Obama’s Pollster Makes His Case

My story in the next newsstand issue of TIME–subscribe here–is about Obama’s pollster, Joel Benenson, who bet change would beat experience in 2008, and now believes that health care reform is a 2010 win for Democrats. Read it here.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Hahahahahahaahahhaha.. More like a blood bath in November..

  • Paul-no not that one

Benenson’s likely right on the politics.
    .
The republican wigout as this nears the end is about more than constituent (read: healthcare/insurance industry) service.

  • Ivy_B

one of the best in the business, Hillary Clinton’s pollster Mark Penn,

I was a Hillary supporter until the end and I never thought that! In fact, I think he was one reason she lost.

  • Paul-no not that one

Mark Penn, and to be fair the Clintons, spent a lot of time selling Penn’s ability to the media. They are obligated to stipulate Penn’s skills.
    .
Whether or not those skills exist.
    .
    “Caucuses count? Who knew?”

  • freeinpa

“now believes that health care reform is a 2010 win for Democrats.”

Problem is the bill if it passes is not “reform” and the voters won’t forget or be fooled by the OBAMA BS machine the second time.

  • grape_crush

I was thinking the same along the same lines; nothing brings out the wingnuts like an election they know they are going to lose or policy that the bulk of the public will end up liking.

  • Ivy_B

Paul, too right. You brought back a round of head shaking and eye-rolling as I recalled those days.

  • 3xfire3

    Michael,
Have you ever written an article that did not support President Obama and the Democratic Party?
Your Bias is showing. Is that the appropriate job of a professional reporter?

  • newfreedomblog

“My story in the next newsstand issue of TIME–subscribe here (would this be, before healthcare takes affect and no one will be able to afford TIME Magazine????)–is about Obama’s pollster, Joel Benenson, who bet change would beat experience in 2008, and now believes that health care reform is a 2010 win for Democrats. Read it here. (Would that be assuming that healthcare cost will not RISE BY 40% AFTER THIS BILL TAKES EFFECT????)

    .
Thanks for the humorous post today Michael. We truly appreciate it!!

  • charlieromeobravo

yeah yeah yeah, socialism, tax and spend, Chicago politics, ram it down our throats, etc…

  • square1

How many votes did Hillary lose because Penn has Burson-Marsteller attached to his name? Not an excuse, since Hillary picked the guy, she has to take the blame for his failings.

Just one more reason to believe that we would be in the same (sold-out) place right now if she had won.

  • newfreedomblog

Oh I almsot forgot, rumor also has it that the TOOTH FAIRY was found, and will now be part of the “Democrat Healthcare Reform Bill”, otherwise known as “Teddy’s Bill”, as was described by Sen Robbie Byrd.
    .

“In his honor and as a tribute to his commitment to his ideals, let us stop the shouting and name calling and have a civilized debate on health care reform which I hope, when legislation has been signed into law, will bear his name for his commitment to insuring the health of every American.”
    .
“God bless his wife Vicki, his family, and the institution that he served so ably, which will never be the same without his voice of eloquence and reason. And God bless you Ted. I love you and will miss you terribly.”
    .
“In my autobiography I wrote that during a visit to West Virginia in 1968 to help dedicate the “Robert F. Kennedy Youth Center” in Morgantown, “Senator Kennedy’s voice quivered with emotion as he talked of his late brothers and their love for West Virginia. ‘These hills, these people, and this state have had a very special meaning for my family. Our lives have been tightly intertwined with yours.”

    .
Gee, doesn’t that make you feel special???
    .
I may be jumping the gun here a little, but in horor of “Teddy’s Bill”, I just want to take this opportunity to thank the Democrats on Capital Hill for passing what shall be the largest entitlement in world history. That you have condemned my children, my grandchildren and their children to a life of unequaled poverty due to the tremendous increase in taxes.
    .
I also want to thank the Democrats in Washington for passing this bill in memory of Ted Kennedy, and to all the Seniors who were counting on Medicare to meet your healthcare needs but no longer will be able to rely on it due to the massive cuts and rationing this bill creates, just DIE QUICKLY as Representative Grayson from Florida wishes you to do. You can sacrifice one more time for your country by dying quickly. Remember, life is all about quality, not quantity of years. Ask Robert Byrd himself.

  • Ivy_B

Michael, I agree this is a nifty site. Noted if from your tweet in the box above. They are updating, so it should keep being interesting.

I love the fever pitch wing-nuttery we’re seeing as the bill gets closer and closer to becoming law. At this point all the golden oldies the opposition have been using (death panels, care rationing, massive debt increase, massive tax increase, massive insurance cost increases, it’s a gateway law to socialism, etc…) have been shot down and hold no credibility for he people that have actually been paying attention to the debate. Wipe the froth from the corner of your mouth and come up with some new reasons why this bill shouldn’t be passed. Try some honest arguments if you can find that. That would be a novel approach after a year of trying to use fear mongering and misinformation to kill it.

