Lunch Break

The summit just broke for lunch. They are running way over time and Demcorats are getting more of it, partly because President Obama is talking a lot in response to statements by Republican lawmakers. Make no mistake about it. This is Obama’s meeting. He’s running it – calling on lawmakers one by one and talking whenever he wants.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Michael Steele is just the comedy gift that keeps on giving. From this morning’s appearance on MSNBC:
    .

STEELE: This whole dog and pony show that we’re about to witness today is something that should have taken place a year ago, when the administration first came in last February and laid out its agenda for health care. This is how you should have started it – bipartisan, public forum, CSPAN, your cameras rolling to capture this and to capture, most importantly, what the American people want. And right now, they want us to start over, and I think we should.
    .
TODD: Chairman Steele, in fairness to them, I mean, it was a year ago that they actually had a summit.
    .
    GUTHRIE: On March 5th.
    .
TODD: And it wasn’t just the legislative leaders. They brought in folks from the industry as well. And that one was televised.

Kate, huge kudos to you and KT for the frontline duty here. I appreciate it. Now the serious, dealbreaking question:
Lunch! What are you two having? Is it catered, brown bagged, or did lovely Amy fix something for you?

  • afguy

Me, I’m having a Mr. Pibb and a Chicken Pot Pie – microwaved.

Not to worry. I’m listening to the onine break analysis on CBS and it’s all Repub points and all good on the Repubs. They had a factchecker from the House Repubs – no one from a Dem side. Then Mark Knoller, much to my surprise pointed out how all the Repubs starting with Alexander knocked Obama on his heels with questions he wasn’t prepared for. Then Mike Allen and now Mark Thiessen pointing out it is a set up with a very partisan approach to jam a bill through in the face of a popular uprising. Most partisan President in decades.

Guess it’s like the head of ABC news I heard on NPR the other day discussing all the layoffs there, saying that they were taking a new tack because of the liberal bent of all the media.

Let me get this straight. Steele calls it a dog and pony show and THEN says they should have had the dog and pony show last year?
    .
He should have stuck to groveling at Limbaugh’s throne. It looked more dignified.

afguy, I don’t know if you and I agree on politics but, man, I love pot pies.

Obama should bring his teleprompter with him when he returns from lunch. Not that he won’t continue to embarrass the entire United States with his utter incompetence on the issue at hand, but we probably won’t have to endure all of the uuuuuuummms, uuuuuuuuuuuhs, aaaaaaaaaahs, ….

  • sacredh

I skipped breakfast and lunch. We’re going out grocery shopping shortly and take-out chinese is for dinner. For me anyway. I’ll eat in the library. Eating Coconut shrimp, egg rolls, roast pork lo mein and home made strawberry wine while the mrs does her Weight Watchers thing is something best done separately.

    vg,
    .
I have for a LONG time. What I’ve noticed, though, is that they don’t make them as good as they used to.
    .
Too much crust and veggies… not enough chicken.

  • northpoleresident

Obama didn’t need a telepromter when he b-smacked the republicans at the forum a month ago.
    .
Embarrasing is the level of inteligence our last president had or the empty hollow shell of a your hero Sarah Palin.
    .
It is funny that the party of Bush and Palin tries to attack the inteligence of Obama when Bush and Palin are incapable of demonstrating any level of critical thinking.

    .
Elk pot roast leftovers (sans the “elk” part) are what’s on the menu for tonight.

afguy: Your posts display so much class, I just assumed you would be eating the ones I enjoy.

    .
Not sure I’ve seen them in the stores here in West Ky. Are they a regional product?

  • shepherdwong

Probably. They’re not frozen so you find them in the fresh food cases. I know they’re sold in stores in the mid-Atlantic but haven’t seen them elsewhere.
    .
You can get them direct though:
