2nd Prime Ministerial Debate

It’s about to start in a matter of moments. I’m at a pub, The Red Lion, across from 10 Downing Street — just about the only pub in London that’s broadcasting the debate so far as I can tell. CNN also found it extraordinarily difficult to find a pub willing to switch from the big Spanish soccer match to the debate, they’re doing stand ups from the table next to me completely coincidentally. The subject matter: foreign policy. I’ll be twittering the debate live with reax from peeps here. But, even better, follow the expert: our London bureau chief Catherine Mayer.

Romney Defends Bain Record, Hits Obama on Economy: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have a Clue’

Mitt Romney lashed President Obama’s economic stewardship in an interview with TIME’s Mark Halperin on Wednesday, deflecting attacks on his years as a private equity executive and laying out how he hopes to take control of the economy as soon as he’s sworn in, should he defeat Obama in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

Have fun, Jay and Catherine. Too bad there’s no B-Dubs there; they’d have enough TV’s to spare one for the debate. Is betting on elections allowed there? I’m serious; I don’t think Pres. ones are here, is that right, Jay? And what is the drinking game word? Are you two doing shots or beer? I’m pulling for Clegg after getting kicked around on twitter and conservative press. Go Clegg; play the Iraq card and kick their asses.

seriously jealous, Jay. I don’t suppose they let you drink – is there any decent food? Otherwise you’re sort of in an “ale, ale, everywhere, and not a drop to drink” state of being. How much of your time at TIME do you spend watching things on the tube in faraway places that you could watch on the tube in Washington? Oops, don’t want to give your overlords any ideas.

I’ll catch clips after the fact. Don’t think I can watch the whole thing.

I’m watching it now at bbc’s home page (uk site). It has cut off twice but can refresh and catch most stuff. Brown snapped at Clegg over Trident, “Get reall.” At least he didn’t say “Sod off.”

Are Jay and Catherine already getting tipsy from drinking game words?

Watched the debate. Look forward to Catherine’s Mayer’s take. It was “civilised”; the host was laid back; the questions to the point; and no clapping. That is British low key for you. The interesting stuff was after the debate. The BBC reporter interviewed the Scottish National Party (governing in Scotland), the Welsh National Party (Plaid Cymru), the Green Party, The UK Independence Party, and the BNP – a nationalist fringe Whites only crowd. The real firework cames from the people who have no hope of actually governing. Their certitude was commendable. The three major players, knowing they might actually have to govern, were circumspect.