  • freeinpa

I love the way truth makes the left apoplectic. It is hell not having uncontested voices doesn’t it?

  • freeinpa

“That would be a novel approach after a year of trying to use fear mongering and misinformation to kill it.”

I doubt Obama will change his style now

newfreedomblog: Aw shut up, Rusty. You know you have zero credibility when you’re resorting to the online equivalent of sock puppetry to make it look like rational people agree with you.

Charlie: You’ve got to keep in mind that, considering how badly this bill’s been demonized, if it passes, the current GOP are going to look like they let it happen, and their voters aren’t nearly as open minded or forgiving as the left’s (It still impresses me that the progressives have put so much aside for the sake of this bill).

Essentially, if what’s long been the Holy Grail of modern progressivism gets passed? Republican credibility is absolutely, positively shot, not only with moderates (who’ll see they were bluffing as the benefits come into focus), but with the Tea Party base they’ve been trying so hard to court, who will replace them with someone more “capable” in a heartbeat. For them, failure is not an option – but right now, it’s looking to be inevitable.

Like the old saying goes; “When there’s something scary at the front, put something scarier in the back”.

Freep: May very well be talking to another rusty sock puppet here, but give it up with the conservative memes, they’ll gain no traction with anyone above room temperature I.Q.

Bookmark all the posts about how passing healthcare for all Americans, will hurt Democrats in the fall.

Nonsense. Majorities know well that the health system is badly broken, tens of millions are 1 illness away from financial ruin, and the GOP has chosen the interests of insurers over actual relief for working Americans. Those are all facts. Not hard to run on.

After Media Inc. had HCR killed by one fluke election in MA, this bill came back because Progressives made it clear to sitting Dems that failure was not an option.

Dems were facing an exodus of the base in the fall, if they caved on this direly needed social progress. That is exactly how Gingrich took over the House in 1994. 38% turnout that year, with angry Progressives saying home after Dems caved into insurance industry scare tactics in Clinton’s reform bill.

I guess eliminating “pre-existing conditions” is not reform in your opinion. Or is that a lie also. Just continue to close your eyes to the facts cover your ears and keep on yelling your Fox news talking points.

  • northpoleresident

Do you really believe anyone actually reads your rants? Trust me 90% of us see your name and just move on to the next comment.

    Dear ‘north-dimwit’ and ‘shia-shurashia’
    .
You see in life there are those who are simply stools for the far left extremists, and then there are a few on the left who do have open minds.
    .
I know you both are lost causes, and I have no desire what-so-ever in changing your mind. Your minds are firmly in the camp of the progressives as evidenced by your own statements.
    .
This bill may pass, but this is not the end of the “struggle”. It is the beginning. I am confident there are millions upon millions more just like me who will come forth to defeat you in the end. That I can promise you.
    .
It is already evident by the 37 States which have legislation in process right now to make this bill un-constitutional. Two States, Virginia and Idaho have already passed legislation that prohibits the Federal Government to “mandate” this legislation on their citizens. As more and more people see what the Progressive Democrats in Congress aided and abetted by this freak show President do to pervert the Constitution, you shall see what a majority will do to those of you who attempt to destroy our country.

Dear Rusty “survival seeds” Blog, You are most welcome to keep on pi$$ing against the wind.. No wonder you call it a “struggle”
    .
PS: Just keep a seed can aside for your own use, In the unlikely event that you stare at defeat in the end and have to go underground.

    newfreedom,
Pay no attention to the Ignorants that call names but add nothing of intelligence to any discussion.
You are right. They are hopeless and but a small minority of our citizens. They really should move to some country that would appreciate their closed minds. I would suggest either Venezuela or Cuba the liberal’s paradises. They would fit in so well in these Socialist Dictatorships. [ Oh I meant Democracies ].

If I were you Creepinpa, lcky,k92, rusty, and friends, I wouldn’t be countin’ them thar’ chickens any too soon! That pollster fellar makes some good points! Let’s get the Republicans on the record on the details between now and November. We’ll see!

“Pay no attention to the Ignorants that call names but add nothing of intelligence to any discussion” – 3xfire3
    .
3xfire3, Thats very good advice. But I won’t call it sound advice, because Rusty would end up self-ignorant, because:
    .
    A. Nobody called him names other than the ones he has used to refer to himself (Rusty).
    .
    B. He started his comments with ” Dear ‘north-dimwit’ and ’shia-shurashia’ ” .. LOL. :D
