The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Thanks, Jay. I’ll comment while still logged in (tech. bugs are going on)….
It’s interesting that many draw analogies to Pelosi’s parenthood experience (Van Hollen, etc.) but I wonder if they’ve figured out the obvious parallel: that House Reps are too much like kids. I’ve no doubt that YOU get it, but do they? Do you know if Stupak will get a serious primary run from progressive D’s?

  • deconstructiva

Also, props on your “Call” thingy today. It’s a good question to ask Pelosi about gaining HCR and lose the House or losing HCR and keep the House. Actually, have you asked her this (or will)? My hunch is the D’s will risk more by losing HCR …with a caveat, which is how upcoming issues get resolved / not. Success with finance reform and jobs may erase many bad HCR memories. Alas, Congress can’t do much more with jobs directly but addressing infrastructure, job training, R+D, etc. will help. (Barbara Kiviat wrote about these – http://curiouscapitalist.blogs.time.com/2010/03/17/congress-passes-a-jobs-bill-good-for-it/ ) Besides, as I’ve said often, watching R’s defend / even filibuster for Wall Street will be highly amusing. Thanks for your thoughts, Jay.

I have always had great admiration for the speaker. Yes, I will write my reason here even though some might not think it awesome, and so many mere pay lip service to it because they think it is the politically correct thing to say.

Well, here goes; Pelosi took time off to raise her family FULLY and then went back to work. No big deal for some–but for a woman who is obviously ambitious (hence becoming “Speaker” etc. :) ) she simply prioritized in an efficient way and is still living as she probably planned, career wise.

This article by JNS describes a woman who is politically adroit despite some media representations to the contrary. I like Speaker Pelosi.

When I think of strong women, for some reason, I did not always think of Pelosi but this story has made her seem strong, focused and an effective consistent advocate for the President.

    Enjoyed this piece.

It started yesterday afternoon for me. I changed my WordPress password (messed it up, so had to change it again.) Was able to log in once, then this morning it wouldn’t log me into Swampland even with the new password. After a lot of tries, I got in and am still in so far, but seems to be a problem and I guess they are working on it.

“Nancy Pelosi’s full time job was rearing her five children. She calls it invaluable training for her current job as the first woman Speaker of the House, in which managing her 253-member caucus can be a daily challenge.”

    .
Nothing like raising children to gain knowledge about the nature of people.
    .
    I like this woman.

it sems that the Dems are serious No special vote for Stupik, and no Self executing vote, taking away one more GOP talking poinmt. They are going to vote directly for the Senate Bill.

She is the queen of deviousness and one of the primary reasons congress is at an ALL TIME low in public perception. Only 16% of Americans, think congress is doing the job it was elected to do. It ALL starts with the leadership, so take your bows, Nancy and give us a big “oink”. Your years of feeding at the public trough, permeate the air with a nauseating stench!

  • kevin

First of all, no, it’s not an all-time low for Gallup’s polling on congressional approval. That happened back in 2008.
    .
    http://www.gallup.com/poll/108856/congressional-approval-hits-recordlow-14.aspx
    .
Second, if you look at polls that sort out the public’s opinion of congressional Democrats vs. congressional Republicans, it’s the opposition party that consistently polls lower. It’s almost like the public doesn’t like the Party of No.
    .
Here’s the Polling Report summaries of the Pew Research Polls asking for opinions of the two parties.

    .
Your years of feeding at the public trough, permeate the air with a nauseating stench!
    .
Classy. Why don’t you go a little further, join your Tea Party buddies and just start calling Democrats names like “n-gger” and “f-ggot”?
    .
    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/03/tea-partiers-call-lewis-nr-frank-ft-at-capitol-hill-protest.php

  • earljr1

Defending the indefensible, Kevin? Has the tea party got you worried? Democrats set the table for this wave of public distrust and will soon reap the benefits for consistently lying to the American people. Change we can believe in?? What an absolute joke!

  • kevin

No, the tea party doesn’t have me worried at all.
    .
It’s made up of (a) mouthbreathing morons, who Bruce Bartlett (link) and David Frum (link) noted, are upset about taxes because they know nothing about them and (b) gun-toting psychopaths who are going to get someone killed sooner or later.
    .
According to the latest poll (link), more Americans have an unfavorable view of the Tea Party people than have a favorable view of them, and when HCR passes tomorrow — and believe me, it will pass — their insanity is going to go off the charts and drive public opinion about them even lower, if that’s possible.
    .
In terms of electoral politics, the Tea Baggers are only going to serve as a third party wedge that’ll help get folks like Harry Reid re-elected (link), and further drive wedges between them and the last remaining sane conservatives in the party.
    .
So, no, I’m not scared at all. And the fact that morons like you have to keep showing up here saying liberals are scared of you, and that we’ll “rue the day” or whatever only shows that you are utterly full of it.
    .
But speaking of “defending the indefensible,” I notice you didn’t say anything about the racist, homophobic, violence-inciting comments of the Tea Party people in D.C. today. Very telling.

decon: To further your point, I find it interesting that Pelosi and the house leadership would sign off on allowing individual members to vote “no” once they have the required 216. Is voting data available to back this up?
