The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Kate, did the D’s and R’s enter together, in 2 groups, or file in individually? Was there theme music, such as “Star Wars” – Darth Vader’s G-minor theme for R’s, Princess Leia’s softer theme for D’s? I’m wishing for Obama to enter to the final fanfare / march in the Hall that Luke strolled to receive his gold figure skating medal.

I’ve heard we should talk about Marco Rubio’s $130 hair cut instead. Do you think he got a pedicure out of it? Extensions?

  • afguy

Did any of the R’s blink “tax cuts” or “death panels” in Morse code into the camera?

I wish Sarah were there; she’d wink those messages. Those chairs also didn’t sound too great when skirting the floor as people stand up (ala Family Guy).

    You betcha she would!

Any truth to the rumor that the extra cost was due to getting “Tea Party” shaved into his crown?

That the GOP has picked hard-core conservatives to attend this even shows they are not serious about cooperation and that this even will ultimately be a failure, which is exactly what the GOP needs.

Lamar Alexander is arguing that our country is too big to do big bills. Huh?? An argument for “not change”. His six points are all small, vague goals that mean basically more of the same. I am unimpressed with the GOP’s goal of failure here.

  • pafro

And his new point seems to be that the Republicans of the United States cannot deal with issues in a “comprehensive fashion” because they always end up teabagging them, like they did to immigration reform and cap and trade, so America should stop trying to do stuff and just “go die”.
Very odd stance for Lamer Alexander to admit that Republicans don’t believe in progress and don’t believe they have the ability to govern.

  • pafro

I heard that he got that treatment where they put teabags on your eyes to smooth out the wrinkles. Unfortunately such treatment appears to retard intelligence as well.

Here lie the remains of the Executive & Legislative Branches of the United States of America.

    Final “talking/visuals points” score:
    GOP-122
    Dems-121
Good of the Country – 0

This is what passes for liberal intelligent discourse!

Maybe the Dems will pass notes to Obama during study hall about putting goldfish in the Repubs water coolers

If anyone at this meeting cracks a joke about John McCain “suspending his campaign” because Bush and Obama told him to, I will send them a check for $100 immediately, I don’t care if it is the Boner that does it, I will still send him money.
I would really would like to see those veins bulge out in McCain’s neck and forehead this morning.

That is the exact point that liberals never understand. What may have no effect in CA is catastrophic to Idaho given the different states laws or incomes.

Take the income tax. If you live in NYC and make 100k “your rich” according to liberals. After Fed, state, local and assorted taxes you can afford a phone booth with a bathroom you share. Whereas earning 100k in WV could buy you an entire town.

Messing with 16% of GDP in one bill without a clue as to all the impacts is idiocy.

    Shorter Freeper:
The Republican “one size fits all” plan for getting rid of state insurance regulation and letting all insurance be sold across state lines would have negative consequences for peole who live in states with good and honest insurance regulators.
