The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Thank you Michael, why are they so late with this?

ZERO – The number of Republicans who’ll vote for it, largely because IT WASN’T THEIR IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE! ;)

Which is funny considering that many commenters on this site have pointed out that the current bill has a lot of similarities to previous bills/proposals put forth by Republicans.

However, I have often wondered if progressives would be more vocal in expressing their dissappointment with this bill if it had been primarily a Republican effort. I think the answer is yes, as they might instinctively be more wary of anything that is pushed by the right. They might also see it as their job to counter-balance right wing proposals (and since this bill is being put forth by Dems maybe some progressives don’t see a need to counter-balance as much).

All this makes me think that a large part of the anger from the right towards this bill really is simply because it is seen as a leftist proposal. It’s not about what’s good or bad policy but more about perception of whose policy it is. It occurs to me that the only thing necessary to get something done in a bipartisan manner is to convince the other side that it was all their idea in the first place.

Also, someone please tell me how to make paragraphs (other than putting little periods in between, if there is another way).

You can watch what may be Obama’s final big speech on health care reform here:

crdvis16 I would like to know the paragraph secret also.
Also, once you sign up for an RSS update is there anyway to remove yourself. I am really tired of getting updates on the Beck/Jesus thread from the other day.

crdvis16, unfortunately in the Reply to mode it is not possible to make paragraph breaks apart from putting a character in.
    .
After much fussing when they changed platforms, we realized that this is a feature of the software they use and nothing can be done. It doesn’t have to be a period – you can use any character that strikes your fancy. To make matters worse, in the regular comment mode, a symbol isn’t required, so sometimes I forget what mode I’m in.

lcky9, please go read definitions of socialism. The U.S. government is not proposing to own, manage, and control all means of production in the U.S. And they certainly aren’t doing it with the current health care reform bill.
    .
Government regulation is not the same thing as government control.
    .
I can understand distaste for D.C. government, regardless of party. I really can. But using hyperbole like “Democrats” = “Socialists” is both intellectually dishonest and corrosive.
