The Daily Dodd

It turns out that Chris Dodd isn’t really in favor of the Volcker Rule, prohibiting commercial bank from proprietary trading–that is, making casino bets on the market. This aligns with what was reported two days ago, but disputed by Dodd’s staff yesterday. I’m confused.

Mr. President, Should What Happens In Vegas Stay There?

During the 2008 campaign, Michael Weisskopf and I wrote a story that argued that if you wanted to know how John McCain and Barack Obama would govern, you need only look at how they gambled. McCain, a craps player, loved thrill, risk, long shots and yawping tables. Obama, a poker player, was cautious, cagey, calculating, [...]

Demand Question Time

Pop quiz: Quickly name a cause that conservative organizer Grover Norquist, liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas, liberal media predator L. Brent Bozell III, Nation Editor Katrina vanden Heuval, former Swamplander Ana Marie Cox, and John McCain/George W. Bush Adviser Mark McKinnon can all sign on to? Nope. It’s not tax breaks for TV punditry, or government [...]

So is Health Care Reform Dead or Just in a Democratically Induced Coma?

Despite Scott Brown’s victory, there’s still a lot of debate over the fate of health care reform around Washington and in living rooms across America. (There’s even some debate here at Swampland.) Every day we try to read the signs and report back how things are looking. Should supporters feel hopeful? Are Democrats just plotting [...]

Illinois Voters Go to the Polls

Illinois today kicks off what will be a long and fascinating primary season. Voters braved snow flurries to head to the polls this morning as balloting began for a number of local and statewide races, including contests for the U.S. Senate and governor’s mansion. The names Obama and Blagojevich may not be on the ticket [...]

Note to Harold Ford: Get Your Story Straight

Yikes. Stephen Colbert is getting credit for shredding Harold Ford on his show last night–and he was skillful at trying to pin down the would-be New York Senate candidate. But most of Ford’s wounds were self-inflicted. (Video after the jump.) Among those Ford managed to insult in under six minutes:

White House: Bush Administration To Blame For Ex-Guantanamo Bay Recidivists

From a letter, acquired by ABC News, from John Brennan, White House Homeland Security adviser, to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House: We believe that significant improvements to the detainee review process have contributed to significant improvements in the results. According to the most recent report to Congress pursuant to section 319 of the Supplemental [...]

Quote of the Day

“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens….Allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.” [...]

Mainstream America?

I was on Bill O’Reilly’s program last night, which was sort of hilarious. The most insufferable part of it was the Fox conceit–really insufferable, after the recent poll that scored Fox as the most trusted news source–that their viewers represent “the folks.” Yes, they undoubtedly represent some of the (Republican) folks. And Daily Kos–via Ben [...]

CORRECTION: Dodd on Regulatory Reform

It looks like dealReporter, the publication Michael Scherer and I cited yesterday on financial regulatory reform, got quite a bit wrong. Scherer reports below that Republican Senator Richard Shelby says he’s undecided on the so-called  Volcker Rule to limit casino-gambling by banks. And Senator Chris Dodd was entirely misrepresented by dealReporter, Scherer and me: He [...]
