Obamas On The (Hiking) Trail: “Are you who I think you are? You are!”

The Asheville Citizen-Times has a nice piece about what it is like to come upon the President of the United States on a tiny trail in the Blue Ridge mountains.

“It was just a little nondescript trail that I was on, and I didn’t expect to find anybody there really, let alone the president,” [Karen Russell] said.

Russell had been hiking on the trail for about an hour, when she saw the motorcade pass below on the parkway. She thought Obama was on his way to Mount Mitchell. “And then I saw two men with little pins and ear pieces, and I thought, ‘Oh, they’re just checking out the hill to make sure no one’s going to snipe or something like that,’” she said. . . . A woman quickly walked up to Russell and asked her if it was OK for the agents to scan her with a metal detecting wand.

“They went through my pockets and my little waist pack and my camera, they checked to make sure it was a camera,” Russell said. “And then I probably went 10 feet and I couldn’t believe it. I just looked up and I said something really stupid, like ‘Are you who I think you are? You are!’”
