It’s Not Easy Being Stupak

Oh, how quickly they turn. A short while ago, Bart Stupak was in the midst of delivering an impassioned argument against the Republican motion to recommit the health reform bill when a Republican across the aisle hollered “Babykiller!” at him. That has to be a first for Stupak. But it may not be the last, as his last-minute decision to back health reform despite not getting his way on language in the bill has angered his once-allies more than if he’d made the switch months ago.

To wit: the Susan B. Anthony List, which works to elect pro-life women, had planned on honoring Stupak at its Campaign for Life Gala this Wednesday, announced a few hours ago that it was stripping Stupak of its “Defender of Life” award. “By accepting this deal from the most pro-abortion President in American history, Stupak has not only failed to stand strong for unborn children, but also for his constituents and pro-life voters across the country,” said president Marjorie Dannenfelser.

    The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

    More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Wait — Susan B. Anthony was anti-abortion?

  • deconstructiva

    Thanks, Amy. Are you there at the House? Do you think he will get primaried heavily for his behaviors? Either by progressives po’ed for trying to stall this or by NOW-former allies po’ed for last-second yes vote?
    (btw, text in your post got really teeny-tiny and is hard to read)

    Why don’t those guys work to reduce pre-marital sex? Oh, that would make too much sense.

  • nflfoghorn

    Ideas from the GOP: tort-reform, interstate insurance transfers, death panels, “baby-killer” and “you LIE!” Zero of them worthwhile.

  • deconstructiva

    …or extra-marital. Oh wait, that’s the Senate’s problem (and South Carolinian and ex-NY governors too, but I digress).

    He should get in line right behind all the Dems who were called n****r, f****t, and wet***k this weekend.
    _
    This was never really about health care, it was about reflexively hating “the other”.

  • nonagendaeyes

    Shouldn’t they be yelling “baby killer” at Obama? I mean he’s the most pro-abortion president in history after all.

    I can’t tell if swamp reporters are in the media room listen to speeches. It’s hard to tell people from the back of their heads. I’m not sure if KT’s still awake since she’s not a morning person, but I hope she blogs about John Dingell and his father’s pursuit of HCR again. It would be great if she gets an interview for his thoughts here. (I also hope she travels to Hogwarts to kick the IT system monkeys in the ass – literally – for login problems).

    Hi Amy,

    You should be aware that Stupak is not the most talk after issues in the Catholic world last week. Neither is abortion. Can you try goggling these words to be more relevant Vatican , Pope , Cardinal Ratzinger , Germany, Pope Ireland letter , Priest child abuse ?

    Sorry, wasn’t trying to respond to a comment when I posted.

    FWIW, I doubt these zealots care what Susan B. Anthony believed (not that I know).
    The spokesperson for the Susan B. Anthony Foundation was the one I mentioned a couple days ago that flat out lied in a WaPo chat and don’t even know that Roe v. Wade was a court case and not a “bill”. Comment 5 here explains why they are liars that shouldn’t be quoted unless the person quoting them points out how dishonest they are:

    …remove “not” from “since she’s not a morning person” since KT definitely IS one, props to her. I’m not the morning person and spent most of the day volunteering at the cat shelter. Feeding and playing with 30 attention-hungry cats all day is highly rewarding …and exhausting. I’ll be doing more of that this week too.

    The Republicans and their drones, the tea baggers, are such role models of decorum and professionalism. I particularly like someone spitting on Lewis (one of my heroes).
    //
    Nice touch was 4 Repubs on a Congressional balcony, holding a sign and enticing the crowd. This is after the racial and homosexual insults.
    //
    There excuse is always that the nasty responses of the tea baggers is a minority. That it can’t be helped. There are just so many angry people. When they speak to these unruly “adults” do they ever ask them to consider their behavior? No. They just encourage the bullying and ignorance. After all their leaders are Beck and LImbaugh.

    Where has the meme originated that Obama is the most pro abortion President ever? What is the basis of this judgement? You mean because he hasn’t flip flopped like Bush Sr, Romney, Scott Brown?

  • apr2563

    de: Maybe you can teach Reid how to herd cats.

  • apr2563

    Thanks. I don’t think the piety coming from the bishops is much respected.
    Now the nuns…GO NUNS.
    //
    I don’t envy the hate mail, calls and threats Stupak will be getting from the Christianists.

  • nflfoghorn

    BO tells young women all the time (including his own) to go have sex and get rid of the byproduct. I’m sure that’s what you meant by “pro-abortion” right?

  • the committee

    Perhaps Marjorie Dannenfelser should have a nice warm cup of ABORTION this morning, courtesy of yours truly, the most pro-abortion commenter in the history of Swampland.

  • pierogielunaire

    Bart who?

  • Jim, Foolish Literalist

    The idiot has only himself to blame. Nothing in this bill overturned the Hyde amendment. He wanted to make a pointless fight about abortion, and it blew up in his face. I hope he gets indicted for his shady arrangements with The Family.

    It’s Not Easy Being Stupak

    Thank God. If it was easy then more idiots would do it.

  • msrebel

    Dan Benishek is running against Stupak. Good luck Dan!
