Obama: The Most Popular Insult In Florida

Well Charlie Crist’s latest radio ad certainly throws a healthy dose of cold water on those whispers about him switching parties:

There were never any credible reports he was mulling a flip, but musings about the Florida governor and Republican Senate hopeful taking desperate action were understandable given the brutal beating he has taken in the polls against primary challenger Marco Rubio.

Still, he has five months (the primary isn’t until August 24,) $8 million (to Rubio’s $2 million,) and ad fodder that packs a punch. This TV spot released today uses the excellent reporting of St. Pete Times/Miami Herald tag-team Adam Smith and Beth Reinhard, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that could sully Rubio’s rising star:

The main substance of the ad aside, note the image at the 0:10 mark. Trying to tie each other to Obama seems to be the name of the game down in Florida. Of course, Rubio will always have “The Hug.” Smith says these two quick hits are designed to run on either side of Crist’s ad:

Maybe they should be careful. President Obama isn’t viewed so unfavorably in the Sunshine State, and if a bitter  primary leaves the victor bloodied, Kendrick Meek could surprise him.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

Trying to tie each other to Obama seems to be the name of the game down in Florida.

Oh, that’s just for the primaries. For the general election, whoever wins will run as a ‘fiscally responsible moderate’, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find the word ‘Republican’ in any of their advertisements.

  • nflfoghorn

Rubi-con used his GOP credit card to the hilt, all the while saying he was different from most pols. Heck, I’d be happy if Charlie became an “independent” so he can shear some of Marco Polo’s votes and Meek can sneak in.

  • northpoleresident

I love this. They are both accusing the other of being nice to the first minority president in our history. “Your friends with the first black president” “or “no you are nice to our first minority president, since you hugged him.”
    .
In the future this will be as petty as when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball and all the white baseball players would do anything not to be associated with the first black major league player. Fifty years later that looks pretty silly as Jackie Robinson is a legend and those that were against him look like the clowns.

  • nflfoghorn

I imagine Rubi-con’s poll numbers are up primarily ’cause he’s not Charlie and the tea party fascists love him. Reality’s taking a little bite out of him each day, however.

@patricksartor: I was just looking at a thread from yestertday and you asked where I lived. I live in Ohio near the river. We live on a hilltop in the country. I also live next to a church parsonage. They’re Presbies and aren’t too bad. The MIL’s church are redneck looney toons. Her minister and I almost got into a fistfight the last time he came to the house. We also got into a yelling match at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago. He called me a heathen and I suggested (at high volume) that he may be familiar with the taste of male genitalia. I love it here.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

My geography of Ohio is weak, so, I am only guessing that you are not near Akron.

Two of my Uncles, originally from Queens, now live in Akron.
    ….
    They are both Republicans.

I hadn’t been there for more than twenty years until I stopped by twice this fall.

Akron is, apparently, split between Democrats and Republicans.

I am in NYC. Not too many Republicans here.

  • sacredh

I used to live very near Akron. A small town called Wadsworth. I’m 10 miles from Steubenville now. It’s east central Ohio. With the bypass they put in, we’re a bedroom community of Pittsburgh. The housing prices more than doubled here in about 8 years. Luckily, I bought my place before the bypass went in, otherwise I couldn’t have afforded the place I live in now. I’m almost at retirement age and hate to think about selling this place, but my wife and I don’t really need a 3,000 square foot house once my son moves out and I kill my MIL.

Rubio will cruise through the primary and then comfortably win in the general, bank on it. And then hopefully everyone who crowed about it being foolish to support Rubio over Crist because of Rubio’s “un-electability” (ie, politics over ideology) will feel stupid.

  • apollyon07

Yeah I doubt that Rubio, as a Hispanic American and the son of Cuban parents would have a problem with Obama being a racial minority.
    .
That is unless you subscribe to the theory of: all opposition to Obama= because he’s black.

  • sacredh

Do you really think so? Not even close?

  • sacredh

    nfl: Shakes head and laughs.

  • apollyon07

Well, comfortably can mean a lot of different things I guess. To me it means winning by 6 points or higher. I wasn’t suggesting that it’ll be as easy as the primary (notice I changed descriptors between the two in my original post), which most assuredly will be a blowout. I don’t think the outcome will ever seriously be in doubt though. The anti-Washington feeling this season is just too high for the insider to win.
    .
Nothing new has really happened with my case, thank you for asking though. The only thing new that has come up is the city sent me something in the mail about it. I’ll spare you the details (unless you want them, it’s pretty funny), but it was basically trying to trick me into admitting guilt. I couldn’t decide if I was more insulted by it or more amused. What a great use of tax dollars.

  • nflfoghorn

  • sacredh

I just talked to a friend in Florida last night and he thinks Rubio will easily beat Crist in the primary but that the general is going to be too close to call. He’s a Rubio supporter but thinks Rubio may be too conservative to win easily (if at all).

I understand completely. The night can be fun. I strained a shoulder muscle 2 weeks ago and just took two of my Vicodin ES’s a little while ago. That’s one of the great things about being middle aged and looking like a cop. The doctor asks you if 30 will be enough and then gives you a refill just in case. The last time he gave me a prescription I took less than half of them and forgot about them. I think my MIL scarfed the rest down.

  • nflfoghorn

My three overweight cats only look like they took Vicodin.

