Why God Created The Washington Post

Our dearly departed, Karen Tumulty, makes her debut at the House of Graham with a story in the pole position on A1. The subject–a complex and contentious “endorsement derby” playing itself out in the GOP. She begins:

You might think that no sensible Republican with presidential ambitions would wander into a blood feud within the party. This year, you would be wrong. The likely contenders for the 2012 GOP nomination have been sprinkling their marquee-worthy endorsements in an unusually large number of bitter primary contests across the country.

Romney Defends Bain Record, Hits Obama on Economy: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have a Clue’

Mitt Romney lashed President Obama’s economic stewardship in an interview with TIME’s Mark Halperin on Wednesday, deflecting attacks on his years as a private equity executive and laying out how he hopes to take control of the economy as soon as he’s sworn in, should he defeat Obama in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

Thanks, Michael. deconstructiva posted a link in the Morning Reads comments. I read it and said I reflexively felt the need to comment.

    Really excellent article.

  • bobell

I subscribe to the WaPo and even read it occasionally. (I usually leave for work before it arrives or very soon after. My wife reads it regularly.) Today it arrived while I was still home, and I noticed and read KT’s article. Not that hard to spot — it was on the front page. She’s still got it, folks.

You need to register online (or buy the paper) in order to read the article. I’ve registered (Hey, it’s my local paper), and it’s hardly annoying at all. Definitely worth it to see what Our Gal Karen is up to. Long may she wave.

  • deconstructiva

Agreed, excellent article. Thanks for linking it, Michael.

  • sacredh

MS: Thanks for the article and the link. One thing I think might be missing is that since Crist is moderate and his run as an independent could result in his winning the general election, what happens if he gets repeatedly trashed by the republicans in a dirty battle? The republicans are going to pick up seats in the house and senate. I don’t doubt that for a minute. There’s also no place for moderates in the republican party. Will Crist caucus with the democrats if he wins? It could mean the difference in who controls the senate.

  • Ivy_B

Very interesting. I had not thought that far ahead.

Thanks for the link, Michael. And yes, this is the reason God created the WAPO. So I’m not coming back to them for awhile, I think, except to read Karen.

It’s interesting that KT said it was safe to endorse Rubio. Morning Joe folks (especially Joe, who does, after all, know Florida Republican politics) said this election may blow up on both Rubio and Crist, and may keep Fla from having a Republican governor, too. All this due to the emerging story about party finances.

  • sacredh

kathy, this is shaping up to be an extremely entertaining election cycle. Florida, as elsewhere, may be more about the scandals than the actual races. It could come down to who is the least tainted. I may be wrong about the clout of the Teabaggers, but I’m still of the opinion that they could do as much damage to the republicans as they can help them. A lot depends on how far to the right the republicans have to go to appease them and keep them from running their own candidates. I think it’s complete horsesh!t that the Teabaggers are anything more than the most conservative branch of the republican party.

Be careful, Michael. Inferring that God created ANYTHING, is like throwing red meat into the Lion’s cage. Just mention his holy name to these left wing loonie’s and watch the feathers start to fly. Only Sarah can agitate them more and then it really does get hilarious.

  • acameronw

Little confused on this end, Earl. Who dragged God into this? (is this about the quote from Ralph Reed? Sorry, he’s not quite God yet.)

  • 53_3

    Life above the K/T boundary…

  • deconstructiva

KT once had a regular “Why God Invented C-SPAN” feature, but I don’t know what Earl’s talking about either.

  • sacredh

It’s the same as yelling “Jesus Christ!” when you stub your toe. It’s not really a prayer. The same thing as when something surprises you and you say “Holy crap!”. It’s not about a divine turd. It’s just an expression. Let’s move on. .org.

Thanks so much for linking to this, Michael Scherer.

  • earljr1

Precisely the point, sacredh, when you and many of your cohorts use the Lord’s name, it is usually invective…it is not used for any other purpose.

  • sacredh

And that matters how? If people want to believe in a Supreme Being that’s entirely up to them. Many of us don’t. What offends some people doesn’t offend others. When MS titled this thread “Why God Created The Washington Post” it didn’t offend me in the least. I doubt if if offended anyone else either. It didn’t ruffle any feathers. It never even occurred to me that he was in any way serious about God having anything to do with the Washington Post. Or Fox News or CBN or Focus on Family.
    .
The right uses terms like socialism, libtards, liberal loons etc when talking about non conservatives. That might be a little offensive to those of us on the left, but we deal with it. It’s not important. I refer to Tea Party members as Teabaggers. Some teabaggers don’t like that. That also isn’t important. They’re just words. Believe me, we on the left have just as low an opinion of those on the right and the right does of us. The only difference is that we’re correct. ; ).

  • anon76

    @earljr1-
Way to get God on your team, that’s a pretty good “get”. Have you asked him why he let your side down so hard in 2006 and 2008?
    .
An alternative hypothesis: God is not a Republican, the Republicans are not more Godly than ‘the left’, nobody here is offended by MS’s post title (as nobody was upset by KT’s many posts with the same motif), and earljr1 is wrong about yet another topic.

  • earljr1

How picayunish of you, anon, God doesn’t pick a side in politics. He allows us mortals to duke it out among ourselves. If we happen to pick someone with no clue (see Obama) then we are left with the sorry consequences.

  • jbaustian

Sooner or later Crist will realize that, while independents can win in some races, he cannot win as an independent in Florida… Crist is just not that likeable. Not like Jeb Bush, who is supporting Rubio and can help Rubio with the voters who Crist would absolutely need if he is to stand a chance.
