelson voted no along with the R’s.

Are you, Jay, Kate, or other teammates there at the Senate?

In this case. They had good ole Ben to help them out. And Harry Reid is a wonderful leader.

I echo Karen, make them filibuster, and that should include the so -called moderate republicans , like Snowe and Porky Collins ( if she has time from her pork-barrelling )These so-called moderates think endless talking can solve problems , so make them filibuster through the night.

I was wondering how McConnell was going to top last week’s rhetoric about how a bill that ends bailouts was a bill that made bailouts a permanent feature of American life.
    .
And then he comes out and says that a motion to proceed — a motion to start debate — is actually a motion to end the debate.
    .
It’s only a matter of time before he winds up talking just like Bizarro Superman did. I mean, he’s already thinking like him.

“This debate is going to be crystallised in the Goldman case. Much of America is going to reflexively insist that Goldman’s only crime was being smarter and better at making money than IKB and ABN-Amro, and that the intrusive, meddling government (in the American narrative, always the bad guy!) should get off Goldman’s Armani-clad back. Another side is going to argue that Goldman winning this case would be a rebuke to the whole idea of civilisation – which, after all, is really just a collective decision by all of us not to screw each other over even when we can. It’s an important moment in the history of modern global capitalism: whether or not to move forward into a world of greed without limits.”

I was watching after CSPAN after the cloture vote. I saw Shelby, Dodd, and Schummer with their heads together. Now that’s not a trio I trust.

How can you sit there and tell me Congress is one sick culture after watching the GOP for the last 16 months?

    Joe,
    .
Your analysis is correct and all the above posts are wrong.
    .
Both the Democrats and Republicans want reform. The only question is will it be a Partisan Democratic bill or a Bipartisan Democratic and Republican bill.
    .
Democrats so far say “it’s their way or the highway”.
    .
Major legislation is always better if it is truly Bipartisan.
You get the best ideas from each party and usually achieve a bill that is in the best interest of the American public.
    .
The Democrats are more of the problem than the Republicans. They are in the majority but will not let the minority help write bills that are truly in the best interest of the country.
    .
This arrogance will cost them in November.

  • megatronrises

    I think you’re a bit misguided here.
    .
Democrats have a mandate from the American people – ultimately it is their job to govern. Republicans should be lending a hand, but they’re not. They have a unified front of obstruction. If they wanted to help, they would have voted yes on cloture. This would have opened debate, at which point the Republicans could have made amendments to the bill. Voting no essentially declares their intent that they don’t want anything done at all.
    .
However, that both parties are using the situation for a political show is representative of our dysfunctional congress.

  • 3xfire3

    Mega,
    .
The filibuster simply allows the Republicans to have a seat at the table.
    .
If the democrats really wanted reform, they would have already fully engaged the Republicans in the drafting of the bill.

@8.2 you HAVE to realize that both those claims are totally counter-intuitive and seemingly ridiculous right now. maybe you have some logic to support them but you just threw them out there as if they were self-evident.

  • 3xfire3

    That’s because they are.