  • nflfoghorn

Slightly OT: I see where the NFL’s trying to curb all the marijuana use by draftees. Good luck with that one. I’d never use it but if it were up to me I’d tax it and tell users to stay home.

  • sacredh

Speaking of overweight cows…the MIL has more prescriptions than Elvis and took one too many pain pills the other night. She literally melted out of the chair and slid onto the floor. My wife told me to help her so I threw a blanket over her and went to bed.

  • nflfoghorn

Wow. I think I’ll do that to MY wife before she slides off the couch ;) G’NITE!

  • sacredh

Yeah. it’s late for me too. I have to get up at 9 and pick up a new mirror for the game room. Goodnight.

  • apollyon07

interesting, nflfoghorn. I’ll watch to see how that turns out. I’m happy to see that they are moving in the right direction for OT rules.
    .
WOW sacredh, 12 things? I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but I wanna party with YOU. Or you can come party with me in Austin!
    .
And thanks for posting what your friend in FL said, it’s always good to get some local perspective. I think a lot of it will depend on how Rubio presents himself to voters after he wins the primary, particularly with whether or not he tries to move to the center.
    .
Well the letter they sent me told me about some program they are running for “Non-violent, misdemeanor, first time 17-21 year old offenders”. It says that the program gets you a deferred charge instead of a conviction. Then at the bottom it had a list of requirements, most of them basic, except one of them said “A written admission of wrongdoing”. Then below that list it said “meeting all the listed requirements does not guarantee admittance to this program”. So basically they could/will take an admission of guilt from you, tell you they are not taking you in the program…and then they would still have a confession to use against you. Honestly I thought they would’ve been a bit more clever.
    .
Needless to say I’m not having anything to do with that, especially since a deferred charged is the worst that I am expecting will happen (I’m hoping for a dismissal). I asked my lawyer just to be sure and his reply was the equivalent of “f that sh!t”. I love it when the government tries to outsmart me.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

nfl, I actually hope it starts a trend, if it hasn’t already. The whole idea of marijuana == BAD!! –> War on Drugs is a waste, anyway. Maybe the NFL will say, “Well, all them kids is using the dope, and there’s nary much we kin do ’bout it, so we might well legalize it,” spurring legislators to extract their heads from their butts and make it legal.
    .
Can’t wait until I can light a doobie and not worry about the cops confiscating everything I own. Ah, for 1982, again…

  • ricardo4max

You left wing anti_Americans would like nothing better than the phony Obama’s @ss kissing Charlie “I’m not really a conservative” Crist gaining the nomination.

  • ricardo4max

    Correction: First radical Marxist President!

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    Retardomax,

Do you have the slightest idea what health care reform is?

Are you aware that you now will get an insurance card handed to you by your employer if you are not self employed?

Are you aware that this is a bill exactly like Republican Bob Dole had proposed for Republicans eighteen years ago?

I mean, just because your buddies in Florida do not know what this bill was about does not mean that you should be as ignorant as your least intelligent friends.

I was sure that I heard a Cuban rage in your text.
Now you explain that you are from the most Cuban-American state in the US.

You need to get away from this influence since the facts will show you that this is no more “communist” than when employers or the self employed in many professions must buy worker compensation insurance.

When I see a confused conservative come online once, I feel bad for him.

You just won’t believe anything anybody explains to you no matter what.

You think paying taxes for your disabled neighbor to eat or your working poor neighbor to get to a doctor’s office is the same as Fidel Castro.

Castro took all private businesses, put opposition leaders in jail, took over the media, got rid of elections, had him and his friends pick out the price and quantity of every good and service Cubans were allowed to purchase.

You have something wrong with you.
    Eres enfermo en la cabeza.
    (You’re insane).

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

BTW: Worker’s compensation began for the first time in 1855.

So, it predates the end of slavery.

How old of an “American tradition” do you want?

It predates the first communist government in Russia in 1917 by sixty two years!

Using the government to require employers to take care of employees isn’t something communists taught Americans. It is what Americans and Western Europeans taught Communists.

The Communist Party, also, believed in civil rights.

Does that mean, since, separately, complete non-Communists like Martin Luther King Jr., also believed in civil rights that all of us are Communist for making sure that no state will prevent you from voting?

If not, then why the fk would you think that if both very anti-communist people and communists think going to a doctor is a good idea for poor people as well as rich people that we are heading for communism?

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Retardomax: the most recent mental patient online.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    Retardomax:
You need to start, also, calling yourself a communist if you want to follow right wing thought:
    http://usm.edu/crdp/html/cd/communism.htm#audio

If you think taking care of sick people means communism, then, I guess in the 1950s and 1960s when they said letting blacks and Latinos vote and live anyplace they can afford to live is, also, communist, too.

    Read and learn.

Big business has been using the word “communist” to deny workers union representation, health care, a minimum wage, social security and everything Americans have ever enjoyed.

Now big business has you bamboozled, too.

By the way, look up Richard Nixon. His health care proposals were far more interventionist than this.

Look up Bob Dole, Republican Candidate for President in 1996 and you will see that Obama, basically, copied and pasted Bob Dole’s plan and made it even more conservative.

So, you and Bob Dole can call yourselves Communists and hail your communist party.

I will enjoy a country with good health care.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Here’s a song for you when “Communists” were giving blacks and Latinos protection for the right to go out and vote.

Progressives, if you know this song it is funny.
