From our White House Photo Blog.:

P.S.: This totally confirms what I thought at the time. That dress added lbs. I liked the swearing-in outfit much better.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Thank God I’ll never have to wear THAT again!

KT, I’m not a fashion designer but why are there so many poofy formal dresses / wedding dress / etc. out there when they’re NOT flattering? And if they’re not split up to the thigh on one side, how do you go to the bathroom while wearing them? (I’m serious; how the hell is this possible? Do bridesmaids / courtiers literally hold it up while you’re in the stall?)

According to my wife, with a lot of help from the bridesmaids.

Absolutely agree with KT about the dress adding lbs! I kept looking at pix of her at the inaug balls and thought she’s not that heavy – must be the dress. Why on earth pick that one. The swearing-in outfit was stunning – if only I were taller, I would mortgage the house and try to find some place to wear it!

…do you have knockoff shops (ala Forever 21-ish) or local boutiques that have sim. copies? Or even better, can you (or a friend) make the dress yourself? I don’t create clothes but my mom does now and then. It’s definitely an art form. I watched a youtube video yesterday of Amy Sullivan in an interview. She was wearing a knit yarn dress that my mom could crochet, though it would take a long time to do. Did Amy crochet that dress herself?

Well, *that* wasn’t what I expected.

As Michelle smiles, waves, and proudly donates her gown to the Rudy Giuliani American Collection of Women’s Fashions, she’s really thinking: “Arrrrrgh, seven more years of this poofy dress / painful shoes / healthy eating crap. I hate yams. I can’t wait to get back to jeans and sweats with some potato chips and ice cream. Even if that means Barack goes back to smoking.”

    KT–
It’s quite interesting that during the evening of the inauguration and the next morning you could hardly find a person who would publically proclaim that the dress was unfllattering. For those of us who did not like it, we had to wait till she appeared at the first State Dinner for the Indian Prime Minister wearing that gorgeous Naeem Khan gown to prove our point:
